  1. when neither of your favorite characters, best girls Flora and Erin are on the list ;-;

@Norman Guy is right, my friends. Melia and Zetta? Pfft. They’re rip-off blonde’s. Aelita?

    Spoiler

literally the same character as like two others

Nancy? Still dead. Saki? He was alive before she was, making him cooler.

Honestly, let’s just replace the whole cast with Thomas. Everyone can become gravel for him to step on.

  2. Spoiler

Y'know, even though "Do Nothing" leads to the better ending, I think I still prefer how "Try and escape" plays through. Everyone dying really lends well into how Melia's character ends up progressing, and you actually get more information out of it in my opinion. The whole thing with Melia giving up hope near the end feels so much more fitting after the "Try and escape". Just my thoughts though :D, how 'bout everyone else?

    1) When you get the keys a variable goes from 2 to 3, so yes, they do stuff.

    2) Please don't post stuff about the game that isn't in the current version, especially if you are not going to give any spoiler warning and you are posting in this thread. Yes, you have RPGMaker and you can see it, but it was probably not intended to be seen until it's a thing that happens in the game. Respect the development team and respect all the people that want to enjoy the game playing it normally.

Oops, that was my mistake. I put the spoiler tag around the post, and I’m sorry if I spoiled or inconvenienced someone in any way.

  4. On your Xerneas theory... I have a feeling that the final Pokémon on Melia’s team is going to be a shiny Xerneas .-.

Prior to going to GDC, Melia says that she still needs one last team member, and that she doesn’t actively search for them herself, but they come to her instead. It’s a bit of a stretch but I think the addition of any other non-climatic Pokémon would be a really awkward place in the story. I’d much rather have the player get it though... but yeah.

What do these Jailer Keys do? Are they for some sort of Sidequest?

    Spoiler

They don’t have any use as of now. They don’t appear in the bag, nor do they activate any switches or variables. They don’t do anything, so it is most likely a mistake meant for a later episode.

EDIT: They actually do change a variable. Thanks for informing me, walpurgis.

Looking at the map, the cell containing the Bladestar grunts has several inactive event files on the door, which is probably a sign that the cell door is going to be opened. I’m guessing the mission Flora has planned for you and Erin is to free those grunts.

  6. @ArmoredGuardian I got curious and checked Cosmia's sprite.

    Spoiler

Looky, looky. Her hair matches the badges exactly, even down par to the pink-left and black-right.

Comet probably looks similar, but we don't know since he was impersonating us.

From her appearance and personality, I'm guessing she's the Fairy gym-leader. I'd assume Comet is the Dark one too, but there actually already is one who was turned into stone. Or we'll end up battling Comet instead anyways.

    I think you're onto something...

  7. @Silver Boy (About the professional help comment)

Interestingly enough, Sigmund would actually be perfect for treating Amaria. ECT is used to temporary offset severe depression, which is what Amaria is suffering through.

    Spoiler

Anyways, I have the feeling that her fate in the Reshiram route will remain completely vague or unresolved, or she’ll come back as a completely different person.

Why would her fate be unresolved rather than it being confirmed to be suicide/whatever death? Because if she dies, our badge is invalidated again and there isn’t a Water Reserve Leader. It’s also too late to even introduce a brand new character entirely at this point...hopefully.

So her coming back as a new person. The most likely thing for that is she joins Team Meteor, which everyone has been discussing. She would do that out of spite towards us, or Lin could manipulate her to her side.

The Zekrom divergence is a pretty big one though. She’s still around in that one and active, so her vanishing in the Reshiram route or face-turn is going to have massive effect on a future episode. If she’s involved in anything later on in the Zekrom route, the Reshiram one would probably have to be so altered it’s a brand new episode on its own, which is just insane...but surprisingly not too unlogical.

  8.

    Spoiler

Lol, yes. Gotta do everything for the husbando extra story content, am I right??

Besides his constant jokes about depression and telling the player that they should get therapy, he does say some really interesting stuff. Some while you're wandering around, some in the Mirage Tower side quest. I listed everything I remember, besides what you've mentioned.

    - Team Meteor used to be something like shrine guardians and watched over the Citadel before Lin came into the picture.

    - Taka has something to do with why Luna acts sort of delusional.

