Sucker Punch and Disobedience

I was fighting Shade with my Ariados and my Sucker Punch wouldn't work on half the damaging moves he'd use.
Those moves would include
-Discharge
-Shadow Ball (worked on certain pokes)
-Gyro Ball
-Flame Burst
-Shadow Punch

Secondly, one of my pokes was over-leveled and sometimes when it would disobey, the text sequence would go as follow:
-"X ignored orders"
-"X used Psychock"
-"But there was no target"
My guess is that it's trying to attack the enemy's partner but since there are none, it misses but still displays the text.
