  1. I feel like the Beamer Grid should be talked about more.

We know now that Shiv, Nova and Aurora can teleport there at will, and it always has been the most mysterious part of the game for me - even the scientists know very little about it. I wonder if the Grid will become more important later.

Way to start the new year, a bit edgy but hey

Considering what happened in Episode 3, I think it's very fitting. Desolation has a habit of shitting on edgy villains as is.

Quite excited for this one since it seems the two main characters are those we know so little about.

  3. I've playing for 2 minutes and I already found a huge bug and I must come start over because of it. In the boat if you go in the room when the bomb is and find it before even going upstair at all you won't be able to continue the game because all doors will be locked and ava problems with the pansage will block you from going upstairs.

This was reported a while ago, make sure to check the known bugs list.

  4. And also something else I noticed very early is that Rock Smash has a base power of a whopping 75 instead of 40. My Combusken having a STAB 75 fighting move so early in the game snatched so many souls that it's ridiculous...

I even tested it myself because I couldn't believe it. Comparing the damage output of Double Kick vs. Rock Smash confirmed that it was indeed possibly intentional?

He said in the past he buffed Rock Smash so it could be a viable move, not just something you HAVE to teach.

  5. Dreams and their meaning are a recurring theme in Desolation so I was thinking - what if the actual world of Desolation is itself a dream? IIRC, Caz mentioned he was inspired by Inception, which suggests a 'dream within a dream' scenario. This could explain inconsistencies within the game that for some reason Caz hasn't changed - perhaps they are clues, that the dream hasn't been made to be perfect. That whoever controls the dream, like Nova wants to control her own, makes mistakes in their craft and can't keep the players indefinitely fooled. Mysterious characters like Shiv, who always seem composed, may already understand this which explains why they aren't afraid - because it is all a dream.

The game also has impossible blockbuster moments such as Ava leaping from the clouds and somehow surviving - moments such as these are that of fantasy, perhaps the fantasy world of the one creating the dream. Furthermore, perhaps it is Shiv who controls this dream, which could explain how he is able to freely teleport around it and seemingly control it - as though lucid. Nova may also be in control of it, which would explain why Shiv and Nova fight for a seemingly unnatural power that the player has no part of.

Just my thoughts - let me know what you think.

  6. What if at the very end after collecting all the color pieces we get a rainbow plate. This plate could be something as OP as like getting arceus or ho-oh or maybe even something more creative like a Kecleon with op moves/stats

Well, Caz did say that we would get a really good reward upon collecting all... 7? pieces.

  7. I don't know about a Magmaritzer, but there is one Link Stone located just before the 3rd Gym.

    EDIT: Quick Question~

Where is the Blackview Teleporter? (to activate its portal in the grid)

Pretty sure it's located in a house on the right of the Trade Centre in an alleyway.

  8. Oh, something just occurred to me that I'm wondering about.

It was said that the person who was supposed to pick us up from the clouds and take us to Cellia is someone who we haven't met yet. But when we fall from the clouds and black out, some of the dialogue when we're out cold is something like "You must be one of Aderyn's? So I guess I didn't end up picking you up in time." So did the person who was originally going to pick us up just see us knocked out on the mountain and be like "Oh well, I guess I didn't make it in time" and leave? XD

The game seems to be all about dreams right? So maybe instead of Tristan being a ghost, perhaps he was simply a dream that the player character invented. This would explain why Tristan seems to know what he physically shouldn't. Perhaps he was initially a hallucination after the fall and the player characters mind was looking for support? Which would explain how Tristan, the hallucination, somehow 'knew' you needed to be picked up? Either way, it seems like Caz is taking a psychological approach to the stories future, so these theories could be plausible.

  9. I just wanted to offer my thoughts on this game, if you don't mind. I've played through Insurgence, Reborn, Rejuvenation, Zeta and Sweet so I at least feel like I've played enough fangames to critique.

Gameplay: The gameplay is quite solid. The amount of content you put into one episode is impressive and the Rangers Quests and Credits are particularly great additions. There are some bugs, but it seems that you are quick to resolve them. The encounter rates could use some tweaking and some Gym Leader's, particularly Tristan, should have their difficulty edited somewhat. Asides from these minor gripes it's a very solid experience, fun to play.

Art/Graphics: I myself don't weigh graphical detail to be particularly important, but still. The artwork in this game is well done and is a definite improvement from the games roots. Your mapping in Episode 1 sometimes feels dry, but the mapping in following Episodes, particularly your most recent work, is of very high quality. The spriting is well done too, although I feel that Connor's portrait and Ava's spriting is still somewhat a WIP. I hope to see a selection of custom trainer sprites in the future for general trainers.

The story of Episode 1 seems very much a warm up. Although offering a good experience on its own, it serves very little in the overall plot asides from introducing the characters. I suppose this works, as you're easing the player into the world.

The story of Episode 2 was a great improvement and the introduction to your overall plot was done nicely. I feel that the screen time you give characters is slightly unbalanced, but this will likely change in the future. The Nova and Shiv dilemma is interesting because it's obvious that you want players to choose Shiv, by giving his backstory immediately before giving the choice, it's obvious that you want players to side with Shiv for some reason. I wonder how this will play out.

Episode 3 was stellar. The Silver Rise was a nice warm up to the Episode although felt dragged out at points, probably to do with the high encounter rate but the rest was... wow. Obviously I cannot go into detail because of spoilers but the story experience in Episode 3 was just mindblowing, especially when I was highly skeptical of this fangame at first. The ending in particular was done flawlessly, I can tell you're probably a writer of sorts. The story of this game is easily its strongest point and if you're one for a well written story I would suggest this.

I didn't feel like this game would go places in Episode 1, truthfully, as the quality just seemed quite low. I have been pleasantly proven wrong. It's not often that a game, especially a fangame, can open up my mind so much. I'm really excited to see where the story goes. The minor issues I've explained above do little to bring down this fangame and I'd probably give it around 9/10.
