"Free" additional content?

So a topic has been on my mind, specifically downloadable content.

In particular, I'm referring to the 3DS' SpotPass function which tends to give free content, but could be anything similar.

These things may range from extra equipment, characters, or maps.

With that in mind, do you feel that it's somewhat "cheating" to be given such content without working for it?

Or do you feel that since the creator had integrated it into the game anyway, its just another cog in the machine?

(DLCs come to mind, but majority of the time you pay for extra content you want)

An example from me would be Fire Emblem: Awakening, the extra weapons I received just didn't feel right, and would've

"lessened" the overall experience for me. I ended up not using them as a result.

What do you think?

It really does depend on the game, Say in smash 4 you get stuff from streetpass but you need to "work" for it, I'd just sell extra weapons if that's a thing in awakening or the new one. and pokemon's are just plain useful.

You get free stuff in Awakening but...

A- you have to have the right weapon skill level to use them

B- they have limited uses, less than a handful of missions and poof, they're gone.

C- for buying items from streetpass people, you have to come up with the gold. gotta grind/do smart things for that.

Smash 3ds, you just get to do the minigame with the other people's tops and you can get a good amount of coins from that, which is good because it's difficult to get lots of coins doing anything is smash 3ds in a short period of time.

Even in kid ikarus uprising, you could get op gems from people much further in the game than you, but you can't afford to turn them into a usable weapon early game.

I really don't see it the way you do, like street pass is almost like cheating.

If you can do it without using a loophole in the game, like duping, any tactic is fair game. If you can get something, get it. You don't have to use it anyway, so it's not an issue.

From what I've seen, there isn't really any game that gives you free stuff through streetpass that really breaks the game in any way.

I'll add some examples of streetpass stuff here.

The Monster Hunter games have "Guild Cards" which let you hire other hunters to do quests for you(these don't count as quest you've completed).While you can get these through streetpass, you can also get guild cards by exchanging them with people online, so this isn't too big a deal.

In LoZ: A Link Between Worlds, streetpass lets you fight shadows of the players you streetpassed. If you beat the shadow, you get rupees, simple as that(these shadow Links are difficult, so good luck trying to beat shadows of people who already 100%'d the game while you're still early in the game).
