"Mama!! Mama, mama, Kuya's pulling my tail again!!"

"Hmm? Now, children, settle down. Your mother is working on something important. Will you take a seat beside me?"

"Stop it!! Kuya, stop it!!"

"My... look at those tears. We can't have that. Kuya, stop teasing your sister. It seems like I will have to resort to something a little more drastic. Would a story help you two behave, perhaps?"

"Story! Yes, mama has the best stories!"

"Ufufu... is that so? Mm... I have been thinking of one in particular of late... you may not be old enough to understand it just yet."

"Tell us!! Tell us!!"

"How can I refuse such a request? Under my tails you go, then. Well, where to begin... Once upon a time? Yes, once upon a time, there was a young man who lived in the forest..."

hello again everyone, and welcome to the ooc for fef: colors of autumn! your host is rai, who is a nutcase that couldn't stomach the thought of waiting years to run this game, so she's going to pilot two fefs at the same time. please be kind to me lmao.

this is a bit uncharacteristic of me, especially in light of scarlet crown, but for narrative reasons, colors of autumn will purposely be quite bare on worldbuilding of physical setting. you'll notice that there's no map or description of the setting beyond basics. this is pretty deliberate, and focus on the world as a physical space will be fairly limited in this game. you are, of course, still always free to ask me for additional information as you feel you or your character might need, but just keep in mind that setting just isn't my focus for this story and so my answers might be sparse or, as you'll find is a running theme in this game, i'll simply ask you to be creative!

without further ado:

setting:

Spoiler

during a period of unrivaled peace, culture flourishes throughout the land. literature and the arts bloom, scholars pursue high-minded study in a neverending search for meaning, and the aspiration towards beauty permeates all aspects of life. actions are deliberate and thoughtful; seldom are words spoken without deep consideration, and the art of poetry to convey subtle meaning flows between lovers, friends, even strangers. nowhere is the complex web of life more rich than in the daily dance of the figures within and around the imperial high court, and nowhere is mystery more cloaked, concealed behind powdered faces and painted lips.

the boundaries between the living world and the spirit world are thin. youkai walk among and around us, some benevolent and kind, some terrible and cruel. most people cannot see these spirits, and possess only superstitious and theoretical knowledge about the spirit world and the presence of nether force. but there are those special humans who have the power to divine and manipulate such things, and they are called onmyoji. these humans have been taught and trained in the art of onmyodo, and are quite elevated in social status, often providing readings, casting wards, and banishing evil spirits for those ordinary people. once practiced, onmyoji also have the ability to seal and command spirits themselves.

onmyoji and the clans:

Spoiler

onmyoji enjoy a great deal of respect and social capital in this world due to their spiritual power and oftentimes profound wisdom. though it is possible to develop the skills of an onmyoji on one's own and many do work and act independently, almost all of the most powerful and influential onmyoji belong to a few select clans that have historically provided their services within the imperial high court, either for aristocratic families or even the imperial household. as a result, these clans have gained a lot of political clout themselves. the imperial family still rules on paper, but in practice their power is very much limited by the influence of these clans, especially one in particular.

the hisamatsu clan

the most distinguished, largest, and influential of the onmyoji clans. countless renowned onmyoji have carried the hisamatsu name, and the name is just about synonymous with prestige. it is said that, centuries ago, they were founded by the god Yasa Niwashi ( or the Gentle Gardener, as he is sometimes called ), who descended from the Realm of Gods to bring blessings of prosperity to mankind and help them realize their full potential. the hisamatsu clan still follows yasa niwashi, and rely on him as the source of their power. the hisamatsu tend to be purists due to their preoccupation with maintaining their profound gift with onmyodo arts, and so incest of varying degrees is not uncommon.

to give thanks to the god for his gifts, for generations, the hisamatsu clan has practiced sacrifice. yasa niwashi is a god the governs souls, and the purest souls go to him in offering. those born into the hisamatsu clan who are marked with the blood of yasa niwashi become priests and priestesses, whose sole purpose is the great honor of giving their life to the god himself when they reach maturity. these priests and priestesses are considered sacred treasures of the clan, well-respected, and taken great care of. however, they live almost entirely in seclusion to keep their souls untainted by the ugliness of human life, and are absolutely forbidden from forming bonds with others, taking lovers, or having children, all of which are seen as human processes that sully their souls. should a priest or priestess somehow manage to commit these taboos, they are immediately put to death, if they don't kill themselves out of shame first.

