  3. We're looking for another Juror for WitchCourt! Please respond in this thread if you'd like to be a Juror. (The main requirements only are that you're not in the current player list and that you're willing to read everything that has transpired and will transpire)

  4. Reborn Mafia Club has used a cummulative percentage-based system for both Seasons 1 and 2 to establish a semi-competitive leaderboard for its players. However, observing this system, it has been deemed outdated and somewhat imperfect in different aspects. With this, after a level of discussion and deliberation with core individuals, The [Jury] System has been developed as a means to improve the competitive aspect in playing Mafia and recognize the efforts of hardworking, skilled players.

    I. Issues with the Current Winrate System

    Spoiler

    A huge percentage of the problem with the current system lies in how it hinges largely towards luck. In some instances,  it is possible for a player to earn a good winrate because of the effort they place in to working with their teammates, but in other cases, some players obtain good winrates simply because they happened to be at the right place at the right time. In other instances, players who perform well, but fail at the end for some unfortunate reason, do not get some level of consolation for the effort they placed in to fighting for a win. This problem can be addressed by not limiting the MVP award to a single player, but by giving due to a number of people.

    Another problem with the winrates system as it is is the concept of how "percentages" are used. Percentages take into account the number of games won and the total number of games played. However, this only works completely if the number of games played is equal across the board or if there is a method to equate or level the differences in the number of games played. To address this issue, I believe that assigning points instead of having percentages is better because it puts everyone on a level field. However, one problem to this is that players may simply join a game for the sake of participation and possibly getting at least lucky enough to win without much effort. A way to counter this kind of behavior is by putting a penalty to inactivty to discourage a lack of activity from players.

    Another issue, albeit minor, is that the host isn't always the perfect judge because by nature, humans are imperfect while opinions are always subjective. The problem that lies therein is that players may not necessarily agree with the results of a certain game (such as the assignment of MVP) because they have a different opinion with valid points. One of the ways to further judgement is by having more people to present their views and talk about how the game progressed. By doing so, better judgement is created. Exactly how would this work? The different judges will assign points to specific players and this will be accumulated. This portion will be expounded in a later section.

    II. Gripes to the Most Ideal Solution

    Spoiler

    Based from the survey and from observation, players may be grouped in three camps: (1) players who continue to read the game even after dying, (2) players who continue to read the game after dying, but only pay attention to phase changes and such, and (3) players who only return once a game ends. This means that not all players show interest in how a game progresses when they die, especially if this is an early death.

    The most ideal solution to improving winrates is by having a collaboration of hosts and players in deciding the best players of the game. In this system, players and hosts alike will select the top 4 players in the game. 5 points will be given to the top player, 4 points to the 2nd, 3 points to the 3rd, and 2 points to the 4th. Players who exhibit great skill in either alignment may be given points. On top of this, those from the winning faction receives 3 points.

    The major gripes of this system is that not everyone pays attention to the game post-death or at times, even in-game. This kind of system works best in important matches like championships as there is a sense of urgency and importance guaranteed to be placed into coming up with points.

    Thus, a less ideal, but practical and good solution would be to have a collaboration between the host and some outside spectators to observe the actions of the players and select who among these players performed best.

    III. The [Jury] System

    Spoiler

    The [Jury] System is a system based on an actual Jury wherein a group of people convene and make an impartial decision. In the Mafia scene, the Jury is composed of 3 people. The Head Juror is the Host and he/she will be assisted by two Jurors who volunteer to be a part of the Jury before a game starts.

    Important Questions:

    How does one become a member of the Jury in a Mafia game?

    There are two methods possible to become a member of the Jury in a Mafia game.

    The first method is by becoming a Host or a Co-Host of the game. These individuals automatically become Jurors because they have the best grasp of the game from their perspective.

    The second method is by volunteering to become a Juror. One must show their intention to become a Juror by stating that they want to become a Juror once a game goes live. There may be one or two Jurors depending on the number of hosts.

    What does it mean to be a member of the Jury?

    Members of the Jury (volunteers) decide before the game starts on whether they want to be fully informed of inside-game information such as the players' alginment and whom they perform their respective actions on

    The members of the Jury will have a specified Discord chat, where they will discuss about the game and the players. Their main responsibility is to pay keen attention to the game, most especially on the performance of the players. Similarly, they shall discuss their findings with the others Jurors.

    At the end of the game, Jurors will each assign points to the best players in the game from their respective perspectives.

    How does the voting procedure work?

    The 3 members of the Jury (the host and the two other members; alternatively, two hosts and one member works too) will give points to the best 4 players of the game. Being a best player is not being the most valuable player in the game nor is it being the most positive contributor; instead, being the best or at least, one of the best, means that they are a player who performed exceptionally well as a Mafia player in their respective alignment.

