1. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Smogon and certainly not Serebii. I use both often myself. I'm just rather confident that there's still a number of undiscovered and better alternatives out there. As for being new to Competitive battling, I'm hoping to get some sort of an introduction up soon to transition people from casual gaming to competitive level battling. Though honestly the best way to do that is just to fight people...
2. I'd say they're getting darker. We went from "Let's steal Pokemon!" to "Let's steal Pokemon so we can actually accomplish a goal.... in order to steal Pokemon with a boss!" to "Let's use Pokemon to change the world for the better." to "Let's use Pokemon to change the world and make it mine." Unfortunately, each team has been even more of a joke than the last. Part of the problem is that in a game, you have to win, which means the bad guys don't stand much of a chance. So how do we get competent bad guys if they always have to lost? Something beyond traveling the world just for badges would be nice though, I have to say. Am I holding my breath for it though? Not in the least.
3. Wow, hi. I love your avatar. It's either too much or too little. It may be a child's game- But it's also a world no less than any other world. ...Except the part where it's not real. Anyway, think about it, really? Edit: Oh, god... I forgot about that emoticon. I didn't think I'd be first one to fall for it. >.>
4. Oh, with something like that, you're allowed to use your starter to train it. I should have clarified. So I was a failure and accidentally overwrote Bulbasaur's Tackle. Because of this, I was stalled to struggle and consequently death by a Lass's Oddish and Bellsprout. Finally, after I learned Razor Leaf, I cut through and caught myself an Abra~ It quickly evolved, and was killing everything. It was about that time Misty's Starmie showed up, bitch-slapped it twice, and crushed its little soul. Talk about failure. Ah, what to do...
5. Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the fourth and final incarnation of PokéPlace [Re[Re[Reborn]]]! With the impending release of Pokémon Black and Pokémon White versions, the reign of the fourth generation is finally drawing to a close. With it, the meta-game that has exploded with the addition of wi-fi will most likely crumble nearly instantly as trainers scramble to the be the first to the top of the 5th gen's new and even more expansive competition. Consequently, I would like to take the opportunity to issue a final challenge to trainers- The Reborn League, which PokéPlace has long-promised is finally up and running! Everyone is invited to take on all 17 leaders, and earn their claim to fame-- Additionally, I'd like to offer a number of opportunity for trainers to prove their ranks not just to the leaders, but among each other as well. Consequently, PokéPlace will be hold regularly scheduled tournaments, both online and through the actual games. All are encouraged to join, and there will be prizes. There WILL be a competition this opening week, but not a typical tournament, persay. Nonetheless, stay tuned for more information. Tournaments, as well as the sites they're hosted on, however, do require people. Therefore, if everyone does their best to wrangle in all the trainers we know, more fun will be had by all. It's my mission to keep everyone nice and occupied as we continue to anticipate the coming of the fifth generation games. Everything done, I'd only like to close by saying- Welcome to your home for the next nine months!

8. Music is one thing, but I'm curious as to what sorts you'd like to listen to as you battle? Personally, I just downloaded lots of PokeRemixStudio's remixes and always listen to those. Same style, better sound; but i could imagine doing some harder core rock. So does anyone have any personal sound tracks?
9. Stolen from an obvious source, but I'd miss ranting here if I didn't post it. The concept is simple +talk about good things like this -talk about bad things like this +host finally fixed the intermintent errors -still no server. etc.
