@Monochrome The type chart isn't THAT hard to learn. I started in Gen IV and learned it just fine on my own, and there's only been one new type added since then. Most of them are common sense, and the difficulty is so low that even if you don't know the type...

chart by hand, you can probably push through the Big Bosses with x1 effectiveness. The not so obvious ones (like you mentioned) can be learned through trial & discovery, that's what the regular trainer battles are for.