    The members of the Jury will submit their points to a private chat that can only be seen by moderators. They shall not discuss on how many points they will be giving a certain player, although vague notions are permissible to a certain extent.

    How are points assigned?

    Each Juror will give a ranked Top Four from the game. These are the assigned number of points:

    * 5 points - Top 1 Player

    * 4 points - Top 2 Player

    * 3 points - Top 3 Player

    * 2 points - Top 4 Player

    Additionally, players may receive points based on the following:

    * 5 points for being a Juror

    * 3 points for being a member of the winning faction/s

    * 2 points for dying on Night Zero

    * 1 point for dying on Day One

    Players may also receive demerits:

    * - 2 points for failing to meet post and vote requirements for two day phases (player)

    * - 2 points for failing to show activity and interest in the game for two day phases (juror)

    The total amount of points a player garners from a game will be added to their amount of points in the Leaderboard.

    What is the basis for a Juror's decision-making process?

    Jurors have to be impartial and be devoid of biases. They must also be tactical and critical in giving points to players. Jurors will be guided by this rubric:

    50% Skill Employed (This refers to the individual skill shown by a player in terms of different aspects such as scumhunting, versatility, persuasion, developing reads, and other factors)

    30% Coordination (This refers to how they collaborate with other players, especially of their own faction, to come up with the best course of action to achieve their goal)

    20% Use of Role (This refers to how a player utilizes their role and given ability and how they employ it to benefit their own faction)

    In some instances, Jurors may place less or more value in a specific criteria based on their personal opinion. In these cases, Jurors may make their own decisions; however, they should be ready to take responsibility for it.

    If you have any inquiries and questions, feel free to ask in the thread, so that these may be addressed as soon as possible.

  5. Congratulations, Alistair! I knew from the first time I met you and after apparently checking your posts that time too  that you would be auth material. We know you can do this! Good luck! :D:D

    Thanks for the service, Njab! I haven't talked to you much, but I know you're cool and amazing from the you I've seen on Reborn Discord. Also, gotta love your being a fan of Tokyo Ghoul.

    • Thanks 1
  6. @Paul25

    Do you perhaps happen to have a hobby? If so, I'd be curious to know that.

    My hobby is reading. I love reading most of anything. I like fiction novels, manga, educational materials, and other works that may be interesting to me. It's fun to read actually and it's good to have more information from these kinds of material as literature and text reflect the society of its time.

    Usually, what do you do in your spare time?

    In my spare time, I play mafia in both Reborn Forums and Pokecommunity, read manga and books, and do some relaxing. At some points, I listen to music while I do these things, though sometimes, I listen to music when I'm studying for something.

    Which one would you prefer among these: Tea or coffee?

    I actually drink neither. I do drink iced tea, however, I don't think it's really 'tea'. I'm not a fan of the eccentricity of tea while I'm not a fan of the bitter taste of coffee.

    When and how did you came to know about this interesting Mafia games?

    I came to know about Mafia games in late May of 2017. That time I happened to be browsing on Pokecommunity and happened to notice a mysterious section called the Underground. I was curious about its description because it showed that this was a section of betrayal, deceit, and lies, so I checked it and read up on some of the games. I became interested so much so that I researched about Mafia, played a bit on an online site called Epicmafia, and hosted a game here after two days of experience. And the rest is as how you know it.

    @Venus

    What was the idea behind your username? (Divergent)

    In around September 2014 I think, I saw the movie Divergent during the Intramurals event in my school. It's a good movie portraying a dystopian society where people are sorted based on one common foundation of their personality. This society was created based on the leaders' thoughts on the reasons why violence exists. Some said it was due to ignorance while others said it was due to greed while others said deceit, fear, and aggression. Due to this, a society was created based on attacking these reasons, but in truth, it was far from perfect. That's where the conflict lies. Anyways, I liked the concept of the Divergent, who were the oddities who had a normal personality with its own flaws and weaknesses. I liked the movie's plot, so much so that I read the series when I had the time and this inspired me to use the name when I came up with a username.

    How did you discover Pokemon?

    I think the more appropriate word for my experience with Pokemon is learning of it as I saw the anime early on as a child. I was a huge fan of Pokemon and collected cards when I was a kid but only then when I was in 3rd grade that I learned of the existence of Pokemon games. In 4th grade, I started playing the older games and as I grew up, Pokemon slowly became a part of my life and being.

    What's your favorite sport?

    I'm hardly a fan of any physical sports because I have no skills to really back it up nor is my body really built for it. However, when I was in 1st grade, I was oriented to a mental sport called Scrabble. It was difficult at first, but slowly, I grew to love it due to my interest in the competitive side of it and my interest in words as a whole. It's the one sport I've consistently played from my elementary years and I still play it now even in my high school years. I've been to national competitions for Scrabble before, but I haven't really been inclined to try the international stage even though I might be capable of doing it if I actually tried.