10. Allow me to explain. Completely unlike the Reborn League Challenge, a Monotype Challenge is where a player cuts through the story mode of the games, using only one type of Pokémon. Sound easy? Then I invite you to see for yourself. Of course, some, such as... water or flying will be much easier than others, like ghost or ice. In fact, some are flat out impossible due to a lack of variety. But that's no consequence. Shall we begin? I'll start with the rules- 1. Obviously, you may only use Pokémon of the type you have chosen (with the following exceptions) 2. You may use dual-types, as long as one is of your chosen type. 3. You may use Pokémon who will evolve into a Pokémon of your chosen type. 4. You may use your starter only until a Pokémon of your chosen type is available, at which point, you must then catch it and ditch your starter. (T_T) 5. You may carry HM slaves, but they may not be used in battle under any circumstances. 6. You may trade for evolution, but not for Pokémon not found in your game, eggs, or extra TMs of any kind. You must use only the TMs found on a single cartridge. 7. Hacking is not allowed. Duh. So, all that's left is to pick a type, and a game. You have to "beat" the game with only that type, and some types won't work for some games. Fortunately, we've got you covered- RSE Beaten: Upon catching or defeating Rayquaza and defeating The Elite Four. For Emerald: Upon catching or defeating Groundon and Kyogre and defeating Steven. Ghost and Dragon types are not allowed due to a lack of pokemon. Steel types are not allowed unless you have Jirachi from the Bonus Colosseum Disc In the case of a Flying monotype, you are allowed EITHER Salamence or Rayquaza. FRLG Beaten: Upon catching or defeating Mewtwo, and defeating the second wave of The Elite Four. In the case of a flying monotype, you are allowed EITHER Dragonite or one of the legendary birds. In their respective elemental monotypes, the birds are allowed. Steel, Ghost, Dragon and Dark monotypes are not allowed due to a lack of pokemon. DPP Beaten: Upon catching or defeating of Heatran For Platinum: Upon catching or defeating of Heatran and defeating of the second wave of The Elite Four Dragon, Fire, Ghost, Steel, Rock, Electric and Dark monotypes are not allowed due to lack of pokemon In Platinum, due to the expanded Sinnoh dex, Steel, Electric, Dark and Ghost monotypes are allowed. HGSS Beaten: Upon the catching or defeat of Mewtwo, defeating of the second wave of the Elite Four and defeating Red. Ghost, Dragon, Dark and Steel monotypes are not allowed due to a lack of pokemon. In the case of a Flying mono challenge, you are allowed EITHER Dragonite or one of the legendary birds. In their respective Fire and Psychic monotypes, Ho-Oh and Lugia are allowed, however in a Fire monotype you are only allowed EITHER Entei or Ho-oh. In their respective monotypes, the legendary dogs are allowed. ------------------------------------------- Information based off of Prettzel of the CoD Forums ------------------------------------------- All that said, I encourage you to try your hand at one of these, post your progress every once in a while, etc. I've already started mine- I'm doing a Psychic monotype (surprise, surprise...) on Leaf Green. I just beat Brock, but unforunately, I have yet to encounter any psychic types yet. It's a depressing prospect, really. =(
11. What's your favorite Pokémon and WHY? Yes, this thread was completely obligatory. Mine, as most people here know is Mismagardevoiurs. *ahem* Allow me try again. Gardev... No, Misma... Ga.... M.. mgmgmgm. Basically, I can't choose between Gardevoir or Mismagius. Totally depends on my mood, the direction of the wind, what color I last saw, and how long it's been since I got a text from A- ...anyway. The Why part. I'll have to get back to y'all on that. I don't have an answer, and my sleep deprivation level is over 9000. You can tell because my posts are becoming more and more scattered as I go.
12. I hear this a lot; about every three or four years I think: "The new Pokémon suck." "The original 150 will always be the best" "All the new ones just look weird." And I never believe it. Now, we're getting a lot of that again with the fifth generation creeping up on us, despite saying that for the past three generations. ....Why? Are the designs really inferior? Can you show me how? Please? Or is it a nostalgia factor? New Pokémon crampin' your childhood style? Nearly all casual players side with the sentiment that the originals are always the best, but how about people around this site. What do you think? Are they really getting worse, or is it just in their heads? Or both?
13. So I recently "picked up" the Pokémon Special Manga, and I quickly noticed something- They're.... Translucent? You can see the Pokémon through the red part, and it's ingenious. I'd never stopped to question just how you knew who was in what ball, but this makes perfect sense. Despite that, you never ever seen any reference to this in the games and animé, and quite personally I would like to know why the hell not? I mean, really? Anyone? Thoughts?
