    UPDATE ON MODERATION

    AND OTHER RELEVANT INFORMATION

    In the wake of recent activity, a decision was made to update the manner in which the PokéNations 3 event is administered and organised, and to publish the same in the form of a public service announcement, with a view to render transparent the workings of the event's administration and enable it to be more open to scrutiny and compliance. The following guidelines and general information are to be noted.

    -

    NOTE ON GUIDELINES TO PARTICIPANT BEHAVIOUR

    Spoiler

    General advisory to participants on maintaining desirable conduct:

    • Be respectful: The fundamental rules of human courtesies and decencies apply. These include respecting and abiding by staff or committee notices, decisions and requests, being courteous to others and cognizant of their sensibilities, and being civil and mature in disagreements and discourse with others.
    • Note on trolling: Humour that is malicious in nature or which causes discomfiture to others is not appreciated, and it is advisable to cease when directed to do so by staff or the other party concerned. Evasive or injurious behaviour is likewise unappreciated.
    • Respect others' game choices: PokéNations is a gaming event, and it is inevitable that different members make different choices. Please keep discourse reasonable and civil; no player may threaten or abuse another player or attack their game or strategic choices or harass them for the same. Good sportsmanship is expected of all participants.
    • Note on maturity: Refrain from employing abusive, defamatory, hurtful or insulting language, content or conduct. Jokes and ribaldry in small doses are welcome, but all participants and staff alike are required to be moderate and refrain from repetitive spamming and/or discomfiting other members.
    • Anti-Ghosting rule: Ghosting is the practice of directing the actions of another player in their battle, directly or indirectly, with the view to control their decisions and influence the course of the match. Matches are independent and the autonomy of either player is to be respected and upheld; while giving advice prior to the match or constructive (and solicited) criticism after its conclusion are both acceptable, leading or aiding the participant, furnishing them with external information, or manipulating their decisions during the course of the match are not tolerated.
    • Note on feedback: Any grievances, anomalies or issues may be brought to the direct notice of any of the committee representatives or Discord server moderators, who are all expected to maintain mature, discreet and open engagement with the members. It is requested of members to approach the committee to sort out any contentions rather than to accumulate grievances or resort to indirect expressions of the same.

    NOTE ON MODERATION AND PENALTY

    Spoiler

    General advisory to participants on the nature and manner of penalties earned and the consequences thereof:

    Penalties are earned for infringing upon the rules of the game or challenge of the week or for violating the guidelines of expected conduct. A strike system has been established to keep track of infringements by individuals, both participants as well as staff/committee members. Engaging in any acts that contravene the rules and guidelines of the events as specified earn consequences as stated subsequently. A tally of individual strikes shall be maintained and displayed in an appropriate channel on the Nations3 General Discord server.

    RULE PENALTIES: Accorded for breaking the rules specified in each challenge or match, or for disrupting the course of a match. Permanent strikes are not awarded for rule breaking, though repeated offenses may earn a participant a temporary suspension as follows:

    • A verbal warning is issued on the first instance of rule breaking, and the match in question stands invalided. The committee will examine each infraction on a case-by-case basis, and reserves the discretionary right to decide on declaring the match forfeited in favour of the affected party, or to hold a rematch under observation.
    • Repeated instances of game/match rule-breaking by the same individual in successive matches or challenges may invalidate their participation for the current week, and count towards disruptive behaviour, thus meriting a temporary strike in accordance with the Conduct Penalties described below.

    CONDUCT PENALTIES: Accorded for breaking the aforementioned guidelines of expected conduct. Strikes accorded for minor transgressions persist for the duration of the week; those accorded for major transgressions persist for the remainder of the event as follows:

    • Consideration for a strike may be based on a motion by any person or by the suo moto observation of a staff or committee member.
    • A strike may be awarded collectively by the committee in consultation with the committee representative and leader of the nation(s) of the member(s) under scrutiny.
    • The first strike towards the transgression of any guideline is accompanied by a verbal warning in DMs and a request to cease and desist from the cause of such transgression. Such a strike is temporary and will expire at the conclusion of one calendar week.
    • Repeating the same offense will extend this period to two calendar weeks from the time of recurrence; Repeating it yet another time will convert this strike into a permanent one, even if the strike first awarded on the given grounds has expired.
    • Accruing two strikes at any given time (be they permanent or temporary) will result in a mute on the Nations3 General Discord server until such time as the member in question reverts to holding a singular strike or until one calendar week from the date of second strike has expired, whichever is earlier.
    • Accruing three strikes at any given time (be they permanent or temporary) will result in the member being suspended from participation in the challenge of the given week, or of the upcoming week if their match in the current week has already been concluded. They will be barred from participation even if any of their strikes subsequently expires during the course of the suspension, in addition to being muted from the Nations3 General Discord server for the given duration. This strike is accompanied by a strict, non-negotiable warning.
    • Perpetrating a further transgression of any sort, be it a repetition of an earlier offense or the performance of a new one, whilst already in possession of three strikes (whether permanent or temporary) will earn the offender a permanent suspension from the remainder of the course of the PokéNations event.
    • A member once suspended permanently will not be readmitted under any circumstance. Further disruption by or on behalf of such persons may be referred to the Reborn Community moderators for suitable action.

    NOTE ON CURRENT STRIKES: Those members who possess a singular strike as of this update shall have their strike be treated as temporary, which will be due to expire in one week's time by Friday, July the 13th. Members with two strikes will likewise revert to one (permanent) strike by the end of this period. Note that the quality of strikes remain unchanged, and any new strikes earned from this day forward will remain stacked with the existing strikes in terms of the consequent penalties they earn.

    NOTE ON STAFF STRIKES: Staff and Committee members are not exempt from these rules and will also be treated accordingly if they act to be accorded any of the aforementioned strikes, or if, in the opinion of a majority of the remainder of the committee, the offending staff or committee member has acted ultra vires their duties or in detriment to the spirit of the PokéNations 3 event.

    PokéNations 3

    WEEK 1: BL WARS

    Let the BL-oodbath begin, what?

    Welcome to the first week of the third season of this wonderful, chaotic, absolutely disgusting series that we all know and love!

    That said, enough chitchat and on with the show:

    RULES

    BL Wars is quite a straightforward challenge: every matchup will play using Pokémon from a particular competitive tier (as per the Smogon official tiering system), plus those from the BL (Bordeline) Tier immediately above it. For those not aware, the Borderline tiers contain Pokémon deemed too powerful for a given tier, but which do not garner sufficient usage to be listed in the tier beyond it; essentially, Borderline contains the banlist for each tier. But in this challenge, all such Pokemon are allowed in conjunction with those in the tier proper (as well as all Pokémon in lower tiers, which are admissible by default.)

    The tiers to be played are as follows:

    • UUBL1: All Pokémon in the UnderUsed + Bordeline-1 tiers, as well as any from lower tiers
    • RUBL2: All Pokémon in the RarelyUsed + Bordeline-2 tiers, as well as any from lower tiers
    • NUBL3: All Pokémon in the NeverUsed + Bordeline-3 tiers, as well as any from lower tiers

    Standard Smogon clauses apply. In addition, the following general restrictions shall be applicable:

    • Z-moves are not allowed this week.
    • The move Aurora Veil is banned.
    • Evasion-boosting items, abilities, moves and strategies are banned.
    • Tier-Specific bans as follows:
      • NUBL3: Malamar and Exploud are banned.
      • RUBL2: All Mega evolutions are banned.
      • UUBL1: Thundurus, Thundurus-Therian and Azumarill are banned.

  5. Each year, the pool grows larger and the list grows shorter; it has reached a point where I've largely been absent for the most part, and know nobody new. But that only heightens my appreciation for those few whom I do know and like.  My appreciation for Reborn (the game, the creators and the community) notwithstanding, these days I spend more time individually or in small groups with the people I have known through Reborn, than amidst the community itself. But while I may have 'moved on' from here in most senses of the term, I feel that i owe the community some consideration for being the institution through which I met these friends of mine, and that consideration merits upholding this tradition of a yearly commemoration. Shoutouts to Bibs, Arkhi, Azery and now Hycrox, all such friends of mine, for keeping this alive.

    I never could manage sentimental speeches, nor do I think they're necessary given how well I know everyone on this list, and how well they know the regard I have for them. Many people on this list have been the best of friends for so long I can't even remember when and how we first met; others I have gotten to know more recently but have quickly become good friends too. Talking with each other frequently, and in many cases on an almost daily basis, has become a fact of life; familiarity and trust of that kind is invaluable.

