Its the sableye event. Transform the field into a dark crystal cavern (details on how to do this can be found in the field effect manual) and you'll trigger the event.

Several tiles in this room (the "bright version" at least) are glitchy. You can walk on rocks, past ledges, things like that. I initially thought it was intentional and had an effect on the Sableye event, but it doesn't seem to be the case.