    - ZEL was told by Solaris to watch over Taka, but apparently Zero isn't doing too good. I wonder why :D?

    - Blake used to babysit Taka when he was younger, and Blake actually likes kids.

    - Most of the Team Meteor stuff has been moved into Labradorra City.

    - Terra is never around in Team Meteor bases, and Lin insists on keeping her on the team.

    - Sigmund has become very obsessed with Lin.

    - Taka never knew his mother, since she was literally hired to just have him and then she left.

    - Reborn's founders built the city over the Citadel and were trying to hide it.

    - Sirius's behavior and violence has gotten much worse since Lin came.

    - Solaris blames Ame, as Ame had created the league which attracted everyone here

    - Team Meteor has another base up in the Carnelia Region, and Taka says that Team Meteor will try and lure you to it, and he warns you to not go.

    Spoiler

In the Mirage Tower, there's a lot of information lore-wise, and possibly for foreshadowing as well. In the very top room, you'll find a sword on a plaque and Taka tells you a story about it.

Basically, he says that when Arceus had created the world, Giratina appeared in Reborn as well. Giratina's presence began to distort everything, and it was an enemy of his ancestors and Arceus. Arceus ended up defeating Giratina in a battle, and Giratina went away. However, it had left many distortions across the region. The tower was built as training against those distortions, and it was a tradition to climb it.

The sword on the plaque is a Honedge, but apparently what used to be there was the original weapon used to defeat Giratina. Interestingly, I think Taka mentions something about you either turning that sword against Giratina or against Arceus.

In Episode 17, after the battle with Titania, Lin says that the player would keep the bracelets. The conversation moves forward which makes Titania think that Lin and the PC are working together. Asking that, Lin actually replies with "Aren't we?". There's also the fact that Lin specifically asked that the PC not be harmed at the whole Devon escapade. And true enough, the PC's the only one who got out without so much a broken nail.

Lin's just mystery in the form of a character. We don't really know who she is, what she's up to, why she's doing what she's up to, or how she's even doing what she's currently doing. Even 17 episodes later, we still don't have a solid answer to any of these questions about her. Which is kind of worrying considering we're only 2+ episodes away from Reborn ending, iirc.

I do highly believe that the Lin we see isn't real though. "Real" is subjective, but she's definitely NOT as we think she is. I hope that it's more than just a puppet-master thing though. That just seems too obvious. Anywho, I'm excited to get to battle her because that means we'll get a VS sprite of her.

    Spoiler

She already has one! It was removed from the graphics folder I think, and this is the one that was used in the original league, so there's a possibility this isn't even the one she'll have. Spoilers!

  10. Spoiler

Good taste in husbando my friend

    ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I agree with a lot of things everyone has been saying! I have a few mixed feelings on Lin, and it has more to do with her execution of a character, but I also really like her in the game. She’s a great addition, and I’m super excited to see what happens with her later to come.

My issue is that she’s being built up over the game as a very formidable threat, but whatever she does it’s kind of working counterproductive on her own part.

The easiest way to build up a character that’s going to be a final boss is to have them beat the stuffing out of characters that have already been established as strong with ease.

Our introduction to her is when she takes Saphira and her giant Steelix down in oneshot. That scene is really nice and all, especially since we know how powerful Saphira and Steelix are already.

But the issue lies in the fact when we see Saphira again. Completely unscathed and also with two of the keys. Lin hasn’t defeated Saphira at all, and it just makes Lin look less of a larger than life foe because the stakes have been now reset at that point.

In 16, Lin defeats Ame under a big type-disadvantage. Ame is introduced as the freaking Champion, so Lin beating the Champion means something, right?

Not quite. Ame’s introduction of Champion without context or previous knowledge works badly here. We don’t know how powerful Ame is to begin with, and our first hearings of Ame in action is that she and Adrienn were overpowered and defeated. Not good first impressions.

So Lin’s defeat of her is kind of meaningless. Her being the Champion is kind of meaningless here, because said Champion hasn’t really shown anything Champion-ish to begin with.

...but that scene where Hydreigon bites off Ame’s head was pretty freaking cool, I’ll admit.

E17 is a lot better in these regards! Sadly, it’s only in one path though. Lin spooking around and reviving herself makes her more mysterious, but not more formidable.

