  5. Ayak, upon hearing the decision that Ailios had made, could not help but nod in agreement. 'That is a wise decision, milady Ailios. I will assign myself to scouring the city in search of whatever aid we can obtain.' It was indeed a wise decision, Ayak mused, as those of high birth were bound to respect those of their ilk, in much the same way that power has to respect power. For if a noble did not validate the position of other nobles, it would be akin to saying that they themselves were not all that they made themselves up to be. Furthermore, one could not deny the innate advantage that the fairer gender held over the other in regards to convincing another. Even in a purely innocent context, words from a lady held more sway than those of a man as a general rule. Ayak pondered for a moment as to whether he should ask the purpose of the visit to the duke, but in the end decided that it did not matter, and that Ailios along with Silef would prove adequate to the task.

Now, his thoughts turned to the task at hand. Eachann, although not among the renowned metropolises of the world, still held a certain weight by being one of the bigger cities on the continent of Eire. Hence, it warranted its own outpost from the order, staffed by an elderly couple by the name of jenkins. Although they were not inducted in the ways of the order, they still served the interests of the brotherhood, in much the same way that employees would serve the vision of their employer. It would have to do for information concerning the town, its inhabitants and current goings on, not to mention he would be able to do a bit more research concerning the local spirits of the area. He might even be able to pick some implements that would help in sieving, especially those that were too heavy and cumbersome to lug around on a expedition halfway across the world.

Speaking of which, he would have to commune with the spirits post haste. he decided that he would do so right after visiting the couple jenkins. With his satchel open in front of him, he took out his joss sticks, and began checking them for any damage they might have suffered during the course of the trip. Now that the satyr had left, it was safe to take them out, for the fumes produced by these joss sticks were a strong attractant for spirits, and it would not do for another being to fool about with these carefully prepared tools of his trade.

  7. As he listened the the exchange that occurred within the moving carriage, Ayak couldn't help but drift off on his own thoughts, seeing as he already knew most of the details that the various members of the party deigned to share, and then some. Then again, most people did not have the revelations of the spirits as well as access to the intel that other operatives of his caste nad perviously gathered in expectation of a situation such as this.

He thought back to the amount of study he had to do before he embarked upon this particular mission. Excursions so far afield were normally reserved for the elite, the cream of the crop, so it came as somewhat of a shock when he received the summons for service. It turned out the brotherhood was a bit short on hands, and his name came up as one of the backup operatives who had enough field experience to qualify, albeit his somewhat advanced age. And so it was with this in mind that he began on the mandatory 3 month research process that preceded any long distance mission. It was somewhat tedious and grueling at times, even with the brotherhood's great amount of literary resources and periodic news updates sent in by other monks from foreign lands. He eventually made it through though, as he did the previous dozen times, and embarked upon his journey with nothing but the clothes on his back and the tools of a spirit sieve.

It was thus Ayak came to Eire, armed with the knowledge of the lay of the land, current events, personages of note, locations of local outposts and most importantly, the spirit composition of the local area. This time, his mission was to stop the vile lunamancer, the one who had chiefly corrupted the balance of the elements throughout the entire continent. The lunamancer's actions did not bode well with the great spirit, and as the arms and legs of the great spirit's will, the order was bound to act, to remedy this issue. Thus, the elimination of this imbalance was his overarching goal, and he was prepared to obtain it by any means necessary, but preferably without bloodshed, for Ayak was a peaceful man at heart.

His thoughts moved on to brother Mangkuk and his little dingy pawnshop in one of Danu's innumerable alleyways. Although it was somewhat ironic that a monk be the proprietor of such a tight fisted money grabbing enterprise, one had to face the fact that it was not easy gathering information as a monk. Also, having the pawnshop as a base of operations for the brotherhood was quite a boon, not to mention that fellow brothers residing in the city for the order's various agendas did not have to beg for food to survive. It was during his first two weeks here that he learned of a covert recruiting exercise done with the intention of dealing with the lunamancer. Hence with the help of the brotherhood, he seeded news regarding a certain capable fighter who hailed from exotic lands far south, who was travelling to see the world and yet would offer his services in exchange for coin. It was with great joy that he received an invitation to join the party only a fortnight later, although he was careful to conceal his glee from the two lackeys that were sent to deliver the message.

