Welcome to Fire Emblem: Ashes! Here I will be explaining the character creation rules, details about the world, and everything you need to know! This thread obviously also doubles as an OOC so when character selection is done it will serve for all you nerds to discuss strats.

So let's get down to business! There are some rules changes made to the game that we will be using. These rule changes are found here:

 

Added personal skills skills: - Ignis: Free; (SKL+LCK)% chance of adding half STR to magical attacks or half MAG to physical attacks each hit.

--Sol: %SKL+LCK chance of recovering HP equal to half damage done in an attack or counterattack.

Cost Character Skills:

--Luna: %SKL+LCK chance of ignoring half the respective defensive stat when making an attack or counterattack.

--Meteor: SPD/2% chance to deliver 3 more consecutive attacks. These attacks will not roll for Critical, will not deal Effective damage, nor they will be able to fire up other skills like Adept, and does not stack with Brave weapons.

-Sleeping units always wake up when hit. Sleep now forces dismounting on mounted units.
-People who use staves/performances autoequip a weapon if they have it in their inventory and can use it.
-Supports and Terrain grant Damage Reduction instead of Defence.
-Units equipped with staves can now counter-attack at 1 range using their strength stat. Staff Might is not considered and they cannot declare an attack with a staff.
-Hit and Crit rolls are separated.
-Critical % chance hard-capped at 85.
-Performers can not move again when performed on by another performer.
-CON no longer used to determine amount of inventory slots. Every unit have 5 inventory slots, unless special rules are applied ('Bag of Holding' of Rogue class, for example).
-You die when the 'KO' counter goes to 0. Death is permament.

-All Staff usage gives 5 EXP just like performances. 

Archer ability is modified to the following: Called Shot: instead of attacking, the Archer can choose to take an overwatch stance, automatically attacking the first enemy to get in range the next enemy phase. Works with ballistas. Combat resolves normally.

The Knight ability Hold the Line is modified to the following: Hold the Line: Passive. Whenever an enemy enters a space adjacent to the unit with this ability, their remaining MOV is reduced to 0.

Knights may choose from Sword, Axe, and Lance only.

Myrmidons do not get En Passant.

Scavengers do not get Power of the Underdog.

Spies choose either swords or bows at C specific D general.

The Thief special Overdeveloped Sense of Self Preservation is changed to allowing the Thief to spend any remaining movement they have after using their Steal special or using the lockpick action.

Scavengers, Spies and Thieves all get the Vision special. Vision also adds 50% to their chance to discover hidden items. Vision also alerts the character to traps.

Hidden Items are items placed on a map, but not visible to players. If a unit enters a space where a hidden item can be found, they have a LUK% chance to discover it.

Troubadours get D rank specialization, rather than C.

Assassin weapon rank is S for specialization, B for general for whatever the character had as a spy.

Bishops do not gain Sanctuary.

Bounty Hunters can steal as many weapons per battle as their Level/5, minimum 1.

Hot Start is removed from Duke Knights.

Momentum is removed from Great Knights.

Aura of Vitality restores 5 HP instead of 1/5 max HP.

Medicine Man now has a cost of 100 gold for making vulneraries.

Sentinels do not gain Retaliation.

Swordmasters do not gain Faster than the Eye.

Wyvern Knights no longer gain the Armored Class Skill.

Critical Eye is removed from Wyvern Hunter, Mountain Warrior, and Inquisitor.

Supply Line Healing only goes out 3 spaces and only heals 5 points.

Undead don't take bonus damage from fire

Wind doesn't deal effective damage to wyverns but it does to other flying units

Thunder deals effective damage on Wyverns and other dragons

Effective damage is 3x weapon might not 2x. Crossbows are 2x weapon might.

Pegasus Rider:
‘Cloud Walking’ no longer grants bonus MOV, but allows this character to ignore all effects of weather.
"Magic Sink" is removed, replaced with "Feathered Guard": -1 damage taken when fighting an enemy wielding a sword or a tome.

Soldier:
‘Spear-Wall’ is removed. Instead they gain ‘Anti-Cavalry’: This character gains +2 Damage and +2 Defence against mounted units (including Wyverns and Pegasuses).

Troubador:
"Minor Arcana" now reads as: When the character with this skill uses a healing staff, the recipient receives +2 resistance for the remainder of the turn.

Saint:
‘Transfer Might’ can be used on multiple allies, so long as the Saint’s Strength does not go under 0 and no allied unit gains more than 8 points of Strength. The transferred strength can be recovered at any time, as well as automatically when that ally is reduced to 0 HP.