14. I'm sure we've all tried them. Puzzle Challenge, Pinball, TCG4GBC, Mystery Dungeon, Ranger... Which ones do you like? Which ones made you scream in frustration as Ivysaur was just about to evolve when you got your second end of ball bonus after playing for like four hours and almost beating "NIN"'s high score? ...*cough* Me? Scream in frustration? Never. I kinda want to play Hey You, Pikachu again (not that I ever really played it before) to see what it was all about in retrospect. Pokémon Snap -NEEDS- to make a comeback. That game was so bomb, it made Electrode's explosion look like a splash attack. Pokémon Mystery Dungeon I was boring as hell, but the second series actually was very engaging. I recommend Explorerers of Sky. It has Vulpix. I like Vulpix.
15. OMG the movies. Which ones have you seen? More importantly, which is your favorite. Rhap and I are embarking on a quest to watch all the more recent Pokémon movies. We've both seen the first three a million times, so we skipped those and started with Pokémon 4ever, starring Celebii and Suicune. Having seen it before, I knew what I was in for, and quite frankly I didn't mind it that much. Maybe it was just late, but it was a very painful experience for him. The plot is paper-thin, I concede. And much of the movie seems like an excuse for them to quadruple their animation budget. They have some spiffy falling trees, but the giant twig demon Celebii morphs into is 3d-tastic, and it really just feels like all of their effort went into making special effects. It is saddneing. But it was very discouraging for Rhap... We'll try again soon enough. Anyway, I've seen all the movies through Destiny Deoxys and they do get less and less fulfilling after the third... 4ever may have been a black sheep though... However, I happen to be in love with the third movie, featuring Entei and the Unown. Rhap insists that the whole crystal fortress thing was creepy, but I think it was absolutely beautiful-- ....this comes as a surprise to no one who knows me.... --and in the end I basically really love everything about that movie for no reason whatsoever. So, how about you?
16. There's a site I really like. It's called Cave of the Dragonflies. Don't be fooled, it's a Pokémon site. The owner is Icelandic, and I admire her a lot. The site isn't much for competition though- rather the opposite, it's more about the franchise's flavor, or more accurately, whatever she feels like. However, I was reading an article on that site that was very relevant to competitive battling, and it's something I think the average trainer doesn't consider. Here it is- The important part is the third section- "Why This Does Not Work In Practice" Do you think the problems she listed are legitimate problems? Or does their realization ultimately provide further insight, but change nothing? Basically, does this matter?
17. Underused tactics, and new strategies may perhaps be the strongest asset to a trainer in the constantly evolving meta-game. However, due to the accessibility of Smogon, any old chap can Google a Pokémon and instantly have the top-tried-and-true tactics for their team. No imagination necessary; in fact, please check it at the door. I don't like this. So, are there any strategies you know to work that have flown under-the-radar? An example would be ParAttraConFlincHax as I detail in that link. Without such a wordy explanation, hopefully, are there any other ideas you all have?
18. What I'm about to detail is a move-set/strategy that those members more familiar with battling me know and fear, despite the fact that such a set, while violating no tiers, is almost completely unlisted on Smogon or other competitive sites. My question is- why? I've swept teams using this basic annoyer, and the lovely thing about it is that with just a little bit of luck, it can function as a sweeper or a wall, stalling out the end-game of a battle, or tearing through the the opponents' counters one by one. Luck -is- the problem, mind you, so as is the case with anything, it can't be perfect. The fact is, though, the odds are far in your favor, when you go for the 4-move combo that makes Parafusion look like child's play. Here's some numbers for you: A Paralyzed Pokémon attacks 75% of the time A Confused or Infatuated Pokémon attacks 50% of the time. So: Parafusion itself means 75% of a 50% rate, totalling a 37.5% chance of attack. Add attraction into that, and it drops to a measly 18.75% I'll be focusing on three Pokémon I know to use this set (though it is far from common- I've only seen it once besides myself) who's Flinching moves, come in a 20, 30 and 60% flinch rates, meaning, after factoring in their accuracies, their opposing Pokémon have an 80, 70, and 43% of attacking. Add this into the 18.75% from the three stacked status ailments, and the opposing Pokémon's chance of successfully launching an attack becomes 15%, 13.125%, or a whopping 8.0625%. Only eight out of every one hundred of your opponent's attacks work? I'll take it. Let's meet the candidates though- Now, most of you know my Mismagius. It runs: -Thunder Wave -Attract -Confuse Ray -Dark Pulse (20% flinch) Also surprisingly viable is a Stantler- -Thunder Wave -Attract -Confuse Ray -Stop (30% flinch) However, most appealing, dropping the attack rate to a single digit is the fearsome Serene Grace Togekiss- -Thunder Wave -Attract -Sweet Kiss -Air Slash (30% flinch, becoming 60% with Serene Grace ability) Notice that all three Pokémon