The first time I saw garbage people taking trash, I thought they were stealing it.

I thought astronauts were a different species. I thought inside the suit was complete blackness, and that they collected things people threw in space. I guess I also thought people threw things into space.

Non-native English speaker time: I used to think that stroking meant strangling.. when I read a sentence "I want to stroke your body" I was literally thinking who the hell wants/tries to strangle someone's body.