the kujo clan

a clan with less power than the hisamatsu ( who doesn't? ) but has the unique benefit of being the clan historically with the most ties to the imperial family. several of their members have intermarried with the royals, and their loyalties have always been with them. they are generally the onmyoji who directly have worked with the imperial family, and so enjoy a certain level of status within the high court.

the kujo are also unique in that, while most onmyoji clans are pretty homogeneous, allowing only others to join through marriage, they allow members of any aristocratic background into their ranks, within reason of course. these people are eligible to receive the same status, level of responsibility, and training that native-born kujo are. the only exception is that non-native kujo are not permitted to marry native kujo for the sake of preserving bloodline. however, the social protection offered by this opportunity makes the kujo clan somewhat popular for those seeking asylum from political opponents.

aki no ha

who they are is still relatively shadowed; the only general knowledge is that they were originally a faction that split off of the hisamatsu clan, led by a distinguished onmyoji named hisamatsu no hayanari who possesses some ideological differences. he was joined by many others, some who believed his ideology, and some who simply want to see the hisamatsu clan fall. what, exactly, he's after is still unknown by most, even though this faction has existed for nearly 20 years. it's rumored that the reason they have not managed to truly put anything into action yet is because there's some dissension within the aki no ha too, but only those who are part of it have the details on that.

youkai and shikigami:

Spoiler

alongside the mortal world is the spirit world, where all manner of youkai traverse. 'youkai' is simply the umbrella term used to categorize non-human entities. these are spirits that the average person cannot see, though some with heightened spiritual senses might be able to faintly detect them. the only humans that generally have the ability to interact substantially with youkai are onmyoji, unless the youkai chooses to let themselves be seen. they come in many different varieties, and have origins as various as you can imagine. some noted kinds are:

previously human

most of the time, after they die, humans are escorted to the underworld, where their souls rest for eternity. however, occasionally, a human may have lingering attachments to the world and their soul may remain. over time, if they do not find peace, these human spirits can change, affected by spiritual energy and the power of their lingering attachment to gain properties they did not used to have. in other cases, humans may not actually have to die, physically, in order to become youkai. some extraordinary event may happen over the course of their lives, usually something that corroded or otherwise changed the human-ness of their souls, and they became spirits over time.

naturally occurring

youkai also simply exist and are born naturally. there are countless different kinds of these, from forest spirits to river spirits and everything in between. tengu, who take the shape of humanoid men and women with bird wings, are a well-known kind that live in clans within the mountains. ground-bound mountain youkai are often categorized as oni, and are characterized as brutish and warmongering, with strength being the main determinant in status. there are many others.

gods

sometimes mistaken for regular youkai, gods are supreme beings that govern humanity. their role is to objectively shepherd mankind along its path and oversee its development, whether that be through blessing or disaster. most gods reside in the realm of gods, though some walk among humans to fulfill their duty.

there are different 'hierarchies' or power differences that naturally occur within youkai. lesser or smaller spirits are more numerous and less powerful than greater or legendary spirits. they would not generally be able to be any sort of threat to a more powerful spirit, though in large numbers they can be dangerous. some smaller spirits may be under the care of greater spirits, such as, for example, the case of small river spirits being able to thrive in an otherwise dangerous and inhospitable river bed because they are under the protection of lord arakawa, the spirit who commands the river. lesser spirits don't generally become powerful enough to become great spirits, and vice versa, though there have been very occasional tales where both have happened.

shikigami are simply youkai that are under the command of an onmyoji. with their unique mastery of the art of onmyodo, onmoyji are able to manipulate spiritual energy. they can use this to perform all kinds of spells, including subduing and binding youkai. they may do this in order to calm a rampaging spirit, for example, or seal one away. bound, or sealed, youkai can then be forcibly commanded by the onmyoji, though controlling a shikigami in this way over a long period of time is usually extremely taxing. it is much more common for a youkai to consent to be sealed by an onmyoji they might respect, at which point there is a symbiotic relationship between them and the onmyoji would be able to summon them at will. alternatively, youkai may choose to help an onmyoji without being contracted to them, retaining their independence. the onmyoji in this case does not command or control the youkai, and the youkai is basically free to do whatever they want.

