It could become a novella; I just have to stay motivated to writing more about this and depicting the full story here. There’s more to this specific story that’s been rattling around in my head, and I do want it to see paper (or Word document) relatively soon.
Noted on all your critiques, and I agree with a great deal of them. “That” is a word which I constantly overuse unconsciously, and am trying to get better with. I do have a fix for it coming though
Donan is honestly just that wise old guy who tries to crack as many jokes as he can at the expense of the “whippersnappers”. I’ve tried to catch that in his personality, but who knows if it was successful. I’ve got a fix for that one sentence you pointed out, and I’ll catch that when I get home later (or have a moment at school)
As for the first Lesmes sentence you pointed out, the reasons I took that route are 1) text shrieks always look so bizarre to me and 2) to me, it set up a situation that frazzled her more and made her statement, in my opinion, much more emphatic than normal. However, I can see your point of view, and will do what I can to revise that bit
I do kind of like the name Soul Keepers, I’m just not sure how well it will fit with the rest of the current iteration of this story that’s in my head. I’ll make that the temp title, and as it keeps going (if you keep reading), perhaps you could continue to suggest title ideas as everything progresses? I’ll be doing the same

Silence in the evening was customary for the rather large village of Erimead, for all the townsfolk had retired to their homes to rest for the next day’s work. Yet no one fled from their houses at the sound of ghastly, pain-filled feminine shrieks that emanated from a small, dimly lit wooden cabin that sat near the edge of the community. Nor did anyone rush forth to help at the tense, male shouts that seemed to follow almost immediately after.
In the quaint home, a gruff-looking man stared on in agony at the door that had just been firmly closed behind him as he was unceremoniously removed from the room. Growling, he went to turn the doorknob, only to find that it had been locked. “Damnit Donan! Open this blasted door at once! I should be in there with my wife!” he roared, blue eyes flaring with rage and worry. He ran a hand through his light brown hair in agitation before bashing it against the wall. “Donan, I should be with her right now! I’m her husband, damn you!”
On the other side of the door, a skinny, shriveled old man rolled his eyes at the door. “Chetza,” the man wheezed with barely concealed amusement, “you’re causing this poor girl more angst than the actual process is. Go away and let her be in peace.” In response to the stream of Chetza’s cursing that greeted his latest words, Donan stated, “You may be a Blue Soul, but your intimidation tactics are useless. This situation is in the realm of a Red Soul, so let me to my job.” Rolling deep red eyes, Donan turned to the solitary bed in the room and gave a toothy grin. “Your husband is quite devoted to you, my dear Lesmes. You picked him wisely.”
From the bed, a sweaty, pale young woman’s face contorted as another spasm swept through her body. She shuddered before forcing out the words, “I’m quite the lucky woman, though sometimes…” her voice trailed off as another wail of discomfort grasped her, leaving her gasping for breath. “Sometimes,” Lesmes whispered, “he’s a little too overbearing. Thank you for making him leave!”
The wrinkles on Donan’s face grew as he was bent double with laughter at her statement. “Of course, my dear, of course. Now, what do you say to finally giving birth to this child that has your husband so worked up?” As Lesmes gave him a tense nod, he became completely serious, taking a seat at the foot of the bed. “My dear, I believe you’re fully dilated, so now you’re going to have to work. The next time you feel a contraction, I need you to push as hard as you can.”
Outside the door, Chetza paced back and forth in agitation, rushing to the door each time one of Lesmes’ shrieks pierced the night. Each time, he would begin his shouting anew, yelling at Donan to open the door so that he could be with his wife. When he wouldn’t receive an answer, Chetza would punch the wall in anger before shaking out his hand and cursing about the pain he had just caused himself. Damn that Red Soul, shoving me out of my own bedroom in my own house, the man thought angrily, storming into the kitchen to get an ice pack for his overly bruised hand. Just as he had reached his destination, the most horrifying wail yet sounded through the house. Red Soul be damned, my wife needs me! Chetza’s eyes flared blue as he charged through his house with the intention to break the door down if need be to be by Lesmes’ side.
