Aight, so this topic is a multipurpose exercise in masturbation, expression and simple demarcation.

I’m “leaving” reborn, in so much as anyone still waiting on the game and Starlight can really leave Reborn. Backing out of the community, so to speak. I’ll still be in Reborn adjacent communities, Chances are anyone who cares to will still be able to get in touch.

I’m massively downplaying the actual cutting of the ties here, so you’re probably wondering why I’m leaving, if you even recognise me. I’m sure anyone browsing the forums will not. Discord’s my jam, or rather was.

But why? Why the topic, well, that’s where the masturbation comes in. Get it- cu- Ok basically a part of me wants the melodramatic exit, the flourish at the end of my existence here. It’s six years of my life. Even when I’m sixty, that’s a tenth of my life spent in Reborn. I can understand in part why people made these posts, why some people made them several times. But that’s only half of it.

Quite simply, Reborn does not fit me anymore. As a place to talk, chill out, lurk, Reborn was a really cool fuckin jumper. It was snug, warm, comfortable and most importantly familiar. Which was crucial during my first year of uni. I came here when I was 15. Over six years I daresay I’ve grown enough that the whole question of theseus’ ship, where you ask if you’re the same person if every part of you has been replaced, might apply. I’m not the only one either. The community has changed and grown and gone through several generations of regular users with their own dynamics, in-jokes, cliques.

As time went by, I otherwise did my own thing. But recently I’ve found the current state of Reborn to simply not be to my tastes. To be clear, this is okay! People can talk about, do as and meme about as they like and far be it from me to demand they change that if everyone is happy. All it means is that Reborn isn’t the place for me. Which is fine, because I have other friend groups, IRL and in other servers, to talk to and spend my time with.

So, there’s that. I don’t mean to judge or shame anyone, which is why I’m not giving any examples. People do people. What’s more important to me now is this last part.

15 is a stupidly delicate time in a guy's life. With the amount of time I was spending online, it would be ridiculous to suggest it didn’t have an effect on me, negligible or profound.

I met so many people. Funny, odd, irritating, boring, infuriating, adorable, eerie, give me an adjective and I bet I could give you a person. Not even ships in the night randoms as you’d imagine on the internet. People who spent months if not years in the community before going their own ways.

Good GOD, the petty dramas were fascinating and intoxicating to a guy excluded from and oblivious to most of that in school. The forums would fuckin hum with activity when people got a bee in their bonnet, whether it was incredibly tense and serious discussions on real life race related politics and tragedies or misguided attempts at a nuanced discussion of lolicons and paedophilia. Seeing how people conducted themselves, why the rules we have are in place, the things that resulted in, the toxicity and the shitty, shitty people. It was fascinating and in retrospect a very mundane kind of horrifying. I should not have been involved in a lot of it, I feel.

Reborn was my first real interaction with members of the LGBTQ+ community. It was the game and community that first introduced me to the concept of non binary people. Trans people were no longer the punchline in a sitcom here. I became more comfortable with my own forms of expression and broke away from what I was allowed to like and dislike in my real life circumstances. Eventually, recently, I determined I was bisexual, something I’m not sure I would have considered anywhere near as early without these experiences.

Reborn is an imperfect, glorious, surprising piece of the internet that I fell into and, I hope, somehow managed to come out a better person than I might have been otherwise. This last post, which might be pointless if my own refrain of “they always come back” is true, I at least want to end on a single note. One of gratitude.

One of my favourite things I helped to do in this community was a christmas card for the auth, presented during one of the showdown christmas parties. So the link below and the last thing I post is going to be that card and the old words of so many of the people I’ve met here.

More and more i'm finding its just not worth clinging to a phrase or word i'd casually use because the word itself actually has some alternate meaning somewhere else on the web of the internet that just doesn't fly.

To the people who are probably tutting about the choice in backchannels or thinking about writing up a long-winded post about why you should be allowed to use the one word with that context, maybe ask yourself how much it really matters when put up against people being able to feel ok about the community they're in.