ten heavenly stems:

Spoiler

you are free to look up actual 'bios' associated with the heavenly stems, but you can also essentially pick at random if you'd like. these will be used to determine affinity choices and your choice should be noted in the 'affinity' section of your application.

you will be playing shikigami who are under the command of an onmyoji, who will be the 'lord' and main npc of the game. i will be taking ( for now ) a total of 9 players, 7 to start in prologue and a pair to be added afterwards.

due to the nature of shikigami and the setup of the narrative, i will be providing a rough 'role' selection for you to choose from if you'd like to.

  • 1-2 shikigami who have been with the onmyoji for a long time and were with him prior to his forest life
  • 3-4 shikigami who joined him after he started living in the forest. these can be local spirits if you choose, but i'm also happy to work in backstories from anywhere as long as you can explain why they would've met / joined up with him
  • 1 ( possibly ) who hasn't joined him yet but will at the start of the game

these are not hard and fast, as in they're not roles i exactly need to fill to those precise numbers. i would like at least some of them to fall within those roles, but don't feel like you have to app to target a particular one or that if we already have two apps for the first role, then you can't do that too without being competition. i am flexible and much more interested in finding a way to incorporate overall compelling characters.

mechanical stuff

GM notes on character creation, please read!:

Spoiler
  • when i say youkai origins are as varied as you can imagine, i really mean you can go wild on backstory. the individual stories of youkai are not generally tethered to concrete worldbuilding or even events that are going on in the narrative lore, which is the reason why the worldbuilding is relatively bare here. i want you to be creative without feeling like you need to fit your desired concept into a particular context. the sky is almost 100% the limit. you would be hardpressed to come up with something that would be completely ill-fit for this world. the only thing to keep in mind is that this does take place in the fictional equivalent of like 1000AD, so stay away from modern tech. if you want examples of how the feel of youkai backstories go, you are free to youtube memory scrolls from onmyoji
  • youkai appearances vary from 'pass for human to anyone's eyes' to 'fox on a floating bamboo tube'. go crazy with how they look, though i of course reserve the right to ask you to doctor if it's somehow ill-fitting. if you'd like examples, feel free to just look through a list of onmyoji's shikigami.
  • for the above reason, i do require a brief description of physical appearance to be included with the application. it doesn't have to be long, but i do want to have an idea of what they look like. this is because, depending on how you want your shikigami to look, mugs may be understandably very difficult or impossible. if you decide to do 'fox on floating bamboo tube', you may not be able to get your hands on a mug, for instance. this is fine, but i still want to have a picture in my head.
  • also for the above reason, if you do have a mug, please show it to me before you officially post it. sometimes a description sounds fine but i might see the mug and realize something doesn't quite fit. i don't anticipate having to reject anyone's concept, but i would just like to green light it.
  • possibly the most important: more than usual fefs, class concepts are very up to interpretation here. obviously, none of the PCs are ( currently ) human. they are not going to be soldiers in an army. because shikigami designs are so flexible, i do not want you to feel bound at all by the limits of fef classes. interpret them to fit your character however you want. your shikigami can use tomes to cast magic if that's what you want, but they can also just sling volcanic flame by nature of their powers too ( QL for tomes in particular is something i'm probably going to hard hand-wave as something that just needs to exist for mechanics ). you can interpret a tengu as pegasus knight class because they can fly, but they don't need to have a mount. likewise, a 'cavalier' might be a youkai who just has boosted mov and aid because they can ride winds. in fact, i encourage you to rename the classes in your application if you want, as long as you tell me what it originally was for the sake of mechanics.
  • the 'hierarchy' of your character does not have to be influenced by mechanics in any way. for instance, even though we are starting trainee class, you can make a legendary spirit or a youkai of very high status and canonically great power. likewise, you can make a lesser spirit even though we'll eventually be curbstomping enemies as promoted class. if you want your character to change status, that will have to be done through development ( and probably with good reason, given how rare it is ).
  • the only real restriction right now is that you can't make a god, even though they're technically a kind of youkai, though gods that've been stripped of their power/status and demoted to regular youkai is fine.