    Given that I find any more words to be both paltry and unneeded, enough of the heavy stuff, what? I'll contend myself with a mention and a joke apiece:

    (thanks, Hycrox, for forcing me to strikethrough everything)

    Spoiler

    @Bazaro chandelure is trash and so are you

    @Arkhi give my regards to succ-chan

    @Morshu nice day

    @Personthing what can I say that your phone hasn't

    @Plok sos forry

    @ZEL may pigeons poop on your shoulder

    @Spineblade thank you for the bibface, we all celebrate your gift

    @Ice Cream Sand Witch impossible to be punappreciative

    Lastly, since it's inevitable that I'd have inadvertently omitted a mention to someone or the other, let me say that you're all appreciated and that I'm grateful to have gotten to know you.

  6. Played it on PC; it's a great game in design, story, narration, art as well as music. There's a lot to do and many hidden secrets to unearth; it occupied me for a full 80 hours on my first run, including all the free DLC content. There's yet another expansion coming up, so be sure to await it.

    ^Never heard of pele's hair? It's actually a really neat and creative take if somewhat obscure. I kind of like it if only because I honestly dislike vanilla dugtrio and find it one of the most creatively defunct pokemon in existence.  Plus it's a steel type that's not quite the typical mold , a hipster steel pokemon at its finest.

    oh boy, here we go

    I agree that Pele's Hair is a neat concept, but making Alolan Duggy a Steel type is a terribly poor execution of it. Especially since its pokedex entries say it's an adaptation to survive better in volcanic regions. Guess what: Steel only makes it weaker to Ground and Fire, two types most associated with volcanoes, and two types regular Duggy is not weak to.  Aesthetically, it is absolutely hideously executed.

    And from a function perspective, it's asinine: Alolan Duggy loses Arena Trap, just about the only niche duggy had going for it, and instead gains a Gooey clone which is near-useless on a creature with paper-thin bulk. It's also one of the worst Steel type additions in general, making even less sense and use than Alolan Sandslash or Lucario. And it's by no means a unique concept, since we already have a Ground/Steel mole pokemon (and one which is loads better designed, makes much more sense and is far more useful) in the form of Excadrill.

    Alolan Duggy couldve been much better if it was a Rock type. Rock/Ground is a fantastic offensive type, and we sorely need a fast, offensive representative that can play to the type's strengths, instead of the parade of slow, lumbering, exploitable pokemon that we currently have of that type combination. Dugtrio would enjoy STAB Stone Edge and the added situational benefits, plus the combo makes much more sense as a volcanic adaptation. Pele's hair, being a form of volcanic glass, resonates much better with the more mineral-like Rock typing than a Steel typing.

    Also imagine how sick Dugtrio wouldve looked with hair like dreadlocks or braids made of rocks, instead of a dumb blonde wig set. Alolan Duggy was just a massive failure overall.

  9. Oh looky here, has Old Man Viri started to make megamon sketches again?

    giraf.jpg

    Mega Girafarig

    Type: Normal/Psychic (unchanged)

    Ability: Trace
    HP: 70
    Atk: 80 -> 90 (+10)
    Def: 65 -> 80 (+15)
    SpA: 90 -> 130 (+40)
    SpD: 65 -> 100 (+35)
    Spe: 85 -> 85 (+0)

    BST: 455 -> 555 (+100)

    New Moves: Aura Sphere (not that Girafarig needs much in the way of movepool expansions, given that it has a fairly wide range of tools already, courtesy the Normal type syndrome; nevertheless, Aura Sphere is thematic and adds some nice coverage)

    This was originally made as an evolution for Girafarig, but it works as a mega concept as well. It draws from the Okapi in terms of design choice.

    Megafarig will never see the light of OU, perhaps not even too much in UU, but given that it now has some respectable stats (with enough bulk to actually use Wish+CM), it can better utilize its good movepool and deal out some good damage, especially given that it has access to Nasty Plot to instantly double its SpAtk. Base 85 speed is a good enough tier for a moderately bulky set up mon, especially given its access to Agility as well. But Girafarig's biggest niche is probably as a user of Baton Pass, and with these much-needed stat boosts, it can be more effective at that role. Trace is a fun ability that can work out positively in this regard; copying Water Absorb or Flash Fire, for example, can make setting up or switching in on certain common Pokemon an easier task.

    Girafarig is such a cute mon, it deserves to get a proper evolution, honestly.
