[Third Party Wins!] Mafia: What lurks below

Hi everyone! My nickname is Alaris and I’m going to host this Mafia: What Lies Below game. In this post you’ll find all the information you need to know to play.

~ What is Mafia and how is it played? ~  (credits to Dive)

Spoiler

Mafia is a social deduction game which requires analyzing, cooperation, and looking through lies. There are two main factions in a mafia game: the Uninformed Majority [Town], who have to find others of their kind while hunting for the mafia, and the Informed Minority [Mafia], who have a private chat and plan there on how they should trick the town and whom they should kill. There may also be Third Party or Independent roles, which have different agendas and win conditions.

At the beginning of the game, players receive a PM with their role and alignment.

There are two major phases in a Mafia game:

(1) The Day Phase – Typically lasting 48 hours, players use this opportunity to discuss about several things, which may include the outcome of the previous phases, behaviour of players, and flow of the game; the ultimate goal in the day phase is for the Town players to find the Mafia slowly while Mafia players have to blend in carefully. Before the day ends, players must vote for a player whom they want to be eliminated on grounds of suspicion and the player receiving the most votes will be eliminated.

(2) The Night Phase – Typically lasting 24 hours, the thread is considered “locked” at this point and players may not comment at all. Instead, players with night actions, special abilities related to their role, may use these to aid their faction. The Mafia also discusses in the private chat on whom to dispose of.

The game continues until one of the major factions attains their win condition or unless it is no longer possible.

~ Opening narrative ~

Spoiler

Once upon a time, there was a quaint and idyllic village, secluded from the rest of the modern world. An ancient legend said that the ruins below the town were home of a treasure capable of granting great power to the ones who found it, but it had been long forgotten. The townies had become used to their dull, monotonous lives, without the blessings of modern technology. However, this was all about to change: the legend had been leaked and caught the eye of two heartless companies, who sent their goons to the village in order to retrieve their prize. The Petroleum Seekers believed that the legend referred to a great petroleum reservoir that would give a tremendous boost to their fortunes. The Relic Hunters understood that what lied under the town was an immense ancient treasure from a more advanced civilisation, which would enable them to acquire endless power. And so, both parties went to prospect the surroundings of the village, only to discover that they were not alone. The two squads started a pitched battle to gain control upon the territory. The townies were caught amidst that war, and didn’t have any other option but to lynch a person every night, in hopes that they would soon eradicate those outsiders that had changed their lifestyle. Little did townies know that the treasure below their feet would grant them special skills to help them struggle to victory, or meet an ill-omened end...

~ Factions ~

Spoiler
  • Town: They are the Uninformed Majority. They want to save their village from the two rival gangs. They win when all the members of the Petroleum Seekers, the Relic Hunters AND the Third Party are dead.
  • Petroleum Seekers: They are one faction of the Informed Minority. Their aim is to kill all the members of the Relic Hunters, all the Town people and the Third Party.
  • Relic Hunters: They are the other faction of the Informed Minority. Their aim is to kill all the members of the Petroleum Seekers, all the Town people and the Third Party.
  • Third Party: Their goal is secret, and they are not aligned with any other faction.

~ Roles ~

Spoiler

In this game, only the names of the roles are revealed at the beginning. Check ‘Specific rules’ to see how information on the actions of the roles can be obtained.

