  1. So this is my all-time favorite fan game and I loved the story, but it's been a while so I don't remember a lot of what happened. I'm wondering, what do you guys usually do to catch up with these episodic releases? Do you replay from the beginning or find some kind of summary of previous episodes somewhere? Also, if I start a new game, is there a way to transfer my old team between saves? Thanks.

  2. I was wondering if Aelita might have been inspired in any way from the character Aelita from the old French animated series, Code Lyoko. It's the only place I've seen the name before, and they share similarities in personality and appearance (when Rejuvenation's Aelita transforms). The show also had a lookalike of her with the same anagram as Aelita's predecessor in Rejuvenation, Taelia

Code Lyoko was a pretty good show and one of my favorites growing up, so I thought it would be cool if my favorite fangame took inspiration from it. But perhaps it's just a coincidence?

  3. So I'm playing through it right now and just wanted to add my thoughts. Gameplay wise it's one of the best fangames I've played, up there with Insurgence. There are so many new features added that it's hard not to appreciate the game. There's fusion, actual boss battles (with huge HP bars and no status effects), collectible trading cards that buff your team, new types, levels over 100, and more.

But like you said, I think the main weakness of the game is in the writing. I'll try to be light on spoilers here.

    Spoiler

Firstly, the character development is inconsistent; it felt like both rivals did a complete 180 in personality around the 8th gym. I get what the writer was going for but it felt too sudden a change, and without proper buildup. The characters also just seem to vanish from the plot for large periods of time and do nothing while they're gone, so the world feels really static. In comparison, in Reborn/Rejuvenation you can usually understand what the main characters were doing while they were gone, and catch up with them later. In Empyrean, it seems like no one does anything but collect badges or sit in a lab when they're not with you.

Empyrean has a very ambitious, dark plot and is heavy on the lore. I can appreciate this in itself, but the execution is pretty poor imo. The story starts off with you looking for your dad while collecting badges to get stronger, but later on you deal with cults, super-powered psychic beings, robots, and other stuff. Which is cool on its own, but the plot is all over the place and really poorly paced. Outside of 2 or 3 boss battles that don't explain anything, it feels like almost nothing is accomplished in the main story until you get your 8th badge, and only then does the actual story begin. And by then, you have lvl 100 Pokemon already, so I'm not even sure how much there is that can be done at that point. The story would be a lot better if it was more linear, with progress being given to the main story and mysteries with every arc, rather than piling on teasers for most of the game and delivering on everything only at the end. Also, they give you a phone to call people but their answers actually make no sense in the context of the story a lot of the time lol.

    EDIT: Postgame update

Just finished the post-game. The game's difficulty ramps up hard after you beat the E4. Many of the post-game bosses are absurdly difficult to beat even with a stacked team and cheap strategies. I felt this hurt gameplay a bit because battles became a lot more frustrating to play out, and you almost feel forced to pack your team with legendaries and OP mons and spam setup just to keep up.

As far as the story goes, I felt most of my complaints ended up being true. A lot of story content happens after you hit lvl 100 and beat the 8th badge, but even after you hit the lvl 150 cap, there are many unresolved plot threads and characters disappearing for the entire story. It seems some plot threads, like the Baltia arc, aren't planned to be completed either.

On the plus side, Blitz' character arc is wrapped up really well, and the final battle with him is genuinely great.

TL;DR I'd give it a 7/10. 9/10 if you ignore the story. Excellently engineered with a lot of amazing new features, but a poorly written story and inconsistent characters. It's a bit sad, because I think this game has the potential to be up there with Insurgence, Reborn, and Rejuvenation, but it needs a LOT of polishing when it comes to the story and characters, and a lot of rebalancing in late-game battles.

  4. So I reverted my game to the scene where you meet Melanie, and redid everything up to the start of Chapter 13, but the bug is still there. Erin and Melia aren't at the bottom of route 9 or in the library. What do I do now? I don't have any earlier backups, so I'm not sure what to do.

  5. Hi. I'm currently on chapter 13, in the Rose Theatre. After beating Souta, instead of meeting Erin and Melia in route 9, I took the train to Grand Dream Stadium and did the tournament up to just before the final battle with Adam. Now I can't trigger any of the cutscenes in route 9, the library, or the desert. Could this be fixed so I can do the chapter 13 content? Thanks.

  6. So at the start of chapter 13, after you beat Souta and receive the books from the Puppet Master, I think you're supposed to head down route 9 and trigger a cutscene with Erin and Melia. Then you go to the library with them and meet Reina/Kanon/Huey, and go to the desert together.

In my playthrough, I think I took the train to the tournament instead and did most of it, up to the final battle. Now I can't go back and trigger any of the cutscenes in route 9, the library, or the desert. Is there any way for me to do the chapter 13 stuff still?

  7. Hi everyone. So I'm a big fan of Reborn and Rejuvenation, and the main reason why I enjoy them is the story and characters.

Does anyone know any books with a similar overall tone of story as Reborn/Rejuvenation? I'm not sure what genre I'd be looking for either, I'm guessing something like dark fantasy/YA? Of course, it doesn't have to be Pokemon related.