the rest of this is very standard to anyone in reborn's other fefs. they're largely the customary changes.

handbook 2.2: here

general:

Spoiler
  • All supports, rather than giving +5 Crit or +5 Dodge, now all give +2.5 Crit and Dodge.
  • When you reach Level 10 in First Class, you choose one weapon subcategory, either already ranked or from general category, and it gains 1 rank up. The same happens when you reach Level 10 in Promoted Class.
  • Every extra point in HP on character creation counts as +2 HP, for a maximum of +4 HP.
  • New formula for Ailment staves: Staff%= Staff Hit + [(User MAG - Target RES) * 3] + (SKL * 2) - (Distance between user and target * 5)
  • Characters may choose any starting weapon within the proficiencies of their class.
  • Downs/Death will be handled as follows in this game for now: if a PC is down for more than three consecutive turns, they die permanently. a PC can be revived from down up to three times per map with no consequences. at the fourth down, the PC will retreat from the map, but will return post-map. Yes, FEF casual mode. But I like it better than no-punishments phoenix mode.

skills:

Spoiler

Existing Skills:

  • Stillness, Provoke and Discipline are removed.
  • Luna is now Free.
  • Savior, in addition to its other effects, gives the user +3 Aid.

New Character Skills:

  • Aegis (Free): When suffering an attack from Bows, Hidden Weapons, Tomes and Dragonstones, there is a (SKL+LCK)% chance to reduce the damage dealt by half.
  • Desperation (Free): When making an attack, if you are < or = 30% HP, you may make any followup attacks immediately before your opponent counterattacks.
  • Dragon Ward (Free): When an adjacent ally suffers an attack, there is a (SKL+LCK)% chance, based on your stats, to reduce the damage by half.
  • Pavise (Free): When suffering an attack from Swords, Lances, Axes and Monsters, there is a (SKL+LCK)% chance to reduce the damage by half.
  • Rend Heaven (Free): During an attack, you have a (SKL+LCK)% chance to deal damage equal to half your enemy’s STR or MAG stat based on the type of weapon you are wielding. (lf using a physical weapon, calculate with enemy’s Strength. If using a magical weapon, calculate using the enemy’s Magic. Weapons capable of both use the stat that targets the same defensive stat as they do.)
  • Trailblazer (Free): Penalties for moving into forest, desert, deep snow, and hills tiles are reduced by 1. No ill effects from Weather are suffered as well.
  • Vengeance (Free) – During an attack, you have a (SKL+LCK)% chance to add half of your missing HP to your attack.

Characters may also instead opt to take one of these three previously-Cost versions of these Skills in exchange for the usual 30% Progression:

  • Celerity+ (Cost): Gives +2 MOV.
  • Desperation+ (Cost): HP threshold is 50% maximum or less.
  • Vantage+ (Cost): HP threshold is 50% maximum or less.

classes:

Spoiler

Trainee

  • Rider Trainee: If promoting into Cavalier or Pegasus Rider, may start with Sword (E) and a Slim Sword. If promoting into Cavalier or Wyvern Rider, may start with Axe (E) and a Hatchet. Relevant proficiencies will carry over to promotions, and Lance (E) with a Slim Lance can be chosen for all three routes.