Again, he recollected upon the fact that this was not a particularly momentous event in the eyes of the great spirit, as he was the only one to have been sent to deal with the issue. There had been incidences in the past where entire oceans threatened to engulf the world, as well as rogue spirits who could have split the world in twain if it were not for the utmost efforts of the order. Even then, if it were not for timely empowerment and intervention from the great spirits, the brotherhood could very well have failed, resulting in the final imbalance and destroying the world completely. But, Ayak had resolved to do his best, even sacrifice his own life if he had to, for he would not fail upon this mission that had been entrusted to him by the great spirit. It was with this in mind that he decided to drop his facade of being a simple traveller and reveal to them his true colors, for dishonesty and misdirection would not serve his cause in this case.

It was with such thoughts that Ayak half listened to the chatter in the rumbling carriage, but upon zix's summoning of the satyr, his attentions immediately snapped back to the situation at hand. Rousing himself from his apparent stupor, he addressed the group: 'If i may put in a word?' He paused before he continued. 'This would seem to be a good time for me to reveal in what ways i may be of service to the group. I am by birth, by profession and by heart a spirit sieve of Lamay.' He shifted his gaze over to where the caller and his spirit were seated, expecting them to grasp the denotation and connotation of the title. After all, although few knew of the existence of his order, those with frequent contact with spirits would often hear vague tales of those who could provide spirits with a physical body, allowing the performance of feats and shows of power one could only dream of. In fact, it was said that the founder of his order as well as his namesake, Ayak the first had once sieved a zeitgeist, allowing him to slow down time to a complete standstill so he could prevent the Swamp of reflection from being razed down by an invading horde of babarians, among other seemingly godlike feats.

'In brief, i am able to commune with spirits within the locale thus obtaining information from them, and if they are willing, i am able to retain them within my body for a time and gain the powers of said spirit.' Upon having said his piece, he concluded by saying : 'Although i am not a very good one, i will still endeavor to be of whatever service i can provide, although i think our esteemed caller Zix will prove to be much more useful than i.' Ayak then leaned back, and called upon his years of experience to seem to have returned his previous half asleep state, when in fact he was closely scrutinizing Zix and Caprion the satyr for any sign of recognition and reaction, for it would be somewhat of an indicator of Zix's competence as a caller, or at the very least his news network concerning matters of the spirit realm.

  8. Even as he stared upon the carved wooden box on wheels as well as the steed that was there to provide motive power, Ayak was reminded of the palanquins of his native land. 'Hmm, even now we still have much to learn from foreign cultures and practices. No man should be placed under another, or be given the power of the yoke to lord over his fellow man. Maybe i'll bring this up at the council when i get back after this mission.' Ayaks musings continued even as he said: 'Milady Ailios, i thank you for providing us transport. It is truly a boon for this old man's feet, i was getting tired of their incessant grumbling and complaining'. Chuckling to himself at his little white lie of a joke, he nodded to the enchantress and boarded the carriage, allowing Dorian to get in ahead of him. Having since learned the names of all his party members, he called out to Zix through the open door: 'Zix, it would do well for us to get moving, for speed is what will grant us the advantage in endeavors such as these.'

  9. Now that two of his newfound companions had said their piece, Ayak decided that it was time to say his as well. Leaning forward from his seat beside the party, he addressed all three of them. 'If this lowly monk may put in a word?' Ayak paused a moment before continuing on. 'It should be known that while it matters little in the long run which foe we decide to pursue, the spirits have told me that despite the words of lord Iian, the smoothest path to victory lies in us confronting that giant that roams the watery deep. Even so, i am but a measly fifth of our collective voice, so i am content even if we as a whole reach a different conclusion. All i ask, is that we remember to give appropriate weight to that which has been revealed to us by those of a higher power.' Ayak was certain of the truth concerning the revelation he had just made, but even so, he had decided to abide by whatever outcome the group would decide upon. After all, it did not matter whether the left hand or the right hand held the food, as long as the mouth was fed in the end.

  10. you know, now that i think about it, a team of archers would be amazing in taking down a beast of the sea, since melee warriors will not be doing much in the watery depths of the ocean. Maybe some of the many marksmen in the rp could form a fully ranged strike team. RAIN DEATH FROM ABOVE!!!

