Long story short, the game is set in the distant future: following a nuclear apocalypse and another catastrophe that is more strictly related to the plot, Earth became impossible to live on, so humans created some floating continents and went to live on those...

      ... And everything on them is controlled by super-advanced computer. They are at great height because they need to be as far as possible from the surface's pollution, so they need controlled climate, stabilizers to keep afloat and so on... Everything regulated by informatic systems... And in the middle of that, the massive tower of Ar Tonelico, which is effectively a HUGE server that hosts all those systems.