Just as Chetza rounded the corner, the door to the bedroom opened and a very tired looking Donan stepped out, accompanied by the wailing of a newborn child. “Chetza—” he began, only to be cut off by the blazing blue eyes that met his red ones. As Chetza pushed past on his way into the room, the bald Red Soul livened up just a little, amused to no end by the fire and spirit that were trademark traits of Blue Souls. “Chetza, for the love of Vengard, calm yourself. Lesmes is alright, just a bit tired. This mood of yours will only exhaust her further. And you don’t want to upset your tiny newborn, do you?” he asked, shaking his head in exaggeration at the man as he turned around and squeezed past the staggering size of the younger man to re-enter the room. The elderly man quietly took his place against a wall, knowing that his place was only to watch for now.
Chetza had stopped in the center of the doorway, watching as two younger Red Souls worked to clear away the waste products of the birthing process and clean Lesmes and the bed of the fluids that had been expelled. As they finished changing the bed sheets, Donan gently cleared his throat and motioned for them to step away from the woman, who was propped up against pillows cradling what appeared to be a mound of blankets to her chest. When Chetza still did not move, Donan walked over and pointedly shoved him in the direction of the bed.
Lesmes looked up at her husband, exhaustion and relief fighting for dominance on her face. “Chetza,” she whispered, moving her eyes back down to the bundle in her arms, “come meet your daughter.” As smoothly as she could, the auburn-haired woman freed one of her arms to beckon her fierce husband toward her, slightly shifting her weight to accommodate the child. As the man took uncharacteristically slow, halting steps toward her, Lesmes allowed her arm to drop, brushing a stray strand of hair away from her face. Chetza took a seat at the edge of the bed and gently caressed the sweat-stained face of his wife, placing a gentle kiss on her brow. “You know, Chetza,” Lesmes whispered suddenly, “I was thinking Kisa would be a perfect name for our daughter.”
Chetza looked at the small child, her eyes closed as she gently suckled for milk. He reached out a gentle finger and stroked his daughter’s face, taking in how round and pink it was, with the soft blackish tufts of hair at the top of her head providing accent points. Bringing his eyes up to meet Lesmes’ again, he softly said, “I think Kisa is a perfect name for her too.” The Blue Soul stood and placed another kiss onto his beloved’s head before walking to the silent observer in the room. “Donan, thank you for your services today. Because of you, my wife is alright and my daughter is strong.” Chetza paused after this, struggling to find the next words he wanted to speak.
With a brilliant flash from his red eyes, Donan cut Chetza off. “There’s nothing else you need to say. Clearly you were worried about Lesmes, and worry makes people do crazy things.” The bald man paused and allowed an impish grin before he continued, “You do, however, need to take care of that hand. Red Souls can tell when others are in pain, and you’re not hiding it very well.” Allowing Chetza to nod and mutter an affirmative to his words, Donan became serious once more, staring at both new parents with equal intensity. “As you both know,” he spoke gravely, the levity and wonder of new life having left his face, “before I leave, I must determine what type of Soul the child has, so that you can begin to plan for her future within our community.”
Lesmes nodded wearily, and detached Kisa from her, wincing as the child began to cry in want of more milk. “Of course,” she murmured, “you may do the rest of your duty.” As Chetza returned to her side, the woman, still pale from the night’s events, whispered, “My only hope is that she isn’t a Blue Soul. I don’t think I could bear it if my Kisa had to defend our community or go off to battle like Chetza does. Being a Red Soul or a Green Soul would keep her safe here. There’s no danger in healing or gathering food, yet both are still honored positions, just as Blue Souls are.”
Donan took Kisa from Lesmes’ outstretched, quivering arms and placed the child softly onto the ground. He then unwrapped her and placed the blanket to the side, examining all pieces of the child’s skin for blemishes or other marks. Calling up to the nervous parents, he proclaimed, “She’s definitely of a higher Soul class.” Then, he cautiously opened the child’s eyes to see the color hidden underneath the lids. With a gasp, Donan flung his hands away from Kisa rapidly, which did not go unnoticed by Chetza or Lesmes.
As the now flustered Red Soul hurriedly wrapped the child back into a blanket again, Chetza was the first to find his voice. “Donan, what did you see?” he demanded, placing an arm around Lesmes in a fruitless attempt to calm the rising nerves that were becoming visible in her body and on her face.
