unrelated, but how'd did you make that trainer banner?

Long story short? A metric-ton of layers. Also, thanks for your feedback Dallas! I'll git gud with the shading, it's still a bit of a mess. 🤔

Loooooong version, I made this with Krita, which is essentially Photoshop but free. 😄 It's not made for spriting, but with a couple tweaks it's pretty good!

(Like using a grid, creating pixel brushes, disabling anti-aliasing for the wand and enabling fast mode for the bucket, things like that.)

    • The pokémon & items I ripped from Reborn's graphic folder. Anything else, I got it from The Spriters Resource
    • Except the UI, which is ripped and edited from a PNG which traces back to the pokecharms site.
    • The glow effect is really just a gaussian blur.
    • The text is just the GBA-style font from dafont, I think?
    • Lastly the character is Decibel's design re-tweaked, with some concept art I posted on reddit.
  2. Just a small update, I finally got around playing with the sprite!

It's a bit more readable now, though I need to clean the art line... and redo the coat and hair... narrow down the palette... *sigh*

That medkit is MIA, I'm still not sure about that. 🤔 There's a lot missing, but I feel like the clothes are still off.

Tsareena's intended to be a Poison/Fairy line, inspiration was the concept of a cursed apple/evil queen motif such as seen in Snow White.

That's genius! Though when I think of the poison apple I think more of greens, blacks and purples. If the color scheme brighter and less of a pinkish hue, I'd be more inclined to think that it's an apple and not gore. (I don't mean to be gross, but the colors make me think more of flesh and marrow than fruit.) The design is beautiful, though.

Magnemite and Magneton were supposed to be barrels containing liquid, and Magnezone's unfinished design is a big barrel with sparkers to light its alcohol on fire... not sure how I want to proceed with it, though.

This is giving me some Wanyudo vibes. In Japan it's a spirit known as the "Firewheel" or "Soultaker", a malevolent creature believed to be the damned soul of a tyrannical lord who once drew his victims on the back of a chariot. He takes the form of a burning wheel with an horrendous face, terrifying townsfolks as he steals the souls of anyone close enough to bring them to hell with him.

If you simply want the barrel design to be clearer, I'd draw wood texture, or at least the resemblance of planks

If you search something like Silvally Arceus fake leak you might find where I got the design. Someone did some art of a more Arceus-like Silvally, and it made its way onto the image search as a fake leak image.

Ooh, I just went and looked it up. To me Silvally's mane and tail look like they're make of... energy? Light, like an halo? It's really hard to make in pixel art. You could go, as the bros do say, go apeshit on a redesign and make him really bulky, in a cerberus/chimera way, but why go through that? :thonk:  I doubt you'll want to change it, plus your design works and it's fine as it is.

  4. Tsareena's line is positively terrifying but it's good design, it definitively sticks in my mind. I love Silvally too, for some reason to me it looks like its fur is covered in frost. Magnemite makes me think of potato Glados it's hilarious. Can't way to see Primarina, good job on these sprites! 😄

  5. I'll be honest and tell you what my grandma once told me: you think too much, and it's going to make you miserable. And it's pissing me off, because I have the same tendency. I used to think like that.

Life's about adapting. It won't bend to ideals, or dreams. Blind optimism will crush you, but petty pessimism will drown you. Walk the middleground. Find the courage to take and actually go through the best options given to you, because it's always about making do with what you're given in order to keep a good conscience. People can't give you what they don't have. But you can carve your will, your choices in small gestures and pray to whatever god you probably don't worship to acquire the wisdom to know the difference and make peace with what you can't change.

It's no wonder you can't bridge others. You can't connect with people halfway, because you draw a clean "them" vs. "me" narrative. You isolate yourself. You, ironically, like so many others, discard the label of "human" when its convienient. It's not a road I'd like to walk.

  6. My favorites are hands off https://imgur.com/1JIgTX7 and https://imgur.com/WxvYbED and https://imgur.com/gnVTsDR.

I couldn't quite place why, but your style makes me think of Land of the Lustrous, somehow. I think it's because of the way you draw bodies lean and the characters' general melancholy appearance: to me there's always this focus on the faces and expressions, but when we see them in full-body image it's usually to showcase the fashion- right? I also like https://imgur.com/MSrJvFh where the focus shifts to the background. It's fun to play with colors! Good palette. Don't be scared to experiment more, blend and use other mediums, as long as you have fun.

As for the drawings in etherane's artstyle, it's a good way to get across and express feelings with visual imagery. Also I don't remember which one, but in one of your sketches there's a background full of spirals to fill the empty space, and I think it's a medium closeup of a boy(?)'s face. I remember thinking "Ooh, spooky." It's mostly used in (but not limited to) manga, using geometric patterns to evoke emotional response or direct the viewer's focus to a certain place.

@Promethe, thanks for your feedback! I can elaborate on the workflow for sure. Yes, showcase was more the mindset on this project for the characters and VFX.