come with at least one immunity. Switch in on a predicted immunity attack, or send it out after a KO for best results. In the former case, you have the added benefit from a potential retreat, allowing you to get an early first status on the opponent. Understandably, defensive but speedy EVs and Leftovers support maximize these set's performance. Let's assume those are used for all three. So, which Pokémon is the best choice? Mismagius comes with an impressive three resistances between its Levitate ability and Ghost typing, granting that advantage over its competition. Of the three, Mismagius also has a significantly higher speed, which means even if you fail to wall away the opponent's team, you can still have badly crippled one or several of your enemies with Thunder Wave, as there are surprisingly few things that will out-speed a max-speed Mismagius. Dark Pulse is used in place of Astonish despite the lower PP and flinch rate due to Mismagius' noticably higher Special attack, and the simple fact that Dark attacks, while having the same strengths as ghost, cannot be shut down by a normal type. Dark Pulse, however, has its drawback in having a lower PP and flinch rate compared to Stomp or Air Slash. Stantler, on the other hand, has better physical defenses, along with a bolstering Intimidate ability, further dropping the opponent's attack, meaning it does have that leg up over the comptetion (nevermind it's the only one of the three that really has legs...) It's Speed still beats Togekiss, however it has only one immunity, and overall average stats to back it up. Stomp's flinch rate is 33% higher than that of the preferred Mismagius, however, in the end, only a 2% difference is shown when the opponent is fully statused. Because of its average states, lacking immunities, and insignificant flinch rate advantage, Stantler is probably the least optimal of the three. Based on the flinch rates alone, Togekiss is the definite top choice here. In addition, it has two immunities, the highest base stats of the three, easily functioning as a special wall with this set, but at the cost of having the lowest speed of the three. In addition, while the move Air Slash is the only attack of these three to recieve STAB, it is also the only attack that does not have 100% accuracy. Indeed, Accuracy is one of Togekiss's faults, as unlike Mismagius or Stantler, Sweet Kiss only has a 75% chance to confuse the opponents, making this set riskier in that regard. In the end, however, the simple fact that its flinch rate doubles Stantler's and triples Mismagius may make Togekiss the highest preference between the three. Mismagius, however, may have more of a place on the average team, thanks to its multiple immunities, vastly superior speeds, and surefire accuracy So let's look at this a different way then- All statuses up and flinch moves are a-go, leaving you them with a 15% attack rate, or about 20% for the turns you have to renew Confusion (or 8 and 11% for Togekiss). This means that about four (two for Togekiss) out of twenty attacks will hit. With leftovers, you recover 1/16th of your health per turn. If the successful hits are evenly distributed throughout the attempts, this means about four out of every five turns (nine out of ten for Togekiss) will be free left-overs recovery, meaning 1/4th for Mismagius and Stantler, or 9/16ths for Togekiss. Togekiss will recover over half of its health before the next probably attack. Because of that simple fact alone, Togekiss is probably a much securer choice. As far as using the set, supposing you and an opponent switch in on equal footing, full health, etc, there is sometimes doubt as to which attack to start with. The number one rule is that you are not to use your Flinch attack until the opposing Pokémon has all three statuses already. So, which of the three do you start with, assuming its vulnerable to any of them? Consider that Confusion and Attract have higher attack-blocking rates. Your number one priority is to protect yourself. The difference between Confusion and Attraction, however, is that one hurts and fades away, while the other is permanent. If you're in a rush to KO the foe for some reason, Confusion is the way to go, but for your typical stall, Attraction is probably the most secure start, then followed by confusion. There are two exceptions in which you should use Thunder Wave first. Firstly, as Attract and Confusion will be erased if the opposing Pokémon switches out, Thunder Wave is the only permanent option. It should be used if you suspect an immediate switch, as some opponents will attempt to stall out your PP by switching out of the statuses. In such cases, the best course of action is to predict their switches, and get their surviving Pokémon paralyzed, and then start chipping away with your flinch attacks as they switch, statusing to force their switches. The second condition under which Thunder Wave should be used first is if the opposing Pokémon is speedy. Flinch does nothing if you can't strike first, and while at first it will only drop your opponent's attack rate from 100% to 75% it also means, with it's quartering of their speed, you're almost sure to go twice before their next attack, meaning after another Attract or Confuse Ray, their rate reaches 37.5% before they can do anything more. I believe that's about all I have to say on the subject. What I am curious as to is why this often effective strategy isn't far more popular. Anyone got any ideas?