This from the guy who raised a stank years ago about being able to make gratuitous dick jokes in lobby a few years ago.

It's all up in the air. You can have stories with a small handful of characters with very little exposure to the audience, see your typical ghost story isolated in X spooky place, that doesn't even have much happen. Instead it focuses on atmosphere. Or you can have slice of life that's just... not much happening. Just a cast of likable people doing things in their daily lives.

I personally value a sense of progression within stories. You can throw as many characters as you like at me and I might get attached, depends on the individual character, whereas I'm almost guaranteed to dislike a slow pace where nothing really happens or something of note does happen but it's a small thing that didn't warrant x amount of time being spent on it. This in turn reflects whenever I write, I tend not to linger on a scene. Sometimes that fucks me over, something to catch in the editing process.

Appearance: Garret starts at the skin and goes from there, so his appearance must be impeccable. Dressed in a fine maroon suit and a black silk tie, Garret strides through the world on long legs, looking down on the world with sharp eyes of verdant green. His thin nimble fingers occasionally comb through his slick red hair to arrange a stray lock or dash away a speck of dust.

Mask Appearance: Garret wears a mask that may as well not be a mask. One form fitting black circle clings to his right eye. It serves as a constant reminder to himself that his real mask is his control of his expressions and emotions. It also serves as a small way to distance himself from his father, a co-owner of the Lowell-Fawlty line of Mask fashion, contrasting the elaborate designs sold by the line with his simple choice in style.

Personality: Garret is a man who enjoys a challenge and he found no greater challenge than what he found in gambling. He indulged in the fight to impose order over chaos and luck, to understand and predict where others only saw pure fortune. The fight to shift the course of a hand of poker in his favour and then face his opponent is to Garret as a glass of water is to a parched man. This indulgence comes at no small cost though and Garret struggles to reconcile his responsibilities with his wanton habits even as he goes through life day to day adapting his lifestyle to fit his wins and losses. He cares for his family and friends and this conflict of desires can drive him into quite the morose mood at times. Garret, like gambling, is a man of highs and lows.

Background: Garret Fawlty was born into a wealthy family as the first son to a loving mother and a stern father, Lorelei and Basil Fawlty. He grew up and gained two twin siblings, a brother and a sister called Fitz and Fira. Garret was educated and in no uncertain terms told he would have to take his fathers place as the business leader of his company, Lowell-Fawlty Mask manufacturers. Garret never inherently opposed this as he grew up even as he got closer and closer to working age. The security was kind of nice but ultimately the lack of a choice put pressure on him. A pressure that drove him to the more hedonistic places in life.

Garret as a teen frequented the few places in the Wands district he could get to, barred from many of the establishments due to his age. When he came of age though he spent his birthday with his friends, enjoying the luxuries of the Wands. From there he developed a taste for gambling and the freedom to make any choice he liked, for better or for worse.

His habits however drove a wedge between Garret and his father. Basil naturally disapproved of what he saw as a waste of money and Garrets lacklustre contributions in the company resulted in a fierce argument between them. Garret left the company, taking his savings with him. He now scrapes out a living as a high roller in the Casinos of the Wands district. He's kept his distance from his family for the most part.

Suits: Garret's skill set lies in engineering circumstances on the fly to make it as likely as possible that he'll get what he wants. This means he has a focus on manipulating the people and things around him long enough for his goals to be achieved. This stems from his career as a gambler, where the path to victory lay in minimising the circumstantial risk involved.

Swords: 4

Physically Garret's only notable trait is his height and he's rarely had any fights in his life beyond childhood scuffles. A low score represents his inexperience and lack of a physical inclination towards combat in his life without an Arcana. He is able to create gusts of wind with a good amount of force behind them, enough to knock a person without good footing over and also create weak blades of wind to attack his foes, strong enough to draw blood but without much penetrating potential. He can also create small bursts of light and sound in the area that last for a second each that can daze foes.