  11. 'Well, it would seem i have made a clown of myself, mi'lady Ailos.' Ayak said with a laugh after hearing Ailios' comment about his actions. 'It would be my pleasure to do as you suggest.' He made a mental note to correct the enchantress about her misconceptions concerning his abilities at a later date, seeing as he knew no magic at all- his abilities were solely to do with conversing with spirits and allowing them to take residence in his body instead of the manipulation of mystic forces. Ayak then returned to where Zix, Silef and Dorian were situated, and listened to the conversation that was going on within the group as Dorian attempted to gather information about Zix and Silef. He could tell Dorian what he wished to know, but such information was the kind that had to be revealed by the person in question. And so he sat, watched and listened as the spirits and people continued to converse around him.

  12. Upon hearing Zix's words, Ayak realised what an insult it was that he had directed towards Zix and hastened to make reparations. 'Hmm, do forgive the ramblings of this uninitiated fool, o great caller, for it would seem you share a bond similar to those you call as i do with the spirits around us. I was a fool to assume that you were the same as most others who call upon those not of this world.' He hoped that his words would pacify Zix, for he himself knew well the feeling of anger when others referred to the spirits as his servants.

    ....

Soon after the conversation ended, Ayak noticed the hulking giant lumbering towards them. As Dorian, as he called himself, made his introductions, ayak thought: 'Though i doubt we need a frontliner, and as much as i'd like some ranged support from one of those hunters, he does seem nice enough. I will trust the workings of the great spirit on this one. Furthermore, my studies may have given me some knowledge of the lie of the land, yet there is no beating what you experience first hand. Some form of sustain would be more than welcome as well.' All this took but a sliver of time in Ayak's mind, and as soon as Dorian finished his introductions, He stood up, took the man by his hand, and said: 'Although i cannot speak for the others, i for one would be honored by your addition to Ailos' party. I am Ayak Tanahmas, and i look forward to facing our future trials and joys with you, Dorian.'

Now that he had spoken with two of the others who were to join Ailos, Ayak decided that it was high time he met with the leader that they had chosen. Moving surely towards the table where Iian, Asgall and most importantly Ailos were seated, he bowed once again to her and said: 'Although i am but a humble monk travelling to see the world, i would still strive to be more than just an observer, a passive factor in the workings of fate. No matter which arm of this operation you assign us to carry out, i pledge myself to serving this cause. My kris and my skills are yours to use as you see fit until this menace is satisfactorily dealt with.' Having said this, he the took up a position behind Ailos, while subtly motioning for Zix and Dorian to come forward and officialize Ailos as the one who would lead them in their quest.

  13. Ayak took a stand, and moved himself over to where the Zix and Silef had already started to form a group of sorts. Looking at the both of them, he beckoned the both of them to come closer, smiled earnestly and said: 'If you two would have me, it would be my honor to fight alongside you.' Even as the words left his lips, he could sense the local spirits affirming his decision, telling him that he was on the path intended for him by the great spirit. Even so, he could sense a misunderstanding occurring between the leaders and the others present. He would have to remedy that.

He addressed the entire room, saying: 'But even as i present my petition to you two, i believe that we have not truly answered the question that our esteemed leaders have posed to us.' Sparing a glance in Iian's direction, Ayak continued: 'They have decided to go about this by first allowing us to choose who we wish to serve under, only after which our respective adversaries would be determined. 'Mi'lady, i believe it would be unwise to choose a task before we fully take into account our assets, that in this case being our teammates.'

Taking the slightest of moments to deliberate the choices at hand as well as to recall what the spirits had told him about his future partners, Ayak addressed the two before him. 'If i am mistaken, do forgive this humble monk of his foolishness, but i gather that you, my hooded friend, are a highly accomplished summoner of some sort with multiple arcane beings at your beck and call, while mi'lady is a noble warrior who fights with implements fashioned of shining light.' Ayak now had a rough idea of their talents, but realized that they still knew nothing of his. No matter, he would just clarify the extent of his abilities to whoever his teammates were when all this sorting was said and done.

