Corud 0
Hi! I noticed that the solution to the 4th chess puzzle in Vanhanen Castle is incorrect. We are to checkmate the black king, and I "did" so like this: But it's not checkmate! For the sake of clarity, I have loaded the position in a chess GUI: It now becomes obvious that the bishop on h5 can delay checkmate with one move by going to g6 (red dotted arrow). This is of course a minor issue, but it should be corrected nevertheless. Keep up the fantastic work! It's by far the best fangame I've ever played! (Apologies in advance if I have misinterpreted anything with respect to the puzzle)
BIGJRA 133
I'm 99% sure you're correct, but then if that was the case couldn't White Bishop at C2 move to the Black Bishop at G6, thus securing the checkmate anyways?

That's correct! But given the puzzles' instruction, I believe we must checkmate the king immediately. If an incorrect solution is tried in the first three puzzles, the supervisor says something in the lines of: "But cannot the king get out of check?".
Mortally Divine 5
But its NOT a checkmate unless there is NO WAY that the opposing player can save his king. Otherwise, it is only a "check"

Otherwise, it is only a "check" Again, that's correct. The accepted "solution" is in fact a mate in 2 (ply) if it's black to move. (i.e. if it's black to move, white will be able to deliver checkmate on his/her next move)
Administrators Amethyst 2469 Posted June 12, 2015 Administrators Share Posted June 12, 2015 This is correct. It was pointed out a bit ago, but I haven't worked out an acceptable alternative yet. I may just have to drop the second pin, which isn't the end of the world, but it's still pretty lame.