Cups: 4

Garret has the ability to read someones fortune, this fortune manifesting as three of the major arcana, one for the past, present and future, though he lacks knowledge of any of the meanings involved. He also has the ability to direct a persons focus to any given object or person within line of sight for a moment.

Wands: 9

Garret has a small bag of tricks at his disposal. First, his attunement to the wind allows for substantially increased movement speed, dexterity and visual clarity and detail such that he could easily perform complex tricks of sleight of hand or pickpocket someone. Garret also has the ability to teleport to any point in his line of sight, though repeated use is draining, and can also swap the position of two objects of similar size, people not included. Finally, he has the ability to change the outcome of what is seen as an uncertain or random event such as the roll of die, a coin toss or a lottery and so on provided there is no sabotage.

Coins: 8

Garret has considerable personal control as a result of spending time with people who pick up on an individuals tells for long stretches of time during a high stakes environment. This translates directly to his control over the Arcana's power.

Fortune: “Ultimate Gambling Skill: Change the Winds of Fortune” Wheel of Fortune grants the charge the ability to swap their fate with another’s. Garret if he knows the fate of another may use this to take a horrible fate away from someone he cares about or a good fate from an enemy. However, he must swap this fate with whatever was meant to befall himself. He cannot know his own fate, and once swapped, the results CANNOT be changed from there on even if they have not occurred yet.

A good chunk of people came on a wave of Shofuism, a huge influx of members joined at that point and lo and behold the community grew. I for one still enjoy the game when an episode comes out and I can still remember a good part of the first 3/4s of teh game fairly well. With recent changes and a large addition to sidequests and the like I'm not so knowledgeable anymore. I did once try an LP like so many people, got to Spinel and then I just dropped like a stone for uploading. Ripperoni. I'm now here because I like the people here. I want more people to like though, the old fogies I hang around with just grumble.

Probably the places people interact and the dynamic this had. We started on Pokemon Online and for a year or so we stayed there with the last season of league and various other community wide events. then we switched to Showdown and there were some issues commuting there but eventually we got back into a regular chat routine. Then most recently discord became a thing. The community was slowly transitioning into a general gaming community as interest in pokemon waned so Discord was the obvious place to migrate to. All the while forum activity waxed and waned with Reborn City and the RP forum being the core activity centres. Really that hasn't changed too much but there's less vets flitting around anywhere outside of ace.

Feel free to ask questions too, the whole point is to get to know us bud.

Community questions:
So, who are you?: Hi, I'm Felix. I've been around since early 2014 and my role in the community is. Hm. Oh, It's...! Ok idk I just hang around and dip into conversations as and when I like. Outside of reborn I'm a university student studying creative writing and wasting too much of my time to be healthy. I typically lurk in discord lobby these days waiting for an interesting topic to come up. I currently go by pink but i will literally change my name at the drop of a hat. My avatars are typically static on discord tho. If you suspect it's me just click my name and hey, Felix it will be.

Anything you're responsible for? The auth don't typically trust me. Every so often in the reborn parties I've been seen hosting music or an event. I am also responsible for a good chunk of tangents and conversations taking a turn towards territory just shy of the rule against sexual content.

Ok maybe not the most social post but its all in good fun, tooootally.

What can I talk to you about? I'm a huge anime nerd who keeps up with the seasonal anime so I'll take on all corners in a conversation about this. I can also hold a decent conversation about a variety of games so if you're talking about something in lobby don't be surprised if I hop in. Otherwise I like to think I'ma jack of all conversational trades. I don't know niche stuff so don't expect me to know about silent Russian cinema or some other obscure yet kinda respectable interest. I'm also a sucker for arguments, I like debating controversial things. It's just plain interesting.

"Maybe it's easier to maintain." Polly suggested to Rocky. "Magic parts might be more durable, who knows, we'll find out on the magic course." She was certainly looking forward to the class, though a small part dreaded losing that sense of wonder that came with just not knowing how it worked.
