Puns for Gym Leaders and Special Characters Challenge

Recommended Posts

Have you ever noticed that in all Pokemon Games (canon or fan made), gym leaders usually have a name that has a relation to his/her specialization:

For example:

-Jasmine (Steel) - mine, related to iron and steel

-Roxanne (Rock) - rox, it sounds like rock

-Chili (Fire) - chili, which means hot and spicy

Now, I challenge you all to give names for Gym Leaders that have a direct or indirect relation to their type specialization! (Original Characters)

Here's mine: (OCs)

Hailey (Ice) - Hail, a storm of large icicles

Xander (Rock) - Xand, Xand sounds like sand which are particles that were once rocks

Bonus Challenge:

Try explaining puns in the Gym Leader's names of the Canon Games, Pokemon Reborn, and Rejuvenation.

Good Luck. :)

EDIT: Elite 4 Members, Important Characters, and Champions can be included in this challenge.

  • Misty - Mist (a mixture of water and gas molecules)
  • Sabrina - A fictional teenage witch
  • Bugsy - Obviously bug
  • Chuck - Possibly from Chuck Norris (who is a fighter irl)
  • Brawly - From 'Brawl' which means to fight
  • Wattson - Watts
  • Burgh - Possibly the same as Bugsy
  • Clay - From Clay, a substance present in the soil
  • Skyla - Relating to the 'sky'
  • Drayden - A combination of Dragon and Den - for e.g : a dragon living in it's den.

From Reborn, others have mentioned above, but those not :

  • Corey - Possibly a corruption of 'corrosive'
  • Luna - Pertaining to lunar which often relates to darkness
  • Samson - I don't remember this one accurately but he is someone from the Bible who destroyed a castle using only his fists.
  • Terra - Self-explanatory - 'Terra' directly means a land or terrain.

No, he's called Samson because his dad was called Sam. Yep, Samson's a guy from the Bible. Cut off all of the guy's hair and he loses his strength.

Amaria - from 'mar', which means 'sea' in Spanish, or 'amar', which means 'love'

Hardy - from 'hard rock'

Titania - play on 'titanium'

To be accurate, Samson destroyed the place of worship of the Philistines. He killed around 10000, I think, and killed himself in the process.

Other Examples:

Pryce - another 'Ice' gym leader

Whitney - white means normal, I think?

Sabrina - a witch from the comic 'Sabrina'

Flannery - flame, I think?

Winona - from wind

Victoria - from 'victory'

Fern - 'fern', obviously

Heather - rhymes with 'feather'

Cal - play on 'caliente', which means 'hot' in Spanish

Laura - from 'laurel'

Bennett - from 'net'

Lin - play on 'lindworm'

Blake - play on 'flake', as in 'snowflake'

Yes, I know that they're not Gym Leaders, so just to keep this post on-topic:

Updated Amaria - Portuguese for 'would love', and she would love it if she didn't jump off a waterfall, wouldn't she?
