Why would I slap twice when I could simply slap back 2x+ as hard? Or choke slam a fool against a wall and demand answers?

 

1x power is an equalizer or restitution of sorts, and any power greater than that is the punitive measure for having violated the social contract, making the loss greater than the gain and reducing the attractiveness of the violation to the perpetrator and any potential would-be perpetrators.

This is the most interesting answer I've seen yet.

 

My answer would depend on many factors (how strong was the slap? does the person show signs of wanting to fight? do I know them? are there witnesses?) but the other person is already making a fool of themselves for no reason. I don't see the need to do anything other than laugh at them and tell them to begone. Starting a fight would achieve little more than risking more negative consequences for me.

 

Realistically, younger me or in-a-bad-mood me would probably slap or punch back though.

just what an honorless person would say. It's whatever. One has the moral high ground either way. One approach gets more satisfaction out of the exchange. It also depends on how those around you and the person who slapped you perceive your choice of (in)action.
