Can someone ELI5 Cancel Culture to me?

Can someone ELI5 Cancel Culture to me?
-
Can try!
Okay, so. Basically, to "cancel" someone in the discourse sense of the word basically means to boycott them. Essentially, it's like this: famous person does a bad thing, people point out bad thing to others (often referred to as "callout", i.e. as a "callout post" that compiles information on the incident(s), ideally with sources/proof), and ask others to stop supporting famous person because of bad thing. As more people pick up news about it, social media spreads it, and more and more people pull their support from the person to show that they are displeased w the shitty thing.
Sometimes cancelling is meant as a tool to get the person to re-evaluate their actions or views - "hey, this thing you did was awful, please apologize and consider what you did, or I won't support you any more". Other times cancelling is meant to be final - "jfc this person abused their children, no way I'll ever give them money again and neither should you".
Originally, "cancel culture" was a term that people used to criticize a rise in behavior where people started making callouts over far-fetched things, like going years through someone's social media to point out a minor ploblematic thing the did a long time ago (think 'said something offensive and has since expressed different views', do NOT think 'murdered someone in cold blood').
The issue was that with how accessible everyone's past has become through digitalization, it was easier to find out about past mistakes than ever, and people rightfully pointed out that people deserve to have some room for error before you try to outright destroy their base of support.
However, in recent years the term has become a little... contested, because it got picked up more and more by people who applied it to cases where "cancelling" the person was wholly justified.
I think part of the blame simply lies in the structure of the internet: it's so easy to spread news now, and there's so many people that do crappy things, you certainly FEEL like every day there's a new scandal happening. And that gets tiring, processing this much information is tiring. So it's easy to think "ugh, what happened NOW".
So you've got a climate in which a lot of people are already ready to say "man, stop it with the callouts, you're going overboard". Now add to that that there's a tendency for fans of famous personalities to be willing to defend them no matter what, for various reasons. And now add to THAT that there's actual bigots out there who find it very much convenient to cast themselves as the victims of "cancel culture" and censorship. And voila! You've got the recipe for what's going on now:
People whining about "cancel culture" whenever someone gets called out for shitty behavior, even if that shitty behavior is actually something very serious.
So what I was trying to get at here:
- Cancel Culture by itself refers to criticizing a perceived over-reaction to people making mistakes, basically disproportionate retribution
- However, when someone complains about cancel culture, it's worth looking into why that particular person is complaining.

I did it! I finally finished my Crimson Flower route.
Yes so spoilers, I wed Edelgard. It was bound to happen.
One thing I wished for this game was for more cutscenes, but I can ignore that.
Also I am quite shooked on how my other students ended up being together but who am I to question it I’m happy for them!
This is one of the most craziest and emotionally driven games I had played and I cannot wait to play the other ones. Going for Blue Lions next playthrough
Now it’s time to take off the 3h cartridge for the time being...
IT’S TIIIMMEEE

Luna is an adult, though. She's at least 18, Ame said she might actually even be a little older - though she also said that Luna is younger than Taka, who is 22.

A thought occurred. Wouldn’t Meteor prioritise a pulse machine for Malamar? The monster who possesses one of the strongest hypnotic powers and could easily bend people’s will better then Hypno. I understand the objective behind pulse hypno is simply the sleep spell for agate city. And I guess controlling a pulse-malalmar would be difficult.
‘But think of the devastation behind the idea of pulse-malamar.
Terra would totally approve -
[SwSh spoilers ahead... also a really bad joke. Like, legitimately awful.]
Slather me with your high-calorie cream, baby.

Our cat is annoying
Sighs
Keeps jumping up on me, he is almost 25lbs so it hurts and he digs in with claws don't know how to stop him though
-
Ah yeah, finding the right toy for your cat can be a hassle. A lot of cats love pointers and the rods, but of course there's tons of other options to explore. (I can make Pepp happy just by wiggling a belt like a snake, zzz).
If he's a rather young cat then he may also just Be Like That for a bit, they all have that age where they are full of energy especially if they're intact.
But in any case, if he is jumping you and clawing at you you'll be wanting to positively redirect that energy elsewhere. If he shreds toys a lot, it at least sounds like he has the motivation If you can get him into a routine he might even get used to waiting for his designated playtime the same way he'd wait for food.
Alternatively he might have to be kept out of the room until a specific time of the day, though this is only really a useful option if his jumping is because he wants to sleep on you/the bed, and not for attention.

Whelp the Adpocalypse is back for YouTubers all because a gay man's feefees were hurt. Well this is going to be a long year.
-
regardless of whether or not the situation escalated too far in the end... you can give people "a bit of heat" without dragging their sexual orientation into it, it's not a difficult concept
like, just so this is clear, if someone's immediate thought about "how can i make fun of this person" is to target their sexuality that's gross and out of line. and not rarely a pretty good indicator that there's more where it came from.
allowing homophobia gets more than just our feelings hurt in the long run, and a "who cares" approach only adds to the problem.
that said, it's whatever the fuck with youtubers, anyway. they'll just post a half-assed "apology video" where they vaguely apologize for making you feel hurt without ever reflecting on the actual wrong they did, and ppl will forget about it when next week's drama roll around

I really love that Corviknight is described as "the dashing lord of the skies".
Have you ever wanted to be swept off of your feet (literally) by a giant armored bird?

so... I, once again, have a very stupid questoin. Let's say you, by nature, are Bi, but you choose to only date people from your own gender. does that make you "chosen gay" or still just Bi?
-
It's not a stupid question tbh, and I don't think it's possible to give a definite answer to it.
If put very simply, your orientation describes who you feel attracted to - who you choose to actually date or sleep with would have no bearing on whether or not you could, technically, feel attraction to someone.
But at the same time, and that's why I think it's a good question, orientation often intertwines with identity, which is very complex and personal. There may be people for whom their attraction to a particular gender is so irrelevant that they don't even consider it a part of their identity.
To give an unfortunately prevalent example, there are women who could theoretically ID as bi/pan, but through traumatic experiences in their past feel entirely uncomfortable with dating men, and much prefer to refer to themselves as lesbians because they explicitly seek to date women.
(Now, there's something to be said about potentially addressing psychological issues one has, but that's 1) besides the point here and 2) not a stranger's business, so moving on.)
On the other hand, there's people who show a strong preference towards one gender, but do still entertain the possibility of dating people of different genders, and as such will use the bi/pan label regardless of their dating history so far.
Never forget, either, that the label you choose to identify with isn't set in stone for the rest of your life. If you were to feel that, for the current portion of your life, you would be best described as gay, then that's your party. There is no Gay Law Enforcement Team(TM) that'll barge into your kitchen at 2:46am because you suddenly decided you identify as bisexual instead.
As a matter of fact, understanding ourselves and discovering our identities is a source of confusion and struggle for many of us, and it's far from uncommon for LGBTQ+ people to switch between labels over time.
It's simply a result of living in cis- and heteronormative societies, so even those of us who weren't forced into a closet aren't guaranteed to have our shit figured out right off the bat.
I find it interesting to note, actually, that there's a significant subset of gay people who used to ID as bi/pan, before realizing that they were just still subconsciously influenced by heteronormativity - their perceived attraction to the other gender being a result of their upbringing and environment. But no, that is not an excuse to tell bisexual people that our orientation is 'just a phase', and if you do, the Gay Law Enforcement Team WILL barge into your kitchen at 2:46am to lecture you sternly.So... are you bi or gay? What do you think?