Master Spy:
‘Traps’ have five uses, not three.

Level ups only happen in the next player. So if they happen in one player phase they will take effect during the next one.

At character creation, if a player chooses to put two points into HP, they will receive three instead.

Awareness is Cost.

Disarm is Cost instead of Free.

Daunt reduces the hit, evade, and critical of enemies in range by 5, not 10.

Priest's self healing heals for half of mag and only on the player phase

Forrest and supports give damage reduction instead of defense.

Next here is the character sheet.

Your character is a freedom fighter, currently living in a Western port town called Laguna Port. For one reason or another they have joined up with the Misguided Children a group who opposes the king.

Along with this please write a backstory along with your character. It can be as short as a paragraph if you aren't feeling inspired, or you can re-write Tolkien's whole fantasy series from scratch. Up to you, but whatever you write should give a feeling of what your character has been through, what their goals are, who they are, and why the hell they are risking their lives to fight in a freedom fighting army.

The continent of Ignis, a large continent surrounded by islands. It's varied weather makes it a difficult place to live in, but still it strives. The Kingdom of Dragao, a huge kingdom that covers most of the continent rules the Western Peninsula and most of the main land. There is the Kingdom of Caelum, a wealthy and prosperous trading kingdom that is protected by vast deserts. And the newest country, the Yukihana Empire, an icy territory that used to inhabit several smaller countries, now all conquered and unified under the Yukihana Clan.

These three nations disagree on many things, from politics to religion. But they all agree on the creation of the world. A Goddess, power kind and beautiful saw that there was nothing. So she created the stars. From their fiery power, she smithed together a very hot rock that came to be the world. This world was very very hot, and so she populated it with dragons and wyverns; creatures that could withstand the heat. They prospered and ruled the lands. Eventually though the earth cooled down. So she made animals; horses, wolves, lions, ox, birds, fish, pegasi; all of the animals humans know today. And as a final touch, she added man.

Man felt an outcast from the start. They walked on two legs, when other animals didn't. They felt themselves higher than animals, so they used their intelligence to domesticate the animals. They tamed the horses and pegasi as mounts, the wolves as companions, and even the wyverns to be used in their squabbles. But never the dragons. Instead, they feared the dragons. Their fear lead to mistrust, and eventually war. The humans attacked the dragons with all their force. Even if these powerful monsters could take down a single human, a single dragon would never be able to stand up against the might of the human armies. Seeing that the dragons weren't fit for this world, the Goddess exiled them to the hells of the earth. Before she left the earth, she found the human that lead these armies. She gave him a shield that gleamed with her power, that burned with the same might of the dragons. This shield was named the Fire Emblem and it's wielder was named the Dragon King. Being a human with the strength of dragons he came to unite all of the continent of Ignis under one banner. This is the story of the Kingdom of Dragao.

It's been a thousand years since the rule of the Dragon King. The kingdom of Caelum has split from the main kingdom and the northern lands have lost the law of the king for years past. And unrest splits the Kingdom of Dragao apart.

The 14th King of Dragao, Brandon Dragao was a wise and just ruler for 20 years. However, on the month of Harvest he attacked and murdered his own wife. He wasn't given a trial, he himself confessed to his crime in front of the people. He was stripped of his title as king, and sent to prison for the rest of his life. His younger brother, King Roswell Dragao inherited the throne. Previously he had been a military leader, leading over the calvary of the nation.

Upon becoming king, he took the high priestess of the Fiery Goddess as his wife. He announced that he was a Godly man, and that the crown and church would rule the kingdom fairly. Four years into his rule the king declared war on the neighboring Kingdom of Caelum. He declared the country an ungodly nation, and that the Goddess wanted it burned. The people were unsettled as men and women of fighting age were drafted into the army for an uncalled for war.

Over the course of the next seven years two rebellions were started and failed. The Gold Dragon rebellion was the first, and lead to strict taxes on the rebellious nobles who started it. The Two Days rebellion came after, and was quelled in just two days.

It is the year 1020, the month of Last Bloom. The people have lost hope, and poverty is increasing. But there is yet hope; a group of freedom fighters. A small militia, hiding out in the slums of the ports of Laguna Bay. Calling themselves the Misguided Children they strike at the kingdom and slowly pave the way to a brighter future.

You are part of these freedom fighters.

Timeline to help with placements:

 

990 - King Brandon the III comes to power.