    1) "SFX, how'd you make them?" - SineVFX Studio and Hovl Studio VFX Packs with many edits/combinations of their Unity effects. For example Hovl's Orb Pack 4 includes a Rasengan Shuriken particle effect. I combined that with a rasenshurken 3D high poly model + light glows + bloom + small wind cyclones. Emulating the anime!

    2) "Snappy Fight scenes, Good key poses, More In-betweens" - 100% agree with you! Secret limit here is animations are extracted from the Sun/Moon/Ultra games! Pacing of animations in-game fits the slower paced Attack-Wait-Animate-WatchVFX mold. Thank Nintendo for poses. I selected what I thought was more impactful. You can get the animations using SPICA. (see this post).

    3) "Redid Textures"VG Resource includes many of the models/textures. I updated/rebuilt many of the textures to get higher quality. Originals only reach 256x256 but the Sword/Shield versions go up to 512x512. The JoJo/All Might Machamps were the toughest to do, 1028px. If you mod the textures, they can fit any of the models from Sun/Moon/Sword/Shield and also Let's Go games.

    4) "Added Geometry" - Unity3D allows combing/editing geometry. Look at the Blaziken (Gold Armor) and Bisharp (Black Armor). The Armors is the actual geometry from the golden Magnamon and the BlackWarGreymon models from the Digimon games. I adjusted, resized and edited pieces of their armors to fit the Pokemon, then tested it with the animations on. It's fun.

Thanks! It's always fun to see how different artists tackle different challenges. The process is as fundamental as the rest, I'd say.

    Wow, thanks!
I know you posted this waaay long ago, sorry for the late reply, was just checking for news of the v13 and wasn't logged in this whole time, ops..
Anyway thanks for the complement, I like that artstyle because it's easy on the eyes for me and it's actually quite fast to do.

Pfft, I'm quite the late replier, no big deal. And yeah! Sometimes simple is best. If you ever feel like sharing others pieces, I'll be more than happy look at your gallery. ✌️

  9. Only one thing's bothering me, it's the pacing of the shots and general camera movement: it's like I'm watching the video at 0.75 speed. Fight scenes are supposed to be snappy, but I'm not sure if I'm looking at a showcase or an dynamic animation sequence. I guess what I'm saying boils down to "I'm whining because I wanted it to be more fast-paced".

The SFX are really good, how'd you make them? Same goes with the lighting to some extent. The models' key poses are fun, showy and easy to read, and it shows in the animation. Try to give some extra attention to your in-betweens, because it's especially hard to translate weight and momentum in 3D animation.

I'm guessing you took the base models from a site similar to vg-resources, then remodeled, added some geometry and redid the textures? If you're willing to explain your workflow, that be cool.

I wonder where to check my current relation points? I played two runs with over 200h each but I don't know where I could look them up 😄 And it's too long ago to remember all small details

Easiest way is to download SWM modular modpack ( https://www.rebornevo.com/forums/topic/24930-swm-modular-modpack-e1840/ ). Backup your saves when using mods, of course, but "SWM - PredictRelationshipValues" allows you to use Psychic out of battle to display your relationships points. Or you could also use RPG Maker if you got it.

Sorry it was a bit long, I went into progressively more detail as I went along. Anyway have fun!

I plan on having fun tinkering with team setups, that's for sure. That's really a comprehensive overview, thanks for taking some of your time: all those are neat things to know. I'm curious though, why Stunfisk?

And as someone who also played through Reborn with a Rainbow team using Rain and Sun, I'd like to give some suggestions if you don't mind.

So it's called a rainbow team? Noice. And thanks for the feedback, it's cool. (If I didn't want to know what other people think, I might as well not post.)

    Quote

I really like that team tho. Infernape is really good, and Mantine and Steelix are a great combo since they cover each other's weaknesses very well.

    [Happy newb noises]

For Magnezone I knew the setup wouldn't work, and I'm thinking of adding Torkoal like you said, I really like the lil guy. I kinda want to keep Magnezone though, he can really help in a pinch... Also I'm really liking Sonic boom thanks for that.

I could set up Wiggly to praise the sun really hard, but its not the most efficient. The reason why I added Wiggly was that, out of memory, I'm leaving myself open to psychic/fairy/dragon if Infernape or Mantine faints. Wiggly's supposed to be a backup support for that, but its not too crucial.

    29 minutes ago, Edo said:

For Infernape, since the Swords Dance TM doesn't exist yet, it would be interesting to use a special or mixed set, with Nasty Plot/Work Up and Fire Pledge (Fire Pledge gets boosted by 1.5x on Rainbow field, additionally to the sun boost, so it's Infernape's best Fire move when Rainbow field is active).  Would be nice if Vacuum Wave was possible to get for a special set

I did think Infernape was a good mixed attacker. Depending on the foe it might even deal mor damage. Goes to show that min-maxing isn't always the best. Thanks for another great suggestion. Should I keep Iron Fist? Don't think so, especially since Sun Wukong over there isn't necessarily to tanky.