Placing Kisa back into her mother’s arms, Donan stood with his head bowed. “Your daughter…” he trailed off, searching for the correct words to tell the anxious parents, “she’s a Silver Soul.” Taking a moment to pause, wise red eyes scanned the looks of anxiety, curiosity, and horror that had appeared on Chetza and Lesmes’ faces. Donan rubbed his bald head thoughtfully before carefully choosing his next words. “I know you both are familiar with the history of Silver Souls within Erimead,” he wheezed gently, recoiling at the sobs that had begun to escape Lesmes, while tears cascaded down her face with the thoughts of what could hold for her precious Kisa.
“Please, honored Red Soul, help us to spare our precious daughter from this fate that has been set for her. You are the wisest in our village, with a knowledge of the Souls that is second to none. Please, help us to find a way to mask Kisa’s Soul from those others, so that she may have a life in peace with her family. Please…” Chetza’s voice cracked, all of his night’s irritations long forgotten as the strain of new knowledge coupled with the stress and angst that had fallen upon his shoulders all evening.
Silence fell as Donan pondered the request that Chetza had plead for. Massaging his bald scalp, ensuring to scratch one of the small liver spots that appeared there, he gazed at the baby, who had begun to suckle for food once more. “There is a way,” he began slowly, analyzing all his life’s teachings to ensure that none of the information he was about to give was incorrect. “It will not last forever, and as her Soul grows stronger, others will be able to sense that she is not what she appears to be.” Donan allowed his eyes to drop as he paced the length of the room, unsure if it would be wise to continue. It was only the faintest spark of hope that had sprung to life within Lesmes’ eyes that convinced him to speak the rest. “Red Souls have the ability to capture the essence of another Soul and trap it within lenses that cover the eyes.”
“Do it.” Chetza ordered, his blue eyes seemingly more intense than they had been all night, having taken on a dark, stormy color. “Please help our Kisa,” he added as an afterthought, deciding that his normal Blue Soul ways would not curry him any favor in this scenario.
Lesmes looked up, her tear-and-sweat-streaked face coupling with her matted auburn hair to create a truly pitiful sight. “Please,” she whispered hoarsely. “Please help Kisa to live an ordinary life for as long as possible. It’s unfair for a newborn to deal with the consequences of the past.”
A raspy sigh was heard. “Very well. You must help this child understand her place in the world as soon as you believe she can carry the weight of this burden. If she allows anyone to know the true nature of her Soul, we’d all be tried for treason, while Kisa’s fate would be sealed from the words she spoke.” Donan paused, watching the new parents for their complete comprehension of his statements. “You’ll need to limit the people who can visit her, as the lenses shouldn’t be worn at such a young age,” he warned, hating the secrecy that he had chosen to involve himself in already. All was forgotten though, at a small, genuine smile from Lesmes.
“Thank you, father. We will keep our end of this bargain to protect Kisa from the people of Erimead.”
Author's Note
So, while being dragged through an Old Navy store, I thought of hearts of gold and souls of silver, and really became fixated on the soul because, to me, it sounded like a nobility rank. As I kept pondering this idea, a village of people whose souls are shown in their eyes and quite clearly depicted their roles within the community came to me. I continued developing the idea in my head throughout the day and eventually felt an overwhelming need to write it down and receive feedback on it.
This was not the first scene that popped into my head, yet I felt that this would be a good starting place-- a prologue to the upcoming action, so to speak. I am aware that I've introduced many ideas and concepts that have not been fully fleshed out or explained, but don't fret over that. I'll provide explanations for everything in the upcoming sections to this, hoping that I stay motivated and interested in writing this.
I couldn't think of a title for this, although I do have a definite outline of what I want to happen throughout the course of the story. If anyone has a title suggestion, please feel free to post it below along with any and all feedback.

So, in the lovely spoiler, I've got an image of the USUM promotional poster, and everyone's flipping out over the mysterious people. But there are a set of eyes imposed on the image, and they appear to be the same eyes on the case art. Possible third Necrozma form of pure light/energy?

Speculation is afoot in this post. You have been warned.
So, we all know that two new UBs have been introduced, which is fairly awesome because Pokémon have never been introduced mid-generation before.
If we look at the trends that Pokémon has set forth since the franchise started, the national dex has always left off on a mythical/ event Pokémon, not on a regular obtainable Pokémon. So, it appears to be all but guaranteed that for USUM we'll see at least 3 new Pokémon.