Town Roles

  • Doctor – Also known as the alchemist, the Doctor can cure almost any wound. At night, they will choose a person to keep an eye on. If that person is fatally wounded during the night or the next day, the doctor will save their life. However, they cannot protect people from lynches or evil Potions... They cannot choose the same person twice in a row. Unlock: Successfully protect the Mayor! Secret ability: You will be able to protect two people every night. You still cannot protect yourself or the same person twice in a row.
  • Investigator – As one of the two only officers in many kilometres around, the Investigator will pour all their resources into discovering the criminals hidden among the townies. Each night, they follow a person to discover their alignment. Unlock: Investigate and discover both Lovers! Secret ability: You will discover the Roles instead of the Alignments.
  • Interrogator – As one of the two only officers in many kilometres around, the Interrogator always sees through lies. Each night, they choose a statement made during the day, and determine whether it’s true or false. Unlock: Discover three consecutive lies! Secret ability: You can send me two different statements from two different people.
  • Great Sorcerer – Known by their extensive knowledge on the regions’ history, the Great Sorcerer has deciphered the ancient inscriptions of the ruins that lay below the village. Drawing the power of their ancestors, the Great Sorcerer may cast, once in the game and during the day, a magical shield on everyone. From that point on, all the actions of that day and that night (lynch, guns and night actions) are nullified. Players will not be informed until next morning. Once-per-game actions that were to be done during that time will be wasted. Unlock: Make the Copycat fail! Secret ability: You will be able to cast another shield.
  • Psychologist – Very competent in reading others’ faces, the Psychologist always recognises an evil expression. Slightly insecure though, three possible options will come to their mind every night: one of them is Mafia (of any faction). Unlock: Discover Mr. Hyde’s real identity and tell it to me! (you have only one chance, via PM). Secret ability: Two of your options will now be Mafia.
  • Gravedigger – A peculiar character, the Gravedigger likes peeking inside other people’s tombs at night. Each night he will learn the role of a dead person. Unlock: Dig in the tomb of the Craftsman! Secret ability: You will receive a vest and a gun.
  • Spy – Although initially called as reinforcements for the Investigator, the Spy is a rather solitary character that prefers working on their own. Each night, they may send a message to a person. The content of that message is solely up to the Spy. Unlock: Be contacted by the Elite Spy! Secret ability: You will be able to send a public message every night.
  • Witch – A source of ancient knowledge, the Witch lives in a scruffy shag on the outskirts of the village. Before the night ends, she is informed of all the deaths that have occurred. The Witch brews two kinds of potions, Life Potions and Death Potions, each of which can be given away only once in the game, at night. The Life Potion will revive a person killed during that night; the Death Potion will kill a person of the choice of the Witch, surpassing most kinds of protection. Unlock: Give your Death Potion to the Doctor! Secret ability: You will obtain another Death Potion and another Life Potion.
  • Berserker – When fatally wounded or poisoned, the Berserker will kill anyone around before dying. That is, if the Berserker is lynched, every person that voted for them will be killed (unless protected). If the Berserker is killed during the night, every person that visited them will be killed (unless protected). If the Berserker is shot or given a Death Potion, they will kill the person that performed the action (unless protected). Unlock: Be killed by the Shapeshifter! Secret ability: Choose 3 random people to kill before you die.
  • Twins – They are almost identical siblings, although they rarely hang around together. They both can vote once (i.e., the vote of the person holding this role will count as 2; if Mayor, their vote counts as 4). When a kill is attempted on the Twins, only one of them will die, and the other will continue playing (i.e., the person holding this role has two lives, when they lose one, their vote will count only as one, 2 if Mayor). The Berserker can kill both of them at the same time. Unlock: Drink the Witch’s Death Potion when the two Twins are alive! (it will kill one of them). Secret ability: You become a Berserker.
  • Craftsman – The armoury of the village has been ruled by many generations of skilled gunsmiths. The Craftsman, who inherited that vast knowledge, devotes their time to manufacture guns and bulletproof vests. Each night, they may give either a gun or a bulletproof vest to someone (included themselves). Guns may be shot during the day; bulletproof vests only protect from gunshots and backfires of fake guns. Unlock: Abstain from making a vest/gun! Secret ability: You will know the names all the holders of guns, and if they are real or fake. You can repeat this action as many times as you want.
  • Copycat – A frustrated actor at heart, the Copycat likes imitating other’s actions. Once in the game and at night, the Copycat will choose a person, copying their role and abilities for the rest of the game. A  bit of a coward though, if they choose to copy the role of a Mafia or a certain Third Party, they will run away and their action will fail (being wasted). Unlock: Fail to copy a role because of the Magical Shield. Secret ability: Choose somebody to steal their role. You can still fail if you target Mafia or Third Parties.
  • Gossiper – A person with a lot of free time, the Gossiper likes to pry in others’ lives. Each night, they will hide near one of the houses where the Mafia are accommodated, to ‘accidentally overhear’ their conversations. The Gossiper will receive a copy of the conversation they eavesdropped on, with all the mentioned names and roles deleted throughout. Unlock: Abstain from eavesdropping for one night! Secret ability: Order of the Night Actions and description of all the roles will be publicly disclosed. Town will be notified.
  • Archaeologist – A seeker of the secrets that lie below the town, the Archaeologist can read the ancient inscriptions of the ruins. Doing so, and by opening one of the ruins’ chambers, every night they may discover the requisites needed to unlock someone’s hidden ability. They will appear as Mafia in all the investigations. And they may also play another, more decisive role... Unlock: Inquire on the Mayor’s base role! Secret ability: You will discover information on two people instead of one per night.
  • Vanilla Townie

