[E17 sidequest spoiler] tower staircase jumping

This is inside Mirage Tower:

 

The upper, bigger staircase leads to I think two(?) more of the tower's puzzle and eventually to the lower, smaller staircase which leads to the fake outside area.

I was able to jump down from the bigger staircase down onto the smaller one by pressing up/down at their intersection, thereby skipping those two puzzles. Seems to be a one-way deal, since I couldn't get back up that way.
