Kanji's character arc is after done very tastefully, considering that at the end, he reaches the conclusion that his "unmanly" sides are an important part of him, and he should be proud of them. Yosuke's comments, while crass, are realistic, in that he behaves like most guys his age would behave...

... And if you find a crossdressing pageant to be homophobic, you really have reached a witch hunt level of obsession. Crossdressing for the sake of having fun is something people do, you know, I myself have done it in the past. There is no homophobia involved, it's just one of the many things you do to have fun.