'Bearing all this in mind, i believe our abilities would synergise greatly with those of our great mage Ailos,' as he gestured in her direction, 'seeing as to how we lack any form of misdirection and subterfuge amongst our tentative team, and with a summoner who can bring to bear otherworldly beings to assist in our fight, i doubt we would require the hulking offensive wall that Asgall brings to the table. However, this is but the opinion of a simple man such as I, and i am sure that you two will be able to come to a wiser decision than i have.' Upon saying his piece, Ayak bowed in the direction of Ailos and drew up a nearby chair. He sat down once more, while beckoning for both Zix and Silef to grab chairs of their own. He continued to observe the room, noting the alliances that were starting to form between those present, but most of his attention was focused on Zix and Silef with hope that they would muse on what he had said.

  14. Upon walking into the room, Ayak noticed that he was among the last to arrive, deducing the fact from the eleven other people in the room who had already assembled prior to his arrival. Without a second glance, he walked up to the central table, and bowed to each of the leaders in deference, following which he turned around and bowed to the assembly in general. 'I look forward to traveling with such esteemed personages.' he said as he straightened up, and eventually settled on the floor right by the frail looking man swathed in black, noting how his new neighbor flinched ever so slightly as he took his seat. As the attention of the others were slowly returned to their respective tasks, Ayak continued observing each one in turn, and kept his thoughts to himself, yet smiling and nodding at anyone he managed to make eye contact with.

  15. Name: Ayak Tanahmas

    Gender: Male

    Age: middle aged, nearing 60

    Appearance:

Lean, wiry, of medium height, with skin bronzed and hardened due to a lifetime of living in the south. Body bears evidence of scars throughout, ranging in length from that of a finger joint to almost that of a forearm. Moves with an alien grace, yet always seems like a coiled spring, ready to leap at any moment. Upon observation, one sees a weather worn, age lined face shaped like a sunflower seed, sporting a somewhat stubby nose and slightly slanted eyes set somewhat apart from each other. Unexpressive, tightly closed lips. Sports a tightly plaited beard of about 2 handspans in length and rolled into a bun, with peppery grey hair cropped short and close to the scalp.

    Backstory and abilities:

Hailing from the Lamay peninsular in the far south, Ayak was born to a caste of warrior monks under the service of the prophet king Jokowira, also known as the conduit of the Great spirit's will. Dedicated since birth to carrying out the will of the spirit, Ayak was trained in the disciplines of the monks, among which included conversing with the spirits, the knowledge and legacy of their people and of the world, as well as the time honored martial art of pencak silat. Upon coming of age, Ayak went forth into the world as one of many field operatives, to better guide the world along its course in line with the great spirit's revelations.

Preferring the ways of the pen rather than the sword, his modus operandi is to seek out individuals in pivotal positions, be they great leader or lowly handmaid. Backed by his many years of experience and extensive knowledge, along with some exposition from the spirits, Ayak sets their course with a gentle gesture or diplomatic speech. Eventually like a well guided arrow, events would align and destiny would move along its intended course. However, this does not mean that Ayak is unprepared for hostile confrontations. In such situations, Ayak relies on his well grounded training in pencak silat, and wielding his kris taming patta, he possesses more than ample capability to fend off many threats in his line of work. And if even that does not suffice, Ayak has recourse to the ancient skill known only to some and mastered by few- spirit sieving.

Spirit sieving is a door open only to those who have gained the trust of the spirits. Upon arriving in an area, practitioners are able to commune with the local spirits. Upon obtaining consent, a spirit sieve can then absorb certain spirits to reside within him for a time, gaining powers such as increased strength, faster reaction times, even control of the elements as well as the wisdom and knowledge of the local spirits. However, unlocking these abilities take time, with about one month being required to fully unlock the complete range of powers. This is due to the fact that absorbing spirits require much time and energy, and one has to sway each spirit individually to their cause. Furthermore, upon leaving the area, all resident spirits have to leave the body, causing temporary physical weakness and fatigue, much like the action of sieving.

For all his strengths and abilities, Ayak is not without his flaws. For one, although he understands the function of most machinery, he is utterly unable to operate even the simplest contraption. Even a child's plaything turns to broken cogs and screws in his hands. Another failing is that Ayak is utterly terrified of heights, refusing to enter buildings even 5 stories off the ground. His advanced age also plays a factor, seeing as he no longer enjoys the vigor of youth. However, such problems are rectified when ayak absorbs the appropriate spirits, allowing him to shore up his shortcomings.

P.S. Ayak is not meant to be a powerhouse without his spirits, and will be played as more of a diplomat and info gatherer.