Mafia Roles

  • Elite Spy [Relic Hunter] – Loather of direct human contact, the Elite Spy starts on its own, outside the Mafia’s group chat and without knowing anyone’s alignment. A highly skilled mercenary, their expertise in collecting information is renowned among spies from all over the world, as they feature two night actions. First, they may send an anonymous message to someone. Second, they may investigate the role of a player. The Elite Spy has not the ability to kill unless they’re the last scum of their faction. Unlock: Be contacted by the Spy! Secret ability: If you wish, the messages you send will now announce a person of your choice as the one who sent it.
  • Corrupted Lawyer [Petroleum Seeker] – Being the first of their promotion, their eloquent discourse was unparalleled. The Corrupted Lawyer could convince anyone but, ironically enough, they were dragged into this ordeal by someone with more... authority. Once in the game, the Corrupted Lawyer may avoid a lynch. Unlock: Prevent the Mayor from being lynched! Secret ability: You can forge one day’s voting. This means that once in the game, you may choose a voting (Lynch or Disclose) and decide whatever result you like.
  • Restrainer [Petroleum Seeker] – An incorrigible sadist, the Restrainer visits people and tortures them just for fun. Each night, they may visit a player, gagging them. The player will be immobilised during that night and the next day, meaning that they will not be able to perform their night action (including lynch vote), or speak, vote or shoot during the next day (although they will send me their next lynch vote via PM). The affected player will receive a fake warning by me. Unlock: Restrain the Berserker! Secret ability: The Berserker will lose their role and become a Vanilla Townie.
  • Mr. Hyde [Relic Hunter] – Although Mr. Hyde possesses two radically different personalities, the evil one has been steadily taking over their body. They would do anything for money, and ancient treasures do pretty much the trick. Each personality may cast their vote (i.e., the vote of the player holding this role counts as 2; if Mayor, their vote counts as 3). They will show their best face when investigated, appearing as a Doctor, Town-aligned in almost all methods of investigation, even after death. Only the Psychologist may recognise the evil smirk on their face... Unlock: Be successfully protected by the Doctor! Secret ability: You kill the Doctor.
  • Shapeshifter [Relic Hunter] – As the boss of the Relic Hunters, the Shapeshifter is determined to find the treasure, no matter the cost. Merciless by nature, they will destroy the village if by doing so they can find the relics. The Shapeshifter has the ability to temporarily morph their appearance to match any other villager. Using it, when they shot someone (they start with one gun), they may select who appears as the shooter. Additionally, they possess three fake guns. Disguised as the Craftsman, the Shapeshifter may give away a fake gun per night if they have not shot during the previous day. Unlock: Be contacted by the Elite Spy! Secret ability: Every night, you may decide to make everyone appear to belong to their opposite alignment in all the investigations.
  • Recruiter [Petroleum Seeker] – The boss of the Petroleum Seekers enjoys a power position in a very important company, allowing them to exert tremendous influence upon others. Once in the game, the Recruiter may convert a Townie or a Relic Hunter into Petroleum Seeker. That person will preserve the abilities of their original role. This will count as the Petroleum Seekers’ action for the night, and the town will be notified that there’s an extra scum around. Unlock: Recruit the Mayor! (if they are not already aligned with you). Secret ability: If the Mayor dies, the role won’t be passed to anyone else. You will decide who wins in case of tie (no-one will know). If you also die, no-one will be lynched in case of a tie from that point on.
  • Perfectionist [Relic Hunter] – Number 1 bothers this character, who will go to unimaginable lengths to remove anything related to it. Each night, the Perfectionist will think of any word. If that word is said by only 1 player apart from them, the Perfectionist will kill that player. If 2 or more people say that word, the Perfectionist will kill themselves. If there is only 1 member of the other Mafia faction remaining, the Perfectionist will know their role. Unlock: Suggest a word and make everybody say it. Secret ability: The first to say your word will die, but it must have four or more syllables. Nothing will happen to you if someone else says that word.