19. I'll start us off with a battle I saved a few months ago. I had first conceived my new team, a rain dance team that still fit my normal themes... Incidentally, due to that combination, I've labeled the team Black Haze, after the former member of this site. so I sketched it up on the now-arcane Shoddy, and started watching some battles at random. There was one person on there by the name of ArtemisChant who I noticed was using several Pokemon that I adore, and we got to talking. As is often the case with trainers, talking ended in battling, and so, this was my first battle as I was trying to learn how to use a rain dance team decently:
isshiko sent out Engarde (lvl 100 Gallade ?). And in fact, mind if I warstory this? isshiko: Go ahead. xD
And that's how that got here. Another reason I'm posting this, however, is that if anyone happens to still be on Shoddy, and sees a person by the name of ArtemisChant or Isshiko, ask them to join; show them to this log or something~
20. This is a topic for people to post their extraneous war-stories and other battle logs in. Personally, I say use quote boxes; they're prettier. But it doesn't totally matter.
21. For easy access, I'll index everybody's friend codes here- Amethyst (SS)- 1161 9137 3674 Stars (D)- 3995 7532 4253 Miss Kitty (P)- 4813 0923 5935 Will (W) - 2709 1161 0155 Maelstrom (- 0218 1683 6421
22. What are you hoping to see from the new games? We've already got super3d environments, greater animations, and a host of new Pokémon, but are there any features, or perhaps Pokémon ideas that your fingers are crossed for? Personally, I'm still holding out for some sort of Wolfie, Pokémon, and as I detailed elsewhere, I still think it'd be cool if they incorporated the environment into battles more... Also, personally, I'm loving the sound of that Illusion ability, but I do hope that they allow it to be strategically and effectively used... unlike, say, Ditto. Basically, I just really hope Zoroark doesn't become a throwaway gimmick.
23. So, as anybody who knows me should expect, I will be getting the new games imported from Japan, which means I'll be exploring Isshun months before the rest of you- and I would like to put that fact to use and provide something for the site from that. Here's my dilemma- I know that I can't measure up to Serebii or Smogon in terms of facts on the cutting edge- I don't have the support, the people to relay it to me, and quite frankly, I can't play that fast- actually, I'm the slowest player I know. On top of that, with it coming out as school starts, I can't devote every hour of my life to rushing through the game and finding everything before anyone else. The truth is, the most I have to offer is my own opinion, which may or not be of any value to anyone. We'll see. My question is, what do you think I should focus on, and how should I present it? Should I find a way to do a let's play? I'm sure that I can do battle logs with the gym leaders as normal, or hilight the newer Pokémon in just a blog type of coverage. How often do you want to see updates? Only at key moments, or every step of the way? And how far should I go to avoid Spoilers? Basically, the question is, what, if anything from me, will you want to see when Black and White roll around?
24. A natural topic at this stage- with the designs and info just barely trickling out from Japan, there are a flurry of mixed opinions on the new crew. So far- Zorua Zoroark Tsutarja Mijumaru Pokabu Reshiram Zekrom Chiramii Munna Gear Mamepato Hihidaruma Shimama Meguroko So, what do you think of them all? Many people so far have given their thumbs down on the designs- do you disagree?
