why are all indie bands the same

Well, music genres will sound like "the same thing over and over again" if you don't like the genre. So, there's that.

its not that... they just sound so generic

Not sure if Alt. Rock is your thing, but listen to Adore by Dear Agony. They're an indie band, but I found that song to be pretty good. The discordant sound they use is one you don't hear often either.
