Unburden ability not working/gems?

My starter pokemon, Grovyle, has the ability unburden. From what I have seen so far it worked once when it was a treecko with a normal gem and stopped working altogether with other items.

Does the ability only work with gems? Since it doesn't seem to work with any berries. If the ability is bugged then i can just use an ability capsule.

The ability only works if the item is lost, means if you use something like gem you said, it would be used/lost if you use the type attack and the unburden will be activated.

Same with berries when you are on half health. Or you getting knock off too(i think).

It do works on berries like healing berries or status berries if you get the status that could be recovered.

It also works with Herbs like the Power/White herb once it is activated, as well as with the focus sash iirc, I'm treaining a Hawlucha at the moment so I know the ability work just as it should.

Or you getting knock off too(i think).

Getting Knock Off activates Unburden, as do Fling and getting Bug Bite (if your Pokémon's holding a Berry).

Unburden activates once the held item is consumed, no matter what the item is- I've used Sitrus Berries with Unburden on a Hawlucha before and it worked just fine.

Make sure the held item can be consumed, since (most) berries don't activate unless you're under 50% HP.
