I think you don't get experience from pokemon that die to hazards because they never technically got on the field. For example, on showdown (which can use sm/usum mechanics when you're on a gen 7 tier), abilities that apply when a pokemon gets on the field (mold breaker, intimidate, etc) activate after hazards, and will not activate if they die to hazards, meaning the pokemon never got on the field. It could also be that if the opponent switches, the pokemon that's in will not get exp for knocking that specific pokemon out if you switched it out against the pokemon coming in unless it gets onto the field with the first pokemon again, so if they never get onto the field, because of hazards you won't get the exp. I'm pretty sure your issue comes from both things.