1010- King Brandon confessed to murdering the Queen and renounces all claim to the throne. Until his daughter Saffron comes of age, King Roswell takes over.

1014- King Roswell declares war on Caelum. The Gold Dragon Rebellion begins, lead by the houses Nohr, Laguna and Flamewaker

1015- General Garbhan with the aid of the houses of Longgarden and Cloudbreaker put an end to the rebelling houses. Heavy taxation was put on the rebelling houses to ensure their loyalty.

1016- The Two Day Rebellion happens, started mostly by farmers and towns people.

1020- Current year, the Princess Saffron escapes the castle and has a chance meeting with a rebel group called the Misguided Children.

This timeline will be updated as events happen as well as they are discovered from the past. All of these events would be common knowledge to your characters.

On the topic of last names:

 

In Dragao, the common people do not have a need for last names. However, trader, noble and royal houses need these names to separate themselves from the masses. Often names derive from important accomplishments their house has done (Giantslayer, Lifesaver, Swordsmith etc or the land they rule (Dragao, Nohr, Laguna).

Followers of the Fiery Goddess rid themselves of any family names or titles they held when they devote themselves to the Goddess. Instead, they take titles that represent their personality. Often these names are chosen by an already existing member of the church, but it can be chosen by the individual. Examples: Naliah the Devout, Feri the Caretaker, Lux the Foreseer.

Bandits, pirates and thieves often make a mockery of other naming conventions and take titles of their own. These names are always made to intimidate their enemies, and are often inherited to their children. Examples: Samwell "Sea Bane", Lucas "Swift Axe", Mari "The Cannibal"

Marriage in Dragao is a sacred thing, and children born outside of it are considered bastards. The bastards of noble families are often thrown out and treated like common people but when they are raised by their parents and recognized as an heir, they instead take a different family name. Bastards either take the name Pyre, Ash or Burn. They can inherit lands if their parent has no other heirs, but they will never rid themselves of the bastard name until they marry a noble and take that noble's name.

The Kingdom of Caelum is a much simpler place in terms of last names. Marriage being a polygamous affair for them, they simply introduce themselves with their first name followed by "Son/Daughter of" and then their favored parent. They will always put any important titles at the start of their name. Examples: Sol'Fael Son of Sol'Runo

In the wild lands of Yukihana, they do not believe in family bloodlines. They will simply introduce themselves by their first name, followed by the clan they follow. Example: Takehiko of the Yukihana Clan.

NEW Religion:

 

As stated before, the main belief in all of Ignis is that there is a single Goddess. However, each country has their own changes made to the legend of the Fiery Goddess.

The beliefs of Dragao are the most rooted to the original legend. There is one Goddess, who gifted the first king of Dragao with the Fire Emblem, and with it's power he conquered the continent. This church has as it's spiritual leader the High Priest. Every time a High Priest dies a new one is chosen. The most sacred thing to the Goddess is marriage; divorce is not an option. Anything that deviates from the marriage between a man and a woman is considered sinful and negative in the eyes of the Goddess.

Caelum on the other hand split from the main religion when it was founded. They worship the same Fiery Goddess, but gave her the same name as the continent Ignis. They worship her, and do not respect the High Priest. They believe that the only one who ever talked with the goddess was the original founder of the kingdom, the Flame Prophet. They are also lax with marriage; it can be between a man and a man, a woman and a woman, or even several people. Sometimes, people pray to the Flame Prophet instead of the Goddess when problems aren't big enough to bother the Goddess herself.

Yukihana for the most part has the same beliefs as Dragao. Yukihana being a huge combination of different cultures and clans doesn't have a single religion however. Everyone respects the Fiery Goddess, but some clans worship the dragons of old or the spirits of magic. Marriage isn't as sacred as it is in Dragao, since it's very easy to die in Yukihana's cold climates. The Yukihana Clan also added another part to the legend; the Fiery Goddess brings all of the good to the world but in contrast the Ice Dragon brings pain and despair. They believe that the world is balance in between these two forces.

Geography and politics!

Dragao:

Dragao's capital is named Dragon's Nest and is where the king's seat resides. The lands of Dragao are protected by the main army but also with support from the Cloudbreaker and Longgarden families.

Long Garden is the closest city to the capital, and oversees huge farmlands. Run by house Longgarden; a house that sided with the crown. Longgarden are the richest of all families, often said to rival the crown in wealth. They are numerous, proud and hold a large army.