First Class

  • Apothecaries: now can use vulneraries and concoctions on anybody and still attack during the turn, rather than just vulneraries on themselves.
  • Bandit: Reckless Strike’s bonus damage now applies to both hits when doubling.
  • Cavalier: Cavalier promotions have the same choice of preferred stats as Cavaliers. Cavaliers can choose between Swords/Lances and Axes/Lances for weapons. Can promote into Great Knight.
  • Fighter: “Clear a Path” ability now also applies to Pillars, to Forts, and to any miscellaneous terrains I create in the game that cost 2 MOV to move into.
  • Mage: Can promote into Battle Mage, keeping Anima proficiency and obtaining Bow proficiency.
  • Mercenary: 7 critical can be traded for 1 damage instead of 10 critical.
  • Pegasus Rider: May choose between Swords and Lances. Bonuses from Anti-Magic are gained when being attacked by the appropriate units as well.
  • Pirate: Rapid Strike is replaced with Opportunist: Gain +20 to Hit against enemies that are suffering from ailments or have 50% or lower HP.
  • Scavenger: Can promote into Shadow Sword. Scavenge Gold now only steals 50 Gold from First Tier enemies, and 100 Gold from Promoted enemies.
  • Shaman: instead of Ancient Gamble, gets Anthropomancy: Whenever this character lands the final blow on an enemy, they gain +10 to Evade and Dodge, +3 to Damage Reduction, and +3 to CON for one turn, non-stacking.
  • Tactician: Press the Assault’s effective range reduced from 3 to 2.
  • Troubadour: Healing Flow – each turn’s worth of healing is 1/2 the normal healing amount, not 1/3 the normal healing amount.
  • Wyvern Rider: May choose between Axes and Lances. Wyvern Scales is changed to 'gains +6 DEF when the unit has at least [max-1] HP'.

Promotion

  • Assassin: gets A (subcategory)/B (general) proficiencies for both Hidden and Bows.
  • Baron: has Runic Armor completely rewritten: “During the enemy phase, every time the Baron engages in combat they gain +1 damage until the end of the player phase.”
  • Battle Mage: Archers promoting into Battle Mage can choose between Anima and Light.
  • Berserker: 'Berserker Barrage' capped at a total of +24 crit from sacrificing DEF/RES.
  • Crusader: Crusaders may use their action to change the designated class type they gain advantage against, with the first time being a free action. This may be used up to 2 times after the first for a total of 3 times.
  • Dark Rider: May choose between Swords and Lances. Life Steal only heals 33% of max HP.
  • Duke Knight: May have Swords/Lances or Axes/Lances depending on what proficiency was chosen as a Cavalier.
  • Falcon Knight: Charge must be declared during the initial attack.
  • Great Knight: Trample is renamed to Sturdy and only gives +3 DR against unmounted units, not +3 Damage. Obtains Weapon Mastery: While the character with this skill is equipped with a weapon of a higher class than their opponent, +2 Damage and +10 Hit/Evasion.
  • Inquisitor: Miracle has a chance to activate before Benediction, rather than after.
  • Nomad Healer: can create healing items for the following costs instead of what’s in the book: Herbs and Vulnerary: 100 Gold. Tonic: 250 Gold. Concoction: 300 Gold
  • Paladin: Gains Aegis as a class skill that can replaced with another Free skill if Aegis was already chosen as a Free skill.
  • Saint: Splashover can be applied 3 times per map, and Doublebuff only takes 2 QL.
  • Swordmaster: Faster than the Eye capped at +30.
  • Templar: Gains Rend Heaven as a class skill that can replaced with another Free skill if Rend Heaven was already chosen as a Free skill.

They also have a (Luck)% chance of obtaining a Gold Bar (see Great Merchant below) when they defeat an enemy if they have a free inventory slot.
  • Warrior: Rough and Tumble is reduced to 3 spaces of 3 enemies and, once it activates, lasts until the end of the phase.
  • Wyvern Hunter: Has Axe proficiency if Axes were chosen as a Wyvern Rider.
  • Wyvern Knight: Has Axe proficiency and may choose between Lances/Swords if Axes were chosen as a Wyvern Rider.

Though they have the normal body shape of any other human, their features are anything but human-like. Their hair is dirty and disheveled to the point where it may have been blond, but simply looks greasy. They wear the most basic of basic outfit; a black cloak that reaches down to their feet, obscuring whatever feet they may have, with a hood that can easily cover Nil's entire face, something they do if they do not want to be seen. The cloak is damaged pretty badly to the point where it looked like it was very close to ripping, yet it stays the way it is.

Notes: Yuki, despite being a Youkai, mainly takes the form of a small girl (barely 5’0”) with frostbitten skin, grey eyes, and long black hair that somehow manages to have both a straight curtain and a long ponytail over it. She specifically wears a light blue kimono with fluffed up edges, combined with dozens of various red flowers across the surface. However, while she does wear fingerless gloves that barely poke out from underneath her sleeves, Yuki mostly goes around barefoot. Overall, she can generally pass as a normal person… If not for the fact that she looks dead, and causes frost to form on whatever she touches.

