2nd Gym door locked - but puzzles and battles completed

Nevermind, I succeeded in accidentally fully deleting my save. I had a second one that I'd been playing on a different computer, so I'll just stick with that game. -
I completed all of the battles, and successfully completed all of the quizzes in the 2nd gym, but the door to the gym leader is locked, and Fern never showed up to battle. My 2 friends did what I did and their games allowed them to progress. Am I missing something, or did I hit a glitch? Thanks for your input. I am quite stuck.
