Damien woke up in a empty room. It took a moment for his eyes to readjust to the bright light, but when he did Damien realized he was sitting in front of a desk. Everything in the room seemed to have been dipped in white paint; the walls, the ceiling, floor, desk, even the little potted plant in the corner.
Damien looked around dazedly, mystified on how he got there or why he was there even in the first place. Something was nagging at him, demanding his attention. He was forgetting something, something really important
Before he could figure it out, the door opened and a man stepped through. He reminded Damien strongly of a businessman; closely cropped blond hair, well groomed appearance, and deep blue eyes that matched the color of his suit. The man sat down across the table from Damien and folded his hands on the desk.
"I suppose you'd like to know what you're doing here, yes?"
Damien shifted uncomfortably. "Yes."
"You are dead."
The words didn't seem to register properly in Damien's head. "I'm sorry?"
"You died, and now you've come here to the Afterlife."
"You must be mistaken. I can't be dead, I'm sitting right across for you," Damien said, risking a confused smile. He was beginning to suspect that the man across from him was not sound in the head.
"I'm perfectly sane, thank you very much. It's you that's the issue."
Damien swallowed, his mouth suddenly very, very dry. "I-I don't-"
The man's face softened a bit. "Would you like me to show you?"
The man pulled out a tablet from underneath the desk and placed it on the table. The screen flickered on and Damien saw firefighters running towards a crashed car. The car was completely smashed in on the front, having veered off the road and hit a tree. The firefighters reached into the car and pulled out a younger man. His face and clothes were badly bloodied and his arm was bent at a strange angle, but there was no mistaking who it was.
It was Damien.
Damien pushed away from the table and held his head in his hands. "Oh God," he said. Memories came flooding back. The car wheel jerking, his car yanking itself out of control. Damien was falling, falling, and then...
"I'm sorry, Damien. I really am. I know death can be hard on someone, but there's something else."
Damien turned back to the man, unable to believe how this could get any worse. The man's face was furrowed with concern and sympathy.
"Damien, you're not supposed to be dead."