In the early rumors about Pokémon Stars, it was said that this game would function as a third version, add ~20 new Pokémon to the dex, and that it would be on the Switch. Given the information set forth, USUM, while being on the 3DS, appear to be functioning as third versions, due to some of the gameplay footage that was recently shown. Could it be that the system is the only thing that the rumors got wrong, and we'll see approximately 20 new Pokémon in this game?
Personally, I would like to see more Pokémon in addition to the new UBs. Maybe a fifth Tapu as a way to round out the national dex this time around (a leader Tapu of sorts, one that leads the others), as the Strange Souvenir is supposed to represent one of the Alolan guardian deities, yet doesn't look like Koko, Lele, Bulu, or Fini. Thoughts are welcome

Also lol at people comparing Alolan forms to megas. Look at Beedrill and Ratticate. Both were gen 1 early game trash. One got an Alolan form. The other a mega. Guess which one's still trash.
No Eagle, it hasn't been confirmed if these are third versions or sequels yet

While I cannot speak for others, I'm not going to be disappointed. This is no different than GameFreak has done in the past, and I've played since gen 1 first came out. Regardless of what the game introduces (or does not), I'll still play and enjoy it

First piece of official news on these games, and it's Dusk form Lycanroc. I like the form better that Midnight (I'm in the minority here) and about as much as Midday (one of my favorite gen 7 designs). Was this necessary? Not in the least. Will I get one in the game? Probably, yes.

So, who are you?: I call myself Rosesong, a name based on my all time favorite book series, Warriors by Erin Hunter. You can shorten it to just Rose, or even make it LidaRose (from the Music Man). I don't often appear here anymore, but that's what happens when you're a 23 year old middle school band teacher gearing up for a second year in teaching! I'm an avid musician, capable of playing almost any instrument you can name with varying levels of proficiency. The instruments that I'm most comfortable on are clarinet, which I've played for ~13 years, and bass clarinet for ~11 years (I've earned many accolades on this instrument).Anything you're responsible for? I used to be a server mod here awhile back, but had to retire due to the start of my career. I was also responsible for massive shipping fests back in 2014, when I had ~15-20 ships that people made up about me and others in the community.
If you had to choose one of your posts as your way to introduce yourself, which would it be? Yikes. I never exactly wrote an intro post (at least, not that I can remember). I encourage anyone curious about me to just pop up in my PMs and ask me questions though!
What can I talk to you about? Anything at all! I'm more than comfortable just lending an ear and listening to what's going on. I also don't mind giving advice or playing the devil's advocate if needed. I wasn't aware of that; guess I need to go back and catch that tidbit in SM.
It could also lend credence to the idea that maybe a new style of gym could be developed, one where Totem Pokémon play a larger role in the running of the gym/a challenge to beat before you get to face the gym leader.
I would prefer that gyms aren't added, as that would cause Alola to lose some of its uniqueness and appeal as being a fresh take on Pokémon. But at the same time, gyms would be a reasonable step to take, given that we just established a League in SM

Be warned: the following post is complete speculation and a break down of even the smallest hints in the new USUM mini trailer. This is solely observation and could be considered ramblings of the insane.
So, I'm really excited about USUM. I enjoyed the Alola region, and it was one of the catalysts that got me majorly into Pokemon again. After having watched the trailer often enough, I believe that the games are sequels due to a number of reasons.
