Crescent, Nim, and the MC speculation.

Spoiler

I'm assuming Crescent and Nim were working together and on a 2nd playthrough, it's clear they were as Nim buys time by distracting us while Crescent recruits Melia, they both seem to be heavily invested in protecting us. Also Nim is totally flirting with us. Back on topic, Crescent brainwashes Nim despite apparently working together, and sends her to turn people to stone and ensures Lorna doesn't hurt the MC by tampering with her memories. Personally, i'm getting hints that Crescent is our actual mom. Besides her protectiveness of us, one huge red flag is after we defeat Rift Galvantula, Crescent states she knows it's pain, and Galvantula's big motif is protectiveness of her children. And in the cut scene on the boat, she treats Nancy quite harshly, which if read in a certain way, comes off as being jealous.  Perhaps being jealous doll Nancy was the one who raised us? She's always cold, condescending, and manipulative when interacting with people who aren't us. but during the Valor Mountain scene, She comes off as genuinely affectionate, mentoring, comforting and even... motherly, when she's talking to us in purgatory.

Also her room has a big portrait of the MC Avatars. Either she's our mother and those are her equivalent of baby photos  or she's not related and enamored with us for whatever reason.

So with that in mind, Nim's affection for us may have something to do with working with Crescent.

This is an interesting theory... Even though we haven't got any prove that Nim and Crescent are working together: When Crescent recruited Melia in Amethyst cave, time was stopped and Team Xen were the ones in pursue

I'm so glad I'm not the only person picking up mom vibes from Crescent! It's an theory I've been considering since the last time I played through Valor Mountain, back in Version 9. The way she speaks the player is so different from the way we see her interact with any other character in the game. She feels genuinely comforting in this moment. "It's time to reclaim those we've lost" always seemed...meaningful, somehow. Also, the fact that it's Crescent, not Nancy, to appear and urge your character to wake up and keep fighting, felt like a huge red flag to me. If we're truly dead, why aren't we speaking to the woman we know as our mother? Why is Crescent, who has up until this has been warning us to stay out of this mess, suddenly telling us to keep going? Playing through Version 11 and seeing her dialogue after the battle with Rift Galvantula really has me thinking that she's our mother, and that she had to hand us off to Nancy to keep us safe when her mission became too dangerous. Like you said, it would explain why she's so hostile to Nancy during their conversation on the boat.

Also, the fact that Nancy is hinted not to be human (being described by Team Xen as an "it/a doll" and being told she shouldn't be able to feel emotions) has me wondering if she is some sort of robot/fake human created solely to serve as a mother figure to the MC, or maybe if she is a real human, but has been brainwashed.

The rest of the theory is interesting as well, though it's been so long since I've played through the parts of the game involving Nim/Lorna that I can't really speak confidently about her. Though she was definitely flirting with us, haha.

We've already seen a few spells/spirits take human form, like Indriad/Angie's Maids, Kanon... Nancy could perfectly be the same servant-type being for Crescent, who had to hand the MC to her bc Danger. She did, but nobody said she had to be happy about it.
Alternative option, whatever made Crescent go into stormchasers separated her from the MC, and Spacea-Tempa made Nancy just so she didn't had to worry about our care.

I should also point out, Crescent and Nim are both psychic type specialists and they both have access to the alternate dimension. In addition, We know Melia going to the cave was the Storm Chaser's plan, and Nim distracting us from getting into the cave in hindsight does hint she was in on the plan too. I doubt she was directly working with the Storm Chasers because nothing in the past hints at that, but she was working with Crescent for whatever reason. Remember Nim right before her battle says something like " Okay i hope i bought enough time, it's the homestretch girl. " which may be referring to either Melia or Crescent. Slight paraphrasing but still the intent is there. In addition, when Crescent retrieves Nim, the dialog suggests they know each other.

Regarding Crescent as our mother theory though, i should point out, the prophecy points out the 8 light/dark ones  are said not to be born of man, and Crescent actually being our mother would imply we aren't a light/dark or Crescent herself isn't human. But assuming Nancy is the one who gave birth to us (and at least female 1 Avatar supports this) then we fit the prophecy. Then again, us being the Interceptor would imply we aren't part of the prophecy at all.

EDIT: Also random thought, but Crescent does fit the archetype for being the Champion, helpful, mysterious character? Works against the local evil team? Crescent having worked with Nim could explain Alexandra's reaction to Venam's champion comment.
