The creator did go MIA for like 7 months, but recently showed up at his subreddit for the fangame last month to confirm that he's still working on it.

Thing is, he's also part of the development team for Phoenix Rising.

Eh, it's actually a rather short game currently. Booting up my save file yields that playtime is at 14 hours at the end of the latest release. Pretty short compared to most other fangames that aren't even near completion.

To sum up the story thus far:

Spoiler

- You and your brother decide to take part in a regional tournament. You and your brother manage to score high enough in the qualifying round to become part of the eight finalists. As you set out with them, you end up battling all of them in a practice round, where you get to know each of them personally.

- At the second tourney site, you knock out a rich lady from the tournament. Her father gets upset and confronts you, but Laura, another contestant, flips him off. She explains that people like that irk her greatly.

- You end up running into mysterious trainers that use Ghost type Pokemon on your way to the third site. One of the tourney organizers, Adrian, asks you if you noticed the lack of Ghost-types in the region, and tells you about what happened at the end of the previous tournament.

- The cult of shadows appears to be trying to manipulate things behind the scenes. They are a group of Ghost Pokemon enthusiasts, of which Ghost types were banned from the region following the previous tournament, where the current Champion and his rival had a major falling out, culminating in a battle where the Ghost-favoring rival was demolished by the Dragon-favoring Champion and exiled from the region. The banning of Ghost types is partly because the incident had become highly political by then - had the Champion lost, the tournaments would have been stopped instead.
- Before the 3rd match, the lighthouse at the coastal town goes out. You head out to investigate, and end up running into Shadow cult members. The keeper of the lighthouse is rescued, and the town's mayor decides to sail out in the storm to warn the capital that the Cult has returned.

- You end up defeating your brother at the 3rd match, knocking him out of the tournament. He gets angry and denounces you as his brother, and leaves.

- At the fourth site, you arrive at a desert, where another contestant who originally wanted to become an archaeologist tries to show you how to hunt fossils. He ends up running into a former friend (now rival) who took all the credit for his research in the past. Said former friend gloats that he'll keep leaving him behind in the dust, and heads to a nearby tomb to plunder its treasures. You, Laura, and the contestant decide to pursue him deep into the desert, where you run into another group digging for fossils along the way, and reach the ruins afterwards. You end up triggering a trap mechanism and fall into a catacomb. You end up running into the rival's group, and defeat everyone, right before a section of the catacomb caves in and you are found by the other group that you had seen beforehand. The contestant and his rival make amends afterwards, and when you visit the rival's house afterwards, he gives you a fossil from his personal collection.
- At the third round, you knock out the contestant, and he decides to take up archaeology again.

- Later on, you run into another contestant, who has a love of fishing. He teaches you how to fish.
- You eventually end up on a train ride that takes you to the other side of the region. While on that train ride, you end up dreaming about your brother and another tourney contestant, Laura. The dream is incredibly cryptic, talking about abandonment. As you awaken and disembark from the train, you end up meeting an odd priest from an isolated temple to the north of the region.
- You reach the next tourney site, a bustling city with its own police station - and crimes for you to solve while you wait for the next round.
- You end up running into the priest again, who turns out to be a leading admin of the Cult of Shadows. They were trying to reach some sort of agreement with an owner of the nightclub at a tourney site. You defeat him, but the authorities afterwards fail to capture him.
- At the fourth round, you knock out the fisherman.

- The remaining contestants decide they're going to take a short break before heading to the next tourney site, and you decide to visit your hometown and your mother. There, it is revealed that Eevee was your first Pokemon, gifted to you by your father, who is assumed to have passed away in the present time. Your brother was only given an empty Pokeball to catch his first Pokemon with, a Grimer.

- Your mother ends up receiving a message indicating that your brother is nearby. You find him, but he wordlessly challenges you to a battle. You beat him again, and he disappears without a word once more.
- You reach the next tourney site, a tropical island resort that you have to use Surf to reach. You run into the current Champion, who clearly doesn't care about the Cult of Shadows returning. You also end up battling Laura, who is convinced that you're going to end up being the winner of this year's tourney.
- You knock out another contestant at the fifth round, a girl who specializes in Grass types. She invites you to her friends' hut afterwards, which is revealed to be a college frat smoke joint of sorts. They ask you to get a herb from a jungle. Upon doing so, you end up smoking with them, and you end up hallucinating. You then awaken on the beach, naked.
- The next tourney site is across the sea from the coastal town, and you receive the Fly HM to head back over there. It is implied that the mayor of the town hasn't been seen since he set sail to warn the Capital, and by his less than enthusiastic response before leaving to do so, one can speculate that he wasn't even trying to do that.

That's pretty much the story as is.