Reason 1: The Player
The player has undergone a fierce style change from SM to USUM. The shots we get of the protagonists in the mini-trailer show both wearing tropical style clothing, while in the original, the protagonists wore clothing that just didn't seem to fit the area, which makes sense given that the player had just relocated with their mother from Kanto. We also notice major changes with the character's appearance-- the male character sports shorter hair, while the female character has longer hair with braids. I honestly doubt these changes were made to showcase the new player customization options in USUM. Could these be different characters all together-- perhaps a sibling that has come to live in Alola as well? I think there are enough style changes present to merit the idea that these could be new protagonists, rather than the same characters that we've already played as. (Comparison images in spoiler)
Reason 2: The Player's Room
By now, I'm sure everyone noticed that there was a Switch in the female player's room when the camera panned out during the trailer for USUM. This differs from SM, where a Wii U is stationed by the player's TV. I believe this indicates that some time has passed in the game as opposed to it being the usual easter egg from Game Freak as to which console was popular/new at the time of release. Reason 3: The Player's House
Ok, first, I swear that not all of my evidence revolves around the player. Second, if you look at the player's house in USUM, you can see changes to the outside. The most prominent, to me, are the fresh paint scheme on the house, fence, and mailbox; the Alolan Raichu surfboard leaning against the garage; and the truck in the garage. All of these seem to indicate that the player's family has been living in this house for a little while and have both acquired things and made changes, as opposed to the beginning of SM, when the player has first moved in. Reason 4: Route 1
In our USUM mini trailer, we see a glimpse of Route 1, which is right next to the player's house, and wow what a difference. The place is colorful to the max. In SM, you can see how the flowers are just starting to bloom on Route 1, but they aren't quite there yet. In USUM, it's an explosion of color and flowers. Even our trainer on Route 1 has changed, from a young boy with a Rockruff to what appears to be a slightly older (read: teenager) person with an Alolan Meowth. (Comparison images in spoiler)
Reason 5: The Pikachu Trailer
Remember how in SM, there were construction trailers near the trial sites? Well, in the USUM trailer, we see one of these trailers, and it appears to have been converted into a Pikachu paradise type of place. This brings me back to the basis for most of my arguments here-- time would need to have passed for this to have happened. (Comparison images in spoiler)
Reason 6: Togedemaru, Mimikyu, and (mid-day)Lycanroc
These Pokemon each get their own short spotlight within the USUM mini trailer, and it's not terribly surprising-- all three of these Pokemon have received a popularity push from TPCi in terms of the TCG game (Togedemaru has received ~3 promo cards, pushing the blister packs, Mimikyu is apart of the pin collection, and mid-day Lycanroc has its own GX box). It would make sense for Game Freak to spotlight these guys in the upcoming games, and what better way to do that then make them (or in Mimikyu's case, continue to be) Totems? After the events of Sun and Moon, it's safe to say that Acerola at least would need replacing as a trial captain, not to mention Hala and Olivia would need to be replaced as Kahunas. Looking at each Pokemon's cameo, it seems as though each Pokemon is battle ready, and you can even see a bit about where each Pokemon is battling.
Togedemaru seems to be battling in a dark building. We know that Sophocles has a Togedemaru, and his trial took place in the Hokulani Observatory. Could Togedemaru replace Vikavolt?
Mimikyu was an original Totem, so it wouldn't be that surprising that it continues to be, given the amount of popularity it has. However, the background indicates that the Mimikyu we're seeing is in a forest, as opposed to the Abandoned Supermarket that its original trial took place in.
Lycanroc was seen as Olivia's ace in SM. Should these games indeed be sequels, is it possible that she's stepped down from the Elite Four and as a Kahuna? Lycanroc could certainly make a fearsome Totem to have to conquer.
Now, there is another way to look at this. If not Totems, these Pokemon could possibly receive an exclusive Z move. I personally find this highly unlikely, as Mimikyu has a unique ability and mid-day Lycanroc has a unique move. Plus, out of the Pokemon that we know have exclusive Z moves, these three just don't have that kind of star power to warrant the special treatment, regardless of an increased popularity from the rest of the Gen VII roster. Reason 7: Translation
When SM came out, we were told that Rowlet, Litten, and Popplio shared some secret with Rockruff, which many thought was a split evolution line after the reveal of Lycanroc. However, it turned out that this was just a mistranslation. During the direct, Junichi Masuda's translator said that USUM offer an alternate story within the world of Sun and Moon. It could be (and anyone that speaks/understands Japanese can correct me) that the word alternative is incorrect within the translation, and that it's merely another story within the world of Sun and Moon, which makes a sequel a perfectly logical thing to have.
Reason 8: Two Versions
Last reason. In the past, whenever Game Freak has wanted to provide an alternate storyline, or enhance it, they would give a single third version that handled the additional material brought in to supplement the original story. But when they wanted to give a new story within the same world, we received B2W2, which gave us a brand new story in the same world, which is what USUM is claiming to do.
Is it plausible? I think so. Is it likely? Probably not. However, I will give kudos to TPCi, Game Freak, and Nintendo for keeping everything so closely underwraps; I think it's safe to say that no one saw this coming. Anyway, I can't wait to hear what everyone thinks about this!