Also U-Turn's and Sword Dance aren't available in-game? (My disappointment is immesurable and my day is ruined) Not gonna cheat for that, so I'll work with.

  13. This whole premise began because I wanted to build a quaint competitive team for a reborn playthrough. There's this saying in french, "Après la pluie, le beau temps" or "After the rain, [comes] nice weather", and I wanted to make a team around that. There's a lot to fix, I feel like EV repartission and some teammates could use some work for starters.

    Politoed

    Spoiler

    Politoed @ Damp Rock
    Ability: Drizzle
    EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe
    Bold Nature
    - Scald
    - Perish Song
    - Toxic
    - Protect

The most dreadful creature in existance. His name is Glenn for people who're curious.

    Mantine

    Spoiler

    Mantine @ Leftovers
    Ability: Swift Swim
    EVs: 64 HP / 252 Spa / 192 Spe
    Modest/Calm Nature
    - Hydropump
    - Hurricane
    - Ice Beam
    - Tailwind

One of the MVPs, way too biased on that one. Named him Waver because I'm watching too much FATE lately.

    Magnezone

    Spoiler

    Magnezone @ Quickclaw
    Ability: Sturdy
    EVs: 56 HP / 252 Spa / 200 Spe
    Timid Nature
    - Sunny Day
    - Thunder
    - Volt Switch
    - Zap Cannon

"Aha, thunder go Bippity boppity BOO-M."

    Steelix

    Steelix @ Steelixite
    Ability: Sturdy
    EVs: 212 HP / 252 Atk / 44 Spd
    Adamant Nature
    - Stealth Rock
    - Earthquake
    - Steel Roller
    - Rock Slide

Just meant to be his annoying chonky self. Steel Roller effectively ends the weather cycle and hurts like a truck.

    Infernape

    Spoiler

    Infernape @ Black Belt
    Ability: Iron Fist
    EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
    Naive/Jolly Nature
    - Fire Punch
    - U-Turn
    - Mach Punch
    - Sword Dance

Gets a boost from Mags' Sunny Day. Usually sent first or last. Trying to play with his moveset, it works but its a bit bland.

    Wigglypuff

    Spoiler

    Wigglypuff @ Life Orb
    Ability: Competitive
    EVs: 252 HP / 252 Spa / 4 Spe
    Modest Nature
    - Dazzling Gleam
    - Hyper Beam
    - Heal Bell
    - Copycat

The empty slot, so to speak. Not the best, but he covers a lot of weak points. Must susceptible to change.

  14. Just another tidbit for people still reading, if you want a good free software that's very similar to photoshop, I personally use KRITA. ( https://krita.org/fr/ )

Just a warning, it's not the best for sprite art, like PiskelApp or heck even paint.net, but all of those are good.

It really just comes down to working with a tool that you feel comfortable with both in terms of learning curve and features.

  15. I'm thinking a lot of things right now:

    Spoiler

    1. Trans Fern is the headcanon I didn't know I had and I thank you for it

    2. Your avatar is staring at me like it wants a very steamy tête-à-tête in an alleyway behind McDonalds and I don't like it

    3. Honestly fuck Bennet and his equally asinine hair , that's 100% valid

    4. Please come back one day, that's quality content right there

I really love Dolsidian, the idea of an underground whale is so cool. The colors go really well together and the overall design is nice to look at.

I got an idea if you'd like: colored patterns on the glass armor. 😁

    Spoiler

    1. Snowflake obsidian 2. Glass%2BButtes%2BDouble%2BFlow%2Bobsidian.png

    1. Snowflake Obsidian

    2. Patterns on impure obsidian

Iron and other contaminants can give obsidian a yellow to red color. Or when clustered crystals form into the dark glass, it makes patterns that looks like snow, or bubbles.

ps: if you couldnt tell, mightyena is also winter, but i dont know if the doggo will have an easy time with the snow :C he try

Leafeon must have been hell to shade, it's really pretty. Torterra is good; it could have used a duller brown for the legs along with more "weight" or "puffiness" to make the snow look a lil' less flat. Mightyena's adorable, they really look like a gnarly husky. 😁

Additionally, it would be fun to join Team Meteor with the mission of infiltrating and destroying from within-but to have to do so without getting caught or noticed.

Whether from an unnerving/tragic position of disempowerment (like Evi Crystal said) or in tenseful scenario of undercover espionnage, I feel like working under Meteor would have been a huge opportunity to see its inner workings and explore the repercussions of its hierachy and morality on the characters.

Imagine being forced to work under Lin, watching you like an hawk knowing full well you're not a grunt after the PULSE Abra fight, and reaching a fickle mutual understanding with Sirius as not to die lol.Or, given his respect for MC's strength, how about being given an offer to join by Solaris, sprinkled in with a good ol' "you remind me of my younger self" bullcrap after a fight with him? Both scenarios could potentially throw the player in this very gray area of moral choices, while also allowing you to discuss & work with previously established antagonists, (and maybe even get attached to a few endearing grunts) before cutting ties for good.