Cloudhome is in a strategic spot being the closest to the border. Oversees large vineyards. Run by house Cloudbreaker; a house that side with the crown. Their partnership with Longgarden has earned them a lot of wealth. Many strange and creepy rumors surround the house's head.

Hearthlight holds Dragao's best college of magic, and holds a high number of crafting clans. Run by house Flamewaker; Hesitant at first, but eventually sided with the rebels. Flamewaker are known for their knowledge and craftsmanship. Often made fun of for their undeceive nature.

Rune City is the city closest to the Rune Mountains; where almost all of Dragao's minerals are dug. Run by house Nohr; a house that rebelled against the crown. Their partnership with Flamewaker has made Nohr a fairly rich house. They are also known for raising pegasus as the species is native to their mountains. Nohr are known to be stubborn as the rocks they mine.

Laguna Bay, the second largest city in Dragao but the poorest house and with the largest crime rate. Run by house Laguna; a house that rebelled against the crown. The Laguna Bay area is made mostly of marshes so the people make do with fishing and whaling

Caelum:

Natarjah: The capital of Caelum, it a magical city built in the middle of the desert right between two rivers and an oasis. It is the home of the senate, and the three rulers who rest in the Palace of the Prophet.

Domalat: the trading capital of Caelum, here land many ships from other continents. The city is almost completely self run and the people are richer than the nobles of Dragao.

Yukihana:

Palace of Ice: The first landmark ordered to be built by Emperor Takehiko of the Yukihana clan; The Palace of Ice is the seat of the Emperor and a symbol of power and his conquest over the other clans.

Summary of Events:

 

 


On the 4th day of Last Boom in the year 1020 a small group of eight, known as the Misguided Children attacked a prison, releasing men and women who would have been sent out to war otherwise. This group was part of a larger group lead by Samwell the Sea Bane. In the prison they saved a man named Hayden, who begged them to rescue his daughter who was already sent off to war. By sheer luck, the same group came across Princess Saffron Dragao, her cousin Keagan and their mentor Feri. The group rescued them and defeated their pursuer, Commander Maris Longgarden one of General Garbhan's personal councilors, the last blow was Terrin's. On the 24th of Last Bloom, now safe and sound Saffron announced her intentions of taking back the throne. With the backing of Samwell and the rest of the group, the Princess set out to Caelum with her trusted cousin and mentor, the eight saviors and a young thief named Dash in hopes of making much needed allies. After a few weeks travel they met with the pyromaniac mage Serene, who proved her worth against a group of undead monstrosities. Along with Serene they rescued two merchants by the name of Anna Marie and Ian, and a soldier named Radburn. In a near by church they discovered a strange crystal with religious markings and imbued with the light of the Goddess, which seemed to be the source of the undead. After a few more weeks of travel, they were stopped at a checkpoint in the territory of house Nohr, and fought their way through rescuing a thief named Cherry in the meanwhile. Taking comfort in Hearthlight, the group tried to rest but discovered that King Roswell was in the city as well. There, the King forced the city of Hearthlight to choose between following his orders, or the death of their Lord, Harmon Flamewaker.

The toughest part for me is going to be deciding on a class to be lol and the month to be born in because apparently that's connected to affinity and lore?

Also Pyon, can the backstory be about anything we want it to be as long as its connected to the lore you put even if it might not have happened because it's not listed in the lore such as my character's father being part of Brandon's army and advisors and so on? Also, can we have our character be part of a noble family or do we (all the members here) all have to be common people origins?

No your character can be from noble families. He can be from one of Brandon's army. If there is anything I'm uncomfortable with I'll answer in the pm.

Also you can just random the month if you want... It's related to something else entirely that's kind of insignificant anyways.

Oh I will do my application for this soon but is there a limit to how many units will be accepted in total and a deadline for this?

Is it a first come-first serve kind of thing or a everybody who wants to join as long as they do the sheet can?

There will be limited slots of 6-8 people. No deadline as of yet, and I will be choosing characters based on party composition/quality of the characters. Later down the road I will be accepting more units as I feel comfortable with dming for more characters as well as the story progresses.

As I said before: characters are chosen by quality. It's NOT first come first serve. The "Reserving a spot" doesn't actually mean anything. Make a good character, you get in. All of these characters aren't accepted either they are just the submitted ones from which I will choose later.

Also thanks for pointing out my inbox was full, it's taken care of now.

Hmmm, well, I hadn't really paid attention to this one, but it's caught my interest with all the activity... perhaps I might whip something together after I get through reading the rule booklet and all the lore
