  1. I remember trying this in V12.  I just wanted the victory scene and eventually came to the realization that spamming Metronome for hours was not the way to go.  I think I spent a couple of days trying to get it, but eventually gave up and just lowered the difficulty to easy.  I'll probably do that again when I restart for V13 (just waiting for the third patch to come out).

  2. In case you're wondering, using only Normal types is definitely no longer a recommended strategy.  I finally managed it, but it required Noctowl bred to have Insomnia and Whirlwind to get rid of Drifblim (resetting its stat boosts and removing Unburden), Chandelure to be brought out by Whirlwind, Obstagoon with at least 108 speed, Watchog with Hypnosis and Crunch (fast enough to put Spiritomb and Dusclops to sleep), Alolan Raticate with Sucker Punch (to break Mimikyu's Disguise), Stoutland with Crunch, and Pyroar with Fire Spin.

Noctowl was my favorite part of the strategy.  Chris247's Persian probably could have replaced Watchog and might have been more consistent than a 90 accuracy Hypnosis.

  3. Ah.  In V12, the battle was in the auditorium and the Cursed Field turned into a Blessed Field.  That said, you might still be able to use Alolan Raticate (Crunch and Sucker Punch) and Stoutland (Crunch and Scrappy ability), as well as other Normal types with various coverage.  I'm working on testing it.  I found a backup from before the battle, but I have to play through the Goldenleaf Town section again.  I'll let you know how it goes.

Edit:  It is not going well at all.  Narcissa has gone from the easiest gym in a Normal Monotype run to one of the hardest.  I would not recommend using all Normal types in V13.

  4. I haven't played V13 yet, so I don't know if this still works, but my favorite strategy against her was to use a team of only Normal Pokemon.  My team was Jigglypuff, Ambipom, Stoutland, Girafarig, Lopunny, and Alolan Raticate.  I led with Jigglypuff and used Flash to change the field.  Presumably because all of my Pokemon were Normal, she never changed the field back.  Jigglypuff died after using Flash, but Girafarig swept through half the team with Echoed Voice.  Lopunny swept through the other half with Return.

As I said, I don't know if this still works in V13, but it's an easy way to win if it does.

The answer's to why they can use it and we can't is simple: it adds to the game's challenge. By the time the GLs start using Megas, the player already has access to a vast array of options they can use to tackle any boss efficiently, provided they're willing to put in the effort to hard counter that one in particular. Add in the fact that the AI still isn't the most effective ATM, and it makes sense that they're gonna need some sort of extra advantage to deal with us and our increasingly almighty arsenal in a meaningful manner. Though that does bring the worrisome question of what the bosses are gonna have to pull now that we have these tools at our disposal from the next Version onward, but I guess we'll just have to cross that bridge when we get there.

They'll probably have even more absurd EV counts and items that will make them immune to their weaknesses.  The former is definitely on the table, considering that's what they're already doing.  Gym 14's Torterra has 450 HP, 252 Atk, 512 Def, and 320 SpD on Intense, not to mention its crest that swaps its weaknesses and resistances.  I would expect to see numbers like that on Normal and higher numbers on Intense.

Stunfisk Crest: Increases its Defense by 1.3x, gives it immunity to Water-type attacks, and restores 25% of its HP when it gets hit with one.

Kecleon Crest: Merges its Special Attack and Special Defense stats.

I feel like your Kecleon one just turns it into a worse Greninja.  Sure, it would be more bulky than Greninja and even slightly stronger, but I'd rather have Greninja's speed on a Protean user.

On a conceptual level I'm not a big fan of the Leafeon/Glaceon ones, or Torterra one. I haven't figured out a way to know in advance if a mon has a crest or not (is there?), and it feels like swapping resistances without telling the player is a bit unfair.

Crested Pokemon have an icon next to their health.  Personally, I had a great time figuring out the Torterra one.  I went for a Blizzard thinking I was going to one-shot it, then saw it do about 10 damage and the not very effective text come up.  After the initial shock wore off, I had to come up with a new strategy for dealing with it.

You got a point, maybe the 20% on dark isnt irrelevant, but anyways, how did you manage to teach psychic fangs to your stoutland ? Where did you find a pokemon using it to teach it to your smeargle ?

I don't have a Smeargle.  Static Pokemon in this game start with an egg move.  In this case, it was the static Lillipup you can get in one of the Gearen apartments after visiting Goldenwood Forest.  The egg move it starts with is Psychic Fangs.

  9. I've finished Angie on my Normal monotype.  Honestly, she was pretty easy this time around.  Funnily, it was partially due to the "irrelevant" 20% increase to Dark.  Two Sucker Punches from Alolan Raticate took down Mamoswine.  I considered having Castform get rid of the hail with Sunny Day or Rain Dance, but I found I didn't need to do that.  Psychic Fangs from Stoutland got rid of the Aurora Veil and it survived a Blizzard, so the hail didn't really bother me.  Keep in mind the TM for Brick Break is available and is super-effective against all of Angie's Pokemon (except Alolan Ninetales, but it's still neutral).  For the rest of her team, I followed the saying "If you can't beat them, join them."  I turned my Ditto into her Beartic and swept the rest of her team.  Ironically, Beartic has Superpower and Rock Slide, both of which are strong against Ice.  No Fire required.

  10. Personally, the only trouble I had with Ryland was his Torterra.  Once I found out my Hariyama could get off a Belly Drum to outspeed and one-shot both Torterra and Claydol with Knock Off, the battle was pretty easy.

Against Crawli, I usually don’t have trouble with him.  You want the ability to use Fire again?  Just use Sunny Day and start one-shotting his entire team.  The Rainbow Field even overwrites the Forest Field.  Give your Sunny Day Pokemon a Heat Rock and it should last the whole battle.  The only reason I had issues with him in my current run is because I’m doing a Mono-Normal Intense No Items challenge.  The only Normal that gets Wide Guard by level up is Regigigas.  Fortunately, Terajuma offers a Castform for Sunny Day.

Angie I admit I usually do have issues with, but that’s just because it’s a difficult fight.  So what if I can’t use Fire?  Ice is weak to plenty of other things.  Your point of “limited options” is hardly relevant here.

Interesting. Where'd you get that many rare candies though?

You get one on the SS Oceana, two in Gearen (secret area of Venam's gym and left entrance of Gearen Sewers), one in Sheridan (Cute Pokemon request), and two in Chrysalis Manor (hedge maze and locked room).  That's six available.  You can also buy one for 10 AP.  I don't know if that's repeatable or not, since I always spend my AP on the Golden items and EV room cards.

The problem with this is that vulpix doesn't survive a +1 multipulse from her lopunny.

You might be able to get away with a Baby Doll Eyes instead, but I don't remember if Multipulse is physical or special.  On a related note to the Rare Candy, you could evolve Seel at Level 34 for more bulk and have it gain its Ice-typing so it won't take residual damage from the hail.  Doing this would also allow you to get Brine (Level 33), which has the same power as Aurora Beam, but does double damage when the target is at 50% or less HP.  If the Baby Doll Eyes does lower Lopunny's attack enough for this strategy, I would recommend replacing Perish Song with Brine.  This would lead to a long battle and I don't know if 20 Aurora Beams would be enough.

In general, I would highly recommend getting another Seel.  I just noticed that you only have five Pokemon, so another Seel would allow for a full party and slightly better odds.  If you wanted to keep Perish Song on something, you could put it on this one.