  7. @LykosHand

    How much do you like sleep?
    I like sleep, but I'm usually unwilling to sleep a large number of hours because I'd prefer to do something productive in times like that. It's kinda like a complicated feeling with how I love sleep but am not really willing to sacrifice my time to do other more important things to me. That's kinda why I take the time to sleep when I ride on transportational vehicles or when I have nothing to do or have no access to the things I want to do.

    Have you ever taken a plane? If yes, where did you go when you took a plane for the first time?
    Yes. I've travelled by plane both overseas and domestically. I think the first time I took a plane was around when I was still a toddler, but I believe I went to a provincial area of the Philippines with my family to visit our relatives. I usually enjoy riding airplanes because it makes me feel a different sensation up there, unlike other modes of transportation.

    Do you prefer sea or mountain?
    I'm not really a big fan of either as I'm not really an outdoors person, but if I were to pick between the two, I'd pick the mountain. It's harrowing to traverse a mountain especially when you're aiming for the summit but I think it's fun overall, especially when you consider the view from above and the experience you're gonna have.

    Which is your favorite country? Have you ever been there?

    My favorite country has to be Japan. It used to be the US of A, but nowadays, I am more of a fan of Japan after reading a LOT of different manga showing the diverse and unique culture of Japan. I've not been there, but the first chance I get, I'll definitely go there. A lot of the things I love are there and it's definitely worth staying there for an unspecified amount of time in the future.

  8. @Venus

    Battle Royale, huh. The name already makes me interested.

    Anyhow...

    -> It's an amazing book/manga/film. Kinda like Danganronpa where students are forced to kill each other but you erase the justice system and add brutality

    https://www.google.com.ph/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_Royale_(film)&ved=0ahUKEwjT7YnKxbTYAhUJoZQKHdzcDHQQ5OUBCKYBMBY&usg=AOvVaw318K_J3Wf_EmMcj-MJatMj

    If you had a superpower, what would it be?

    If I had a superpower, I'd probably want the ability to create money. It feels like a nice ability to get the stuff that I want without any hitches. Of course, it's best not to tell anyone about the ability because it would only bring chaos. But if that doesn't work, I'd probably get teleportation so that I can go anyplace I want to go without any problems and with easy access.

    Do you listen to music? If so, what's your favorite song?

    Yep. I like music. I'm more of the pop enthusiast though. I like a lot of songs from different pop artists like Ed Sheeran, Shawn Mendes, Liam Payne, Taylor Swift, Niall Horan, Camila Cabelo, and other artists, but if I had to pick one song, I'd probably pick Perfect by Ed Sheeran. It's such a lovely song and it has a great message, along with the perfectly catchy beat.

    What's your favorite Pokémon?

    Hmm favorite Pokemon? That's a pretty tough one. I like a lot of different Pokemon, mostly from Steel, Water, Fairy, and Psychic types, but I guess if I had to pick one favorite Pokemon from all Pokemon existing, I'd probably pick Rotom. It's a very diverse Pokemon having lots of different characteristics and having a very unique style overall.

  9. @Seal

    Ideal vacation destination?

    My ideal vacation destination would most likely be somewhere in Japan. Preferably in either Hokkaido (I want to experience snow and skiing), Osaka (the prospect of learning culture there is nice and beautiful in and of itself), and Tokyo (the metropolis is something I'd like to explore and get to know while also trying to indulge in the culture and the modernity of it all)

    Favorite drink?

    I think my favorite drink is a good blend of chocolate shake though anything that contains majority chocolate is fine.

    Favorite extinct species?

    My favorite extinct species is probably the Pterodactyl. I don't really have much interest in the old world but I like the Pterodactyl as it's one of the few creatures which could really be free and escape from dangerous creatures in the land or the water.

    @Alistair

    I was surprised to read that you discovered mafia games in May. Judging by how you host and play these games, it felt like you had been doing this for years! And it's the same with how well you and Quinn are handling the community. I know Quinn is experienced with being an admin of various places, but what about you? Do you often find yourself managing servers, groups and stuff? Do you like it?

    Thanks. Technically Reborn is the first online community I've ever been in and it's also the only and first place online I've had the experience of managing. I have experience though of managing things rl. I used to be class president for all years in elementary, but managed to escape out of those responsibilities in junior high. I usually become the leader in intellectual related academic activities because of my determination and my organizational skills though.

    I actually love managing things that I love. Though it mighy be tiring to organize stuff, it's quite fulfilling to do so, especially when it offers something good to other people. I'm not necessarily altruistic (I don't think I am), but I feel that it's enjoyable to manage things as long as it affects people positively and I find myself enjoying the work.