While she is a rather old Yokai, Yuki is rather childish, selfishly clinging to people that she likes, but trying not to be obvious that she does like them. Which just makes it more obvious that she likes them. Otherwise, she merely comes off as haughty, seeing herself as above most other Yokai and the like.

ah, @KitRougard you ought to have sent me your sheet, complete with appearance and backstory finished, privately first. i needed to okay it before you could post it here.

that being said, your PF should probably be -2 AS instead. which means you have to change your promo PS because you can't have two skills that affect the same stat. additionally, skills typically work off entire weapon categories rather than specific subcats ( unless they're balanced by a similarly weak PF ), so your other two skills should probably just be 'anima tomes' and 'bows' respectively. also just make it a flat +2 RES and +2 DEF when facing those weapons. no need for 'until next turn'.

and again, please send it to me over DM.

Appearance: A house cat of indeterminable breed, Tama has a slightly larger frame than you'd expect from a cat, and his round and yellow eyes have this..slight glint of intelligence in them, as if he knows more than he's letting on. His long black fur has a silky texture, causing him to feel nice and soft to the touch, save for a slightly harsher dark grey section on his stomach. His jaw has a bit of a triangular shape to it, and rows upon rows of well used and sharp teeth adorn the insides of his mouth, along with a nice and pink sandpapery tongue.

He has a small black nose that's all flat and very boopable. His tail is long, with long tufts of black fur that he often grooms out of habit. He speaks with a thick Kansai accent, preferring to do so in a clipped, fast paced, and demanding tone of voice, only deigning to do so when his meows fail to get his point across to the other cats. He rarely stands on two feet, finding it to be an inefficient way of walking.

Appearance: Kumawani takes the form of a tall, tanned, muscular man. One of his eyes is covered by an eyepatch, while the other is a a deep red. His hair is black, slicked backwards into a ponytail. He has no clothing above the waist, wearing an ornate sarong beneath the waist held tight by a red belt and seemingly created from a silvery crocodile's hide, being as tough as leather despite being as flexible as silk, and light white trousers beneath. On his back is an ornate irezumi, portraying a crocodile-like dragon with silvery scales ascending from water. His true form is a Wani, a waterborne dragon, resembling a mix between a crocodile and a dragon, with silvery scales. His disabled eye is fully blackened, almost as if absent from its socket, the other fully red.

Appearance: Kietasenshi is a very human-looking youkai, only a single thing marking him as supernatural. He stands at 5'9 with a stocky build, making him an absurdly big man by the standards of Japan of the Heian era, but perhaps not quite as impressive by the much wilder standards of youkai. He is clad in the distinctive armor of a samurai -- lacquered leather plate, mostly, but with iron here and there where vital parts are located, and the whole assembly painted a black color. Yet, despite this protection from the shoulders down, his head and, largely, his neck are unarmored. Because of this, his face can be seen -- usually grinning with some level of roguishness or bloodthirst, with a scar likely from an arrowhead letting out a small amount of fire, much like that of an onibi. His eyes are a brown color, and his hair is black, fairly short, and tousled; it is NOT in the typical topknot of a samurai. His sword is always at his hip.

Appearance: As a tsukumogami. Fuefuki’s true appearance is that of an old bamboo flute, carved and painted in a way that indicates its past use as an instrument in the court of a high noble house. After reaching his 100th birthday, however, he was given a soul and allowed to take a new form. Companion to Yoriie by that time, Fuefuki chose to appear as a human. He looks youthful, despite his age, and passes for human at a glance, but two short, flesh-colored horns protrude from either side of his forehead and his gold eyes possess a glow of their own. His straight black hair is bobbed at his chin, his ears are pointed, and he frequently wears an ill-humored expression except when performing alone – or for Yoriie. He wears three layers of formal robes which are intricately embroidered with gold that glows faintly just as his eyes do, an expensive-looking brown and gold obi, a brown haori with gold embroidered birds in flight across the back, and takageta roughly 10cm high. He is almost never without the bamboo flute from which he was born.
