They were relatively unimportant in the political scene, but made a tidy profit by acting as middlemen in the lucrative trade of pegusi from the mountains down to the Royal Army and the various noble houses. As a natural consequence of the trade, the de Verays also held a sizable stable of the winged horses for their own use. As a result of his birthright, Henry grew up in luxury, rarely wanting for anything. As a child, he was educated in the traditional way of noble sons, but as he grew older increasingly engaged in what the overworked and overtaxed peasants considered to be the "idle luxuries". Along with a like-minded cohort of fellow noble sons, he hunted and explored the mountains and forests from the back of his choice pegasus. Eventually, his family intended him to receive a post as an officer in the army, but for now tolerated his hobbies. But even as he wiled away his time, the tide of revolution was rising. Just days before Henry reached adulthood, the old system broke for good and the first rioters began to gather in the streets of Pureteé. As the rioters took control of the streets and began to look more and more like a revolutionary army, the crown called the nobility to arms in its defense. Henry answered the call, pegasus in tow, even as peasant militias burned his family estate. He may as well have not bothered. The noble army was poorly led and poorly equipped, and most of its troops would have much rather been fighting for the revolutionaries. Amazingly, Henry survived the ordeal, and fled the dying royalist army for the relative safety of the northeastern mountains with his prized pegasus, Mistral. It was Mistral that would save Henry's life. With the pegasus, he was able to outrun and outclimb the revolutionary forces that searched for fleeing royalists. He eventually slipped over the border to Leocor, and slowly made his way to the new city where many of the exiled monarchists had gathered-Cape Capital. After establishing himself in the city, he eked out a living in the city as a guard for a Nobilisse duke that had fled to the city in the aftermath of the revolution. In theory, Henry and his fellows were to guard the man from any assassination attempts by revolutionaries, but in practice they were glorified hired muscle in the endless petty disputes that the Duke had with his fellows. The noble son had been reduced to a common mercenary. Eventually, he quit the employ of the exile duke and prepared to leave the city, offering himself as a free soldier. He was tired of living amongst the poverty and squalor that was the hallmark of Cape Capital, and the confined spaces were beginning to wear on Mistrial's health. He didn't particularly care where he went or who employed him, so long as it was not Cape Capital or any of its inhabitants.
