Krickitune is good if you want a good crutch for the early game. Personally I like Budew because it resists most of Julia's attacks and can poison most of her team.

What are the benefits of each one?

 

This is probably going to be incomplete, but I'll do my best

-Upgrading the slums gives you the GUM key, which allows you into the GUM room in the WTC. This lets you get Goomy and I believe the TM Taunt. You also get some rare berries.

-Upgrading the railway gets you Steelixite, Assault Vest, and Togepi trade.

-Upgrading Azurine Island gives you *I think* Bulbasaur and Chimchar. This is the only one I haven't done, so I'm not sure what else it could have.
