My school is having a bunch of in-costume events, and I've been meaning to do one for a while now, but there's one problem: I really don't know where to start. I figured that someone here would probably have advice for me and could maybe help me build my costume (at a distance, ofc.) The character I had in mind was Vlad III from the Fate series, aka Lancer of Black. I figure he's extra perfect for this time of year.

That sounds like a lot of work. Good cosplays can take a while to make. Do you think you have enough time?