So I’ll have to focus on the Reshiram path. Lin tricking Titania, and then immediately defeating her was a great scene in these regards! Titania was previously established as insanely strong, and she didn’t exactly get away completely unaffected. Her actions and behavior actually changes in regards to what Lin had done to her. So Lin’s actions are finally shown with big impact here!

Some other stuff in regards to Lin’s own personality has already been covered. I’m super biased to icy-cold villains though, so I can’t exactly cover it without gushing.

I hope we have more interactions with her as we had in E17, but some early showcases of her worked negatively for her.

Regardless, all aboard the suffering train!

  11. Spoiler

Another thing is that Amaria’s a hardcore yandere in both paths, but it’s just less apparent in the Zekrom one.

In the Zekrom path, she’s putting up a front because Titania is already there and already talked to her. In the Reshiram one, Titania’s gone and you come before Titania, so Amaria acts however she wants.

I can assume Titania’s presence is keeping her in her senses.

    "The mountain top is super-heated!"
    *    Tailwind lasts 6 turns and creates Strong Winds for its duration
    *    Activates Gale Wings during Strong Winds

I wonder if this field is for Tesla since her Talonflame got nerfed. And don't Strong Winds completely absolve Flying weaknesses too? Yikes.

It looks pretty sweet though. And an absolute nightmare as well!

  13. To be honest, unless this does anything good for Melia’s character or advances upon Rejuv’s own story, it seems kind of contrived. The MC is a silent protagonist, and it’s very difficult to do show such a relationship when they don’t have set mannerisms to begin with. This kind of makes any affection feel one-sided, since the MC can’t exactly respond.

However, it has been established that the MC is their own character in this game. They even get some sort of character development after Blacksteeple, so they have that going for them. If that was expanded upon further in the game and the MC was portrayed with silent as a trait and more humane qualities, then whatever relationship interactions would be more feasible.

Also there’s the issue with Melia. Poor Melia. I desperately want her to be a good character.

Melia’s issue is that, as literally everyone and their dog has stated, she is very Mary Sue-like. She really has no flaws, and what the game thinks and states as flaws are not expanded upon, and her supposed flaws end up becoming excuses for her actions.

Out of all things you can pair up, a silent character and a perfect character are one of the absolute worst. There are multiple reasons for this, and the main being that these leads to no chemistry, which is essential in writing a good relationship.

The thing about relationships is that they are supposed to complete each other’s faults and balance them out. In writing, this adds dynamics, and it’s often utilized when creating fluid scenes between the two romancee’s.

There lies the problem. Since there is no traits for the MC and no faults for Melia, any scene or drama happening in their relationship would feel extremely pointless. Any interesting dynamics in their relationship would be virtually nonexistent, since both are blank slates interacting with each other. There wouldn’t be any drama since there isn’t any room for any to begin with since neither have complimenting personality.

The other main problem is how a relationship like this would leading like. Since the MC cannot talk as a silent protagonist, and Melia is so intertwined in every single plot thread of the game, the MC character would end up just being a coattail to her. She would be the one speaking for them, she would be the one to broadcast the MC’s non-existent emotions. This isn’t even a relationship at that point—that’s just someone dictating their actions.

So in the end, it would be really awkward and dysfunctional. And I just made a stupidly lost post about the love life of a player character and the blond NPC, meaning my life cannot possibly sink any lower.

I never really answered the question though: Would I want romance in the game between Melia and the MC?

My answer... 👀 👀 my fanfictions will be canon

  14. These look really nice. Aria and Axel’s change are my favorites.

I don’t know though, I kind of prefer Aevia’s old sprite for some reason. It might just be that her hair was a lighter shade of pink that I like more, but it’s not too important.

These really do look unique though. I’m excited to see the NB character designs and the time travel outfit change!

Tristan is extremely difficult. However, I found a working strategy that involved slowing down the Lopunny with Luxray, and then Killing it with Primeape. I use Boldore to defeat Staraptor, then I proceed to wreck everything with another Primeape.

I raised 4 Primeapes specifically for this fight.

Does Anyone want to talk about Tristan... As a character? He's obviously a ghost who can't sleep. I think that when this game returns in 2018, he should receive more character development. I find the fact that he is a ghost who wanders the earth rather interesting. It would be a shame to have him as a throwaway boss battle.