Third Party

  • Mayor The Mayor will be elected in Day 1 (see 'Specific Rules' below), and the person holding the title will be publicly announced. The Mayor preserves their original alignment, goal and role, which may be Town, Mafia or Third Party. However, they will appear as Third Party in most means of investigation. Their vote counts as 2 and, if there is a tie in a lynch, the Mayor decides who to kill and who to save. If the Mayor dies, they will arbitrarily pass the Mayor role to somebody else. If the Mayor cannot decide who to save (because they are affected by some other role), no-one will be lynched in the case of a tie.
  • Lovers – These players madly fell in love with each other at the beginning of the game (regardless of their alignment, preserving their initial role). Being as possessive and jealous as they come, the objective of the Lovers is to be the last two people alive (killing all the people from Town, Mafia and other Third Party). If one of the two dies, the other will kill themselves in grief.
  • Ancient Being – Sealed in the deepest halls oF the ru1n5, tH3r... ...13p4THy +H3y w1ll... ..nD 4m0Ng inn0c... ...SW1+cH tAr83t... [Corrupted file]. Unlock: ...ARCHa30L0... ...f1^3 tiM... [Corrupted information]. Secret Ability: ...K1LL Tw0... ...PeR n1gHt... iF hUm4n f0rm... ...0rM4l KILL... ...bl0cK H4lf. 1f 0r181n... ...yb0dy lyN... [Corrupted information].

~ Specific rules and other interesting info ~

Spoiler
  • Should there be more players than roles planned, the remaining people will get a Vanilla Townie role, with no particular ability. If there are less players than roles available, necessary adjustments will be made.
  • In this game, there are three types of votes. Mayor Election Votes, Role Disclosing Votes and Lynch Votes. All kinds of votes must be cast in bold. Please, try to stick to the format set for each vote, if not I'm gonna go crazy!
  • The game will start in Day 1, the election day. No lynch will occur, only the Mayor Election. Players must use the following format to choose their Mayor: [Vote] Player or [Unvote] Player. Abstaining is allowed. The winner will become the Mayor, preserving their initial role (if there's a tie, no-one will become Mayor).
  • Role Disclosing Votes may be cast every day along with Mayor Election Votes or Lynch Votes. They will follow the format: [Disclose] Role name or [Cancel] Role name. Information of actions and particularities of the most voted role will be revealed in the next morning. In the case of Mafia roles, the specific faction they belong to will not be revealed. Once the basic information has been exposed, the role may be voted again (on a different day) to uncover the conditions to unlock the secret ability for each role. Abstaining is allowed. If there's a tie, no info will be disclosed.
  • Lynch Votes may be cast from Day 2 on. They will follow the format: [Eliminate] Player or [Unvote] Player. Abstaining is NOT allowed. The person with most Lynch Votes will be killed at the beginning of the night (unless saved by any other role capable of doing so).
  • Players must cast a Lynch Vote and should post at least 2 messages each day. Ignoring any of the two rules once or twice will result in a warning. Ignoring them again will result in modkill or substitution of the player.
  • The Lynch will happen in the night. Therefore, some night actions may still affect it.
  • Anyone can abstain from doing their night action.
  • There are TWO factions of Mafia, the Petroleum Seekers and the Relic Hunters. A secret rule (unknown by the Mafia themselves) based on what they do or say during the day will decide which of the two gets the factional kill action each night. This hidden rule can be revealed by means of Role Disclosing Votes in the format [Disclose] Mafia.
  • The scum who performs the kill will be chosen among the alive Mafia by their peers. Aside from the kill action, they will still be able to perform their regular night action, if any. The Mafia chats will only be active AT NIGHT. Mafia cannot start the discussion until I say ‘Night begins, beware of the Gossiper’ in the Mafia chat. Mafia must stop discussing when I say ‘Day begins’ in the Mafia chat.
  • When dead, only the alignment of the player will appear (i.e., Town, Petroleum Seeker, Relic Hunter or Third Party).
  • All the roles possess a special, hidden ability that may be unlocked if they perform a certain, secret action (usually it’s to target a specific role with their ability, or being targeted by a specific role). They will be informed if they happen to fulfil that condition and, in some cases, it will be publicly disclosed.
  • There are other events that are story-dependent, and may be unlocked if you all perform a certain combination of actions (which I hope you do ;) ).

Hopefully I'm instantly murdered XD

Let's say that assuming there are 23 players, there's a 0.0000000000000000000000000000001464 probability you're all dead by the end of Night 2. :) I hope it doesn't happen though.
