With the difference in quality, I understand completely.  The only rom hacks that I really (might) recommend checking out is Prism and Adventure Red.  I haven't finished either, so I can't really comment on the whole game but they each have their charms.  

If you have any Gen 2 nostalgia, but want the features from later gens, then you might like Prism.  

I never got far in Adv Red before my hard drive crashed, but aside from some errors, it was interesting to see a recreation of the Pokemon Adventures manga.  Development is in question now though.

Aside from Zeta/omnicrom, I don't really know of any other fan games that you haven't listed here.

Can't really help with Pokemon too much as the only old hacks I liked were the ruby destiny, but those did not age well at all. Raptor is good for a laugh at how far fan games have come (that was one of the first fan games every made), but you really won't find too many of these around tbh.

Definitely play desolation

deso is excellent. the region is a refreshing change from the city/forest starting area of the main games, as well as the "grimy metropolis" starting areas in reborn/rejuv

I've recently finshed version 8 and I've heard of some story spilts where the choices you choose may change the outcome of the ending

I think there was one where you choose to set free that guy imprisoned in Angie's castle gym place dimension place..? I also believe there was another when you reach west gearen 

1. Choose whether or not to free Kreiss

2. Choose whether to give up the Magma Stone

3. Weird Diary

4. Whether to expose Flora or keep quiet (unless you go with Flora in the branching caves, where I think she makes you a member of Bladestar)

There's also minor dialogue changes depending on whether you do certain things. Like if you don't do help center requests that involve Karen, she won't appear in certain places like Amber's party. And if you do the April sidequest in Amethyst Cave, April/Krystal will recognize you on the train.

Huh, odd. The only reason I can think why that wouldn't have worked is if you saved multiple times after getting stuck. Maybe try going back a few saves?