How would it work with the Twist at the end?

    Giant spoilers for Desolation but

I never really thought him as a ghost to be honest. After the whole dream reveal, I think his placement had to do something with that. Anything can be accomplished in the dream, afterall ;)

  16. Pokemon fangames are at their peak right now. There are tons of projects going on at the moment. Some are public, some are private, and some probably haven't been announced yet. But there's a lot happening, and I'm interested on everyone's perspective on what they're doing.

Unless you're a super-optimist, there are some lousy sides in making games. Ones you put off doing for a while or try and get them done as quickly as you can, just so you don't have to deal with it. They're your foil, your ultimate weakness, and the death of you.

So dramatic stuff aside, what's your least favorite part in the process of working on your fangame? And this doesn't just apply to fangames, but to pretty much any project in general. Scripting? Mapping? Writing a character? If you rant about it enough, you can make everyone else feel your pain!

For me it's balancing, or just making Pokemon battles in general. I swear, I'll do anything  but balancing. I'll let a blank document with the word TEAMS scrawled on the top sit in front of me for hours, while in the background I watch the Important Videos playlist loop over and over again. I'd rather torment myself with cringy bootleg movies rather than work on battles or distribution. This topic itself is being created right now when I should be making teams fair.

I would call myself lazy, but the sheer amount of work I do just so I can get out of balancing the game is depressingly high.

Another reason why we include the gym-leader system is because it is included in pokemon essentials. Since it's a used and successful idea, people do not usually bother to create something new and they end up with the gym leaders.

But by no means this system is absolute! If you are creative enough and willing to put work on this, you can come up with another system even more interesting than the gym-leader one.

Yeah, it might be a bit more of a simpler process in gyms than having a new type of system entirely. Now that I think of it, it might take a bit for the player to get used to it too. I like your thoughts on this though!

    8 minutes ago, ssbCasper said:

Gym leaders are certainty not a necessity in games.  I can't remember the name off the top but their was a fan game that came out ages ago that was focused on you graduating from the academy and then going into an occupation like Ranger, Police officer etc. As others have stated they have just become a mainstay and are right there in front of you when using essentials. I'm sure most of us would love to see either a new system (like trials) that still have a gym leader vibe. Or something completely unique like (example incoming) a wandering trainer gaining new skills and learning life lessons from other strong trainers on a road to reaching some ultimate goal.

I think I remember something similar, but it wasn't a fangame. It was a ROM hack, and you played as four different roles in this medieval setting. All I remember is that they switched from ROM hacking to Essentials.

The absolute absence of any type of gym-like system was what I was thinking about a lot, and your take is a pretty good example of what I meant!

  18. 3 minutes ago, Star Arcana said:

I really believe that Pokémon adventures can deviate from the traditional formula and come out BETTER for it. My reasoning for this is quite simple, it would provide a unique experience and force the creator to come up with a new story-structure. Phoenix Rising is a great example of a fangame that's moved away from gyms, and it's looking great so far. Colosseum and XD are two canon games that avoided gyms completely, which gave fans different motivations and goals.

We've all played the classic "BATTLE THE GYMS, STOP THE EBIL PEOPLEZ, BE A CHAMPION" type of Pokémon journey, and while it can be made into a fresh experience, I think trying to go in a completely new direction would be a very nice change of pace.

I actually completely forgot about Phoenix Rising and the spin-off's when creating this topic, shame on me lol

Anyway, it's nice to see other's perspective on this. I've been wondering about the story vs. battling stuff for a while now, and which one should be given priority at this point.

2 minutes ago, Swamp King said:

In my opinion gyms aren't a necessity! You can pretty much do anything in your story without adding gyms and it still would be good. I believe we are adding gyms to our games for sentimental reasons. We have grown up with them and in our minds we believe that a pokemon game should emphasize on making the trainer the very best like none ever was! We have an established way with which we can define how the trainer can become the best (the pokemon league) and therefore almost any game creator is planning to add gyms in his/her game. This is a proof that we have not gotten bored of this idea but I believe many would enjoy a brand new experience in a Pokemon game.

I never considered the sentimental part of gyms, but it does make sense. I think gyms are awesome, but I've been kind of curious about the other side of the pond without them. Thank you for your input!
